  • High frequency AC (HFAC) power distribution systems delivering power through a high frequency AC link with sinusoidal voltage have the advantages of simple structure and high efficiency. In a multiple module system, where multiple resonant inverters are paralleled to the high frequency AC bus through connection inductors, it is necessary for the output voltage phase angles of the inverters be controlled so that the circulating current among the inverters be minimized. However, the phase angle of the resonant inverters output voltage can not be controlled with conventional phase shift modulation or pulse width modulation. The phase angle is a function of both the phase of the gating signals and the impedance of the resonant tank. In this paper, we proposed a pulse phase modulation (PPM) concept for the resonant inverters, so that the phase angle of the output voltage can be regulated. The PPM can be used to minimize the circulating current between the resonant inverters. The mechanisms of the phase angle control and the PPM were explained. The small signal model of a PPM controlled half-bridge resonant inverter was analyzed. The concept was verified in a half bridge resonant inverter with a series-parallel resonant tank. An HFAC power distribution system with two resonant inverters connected in parallel to a 500kHz, 28V AC bus was presented to demonstrate the applicability of the concept in a high frequency power distribution system.

  • A Signal Receiving system to collect and analyze RF signals should be verified under simulated RF signal environment prior to verification on operation in fields and tested by using simulated RF signals in order to estimate its electrical performance. Generally, typical Signal Receiving system can measure, analyze frequency, pulse modulation, scan modulation, phase modulation on pulse, frequency modulation on pulse etc on RF signals. These RF signals should be generated from simulated RF sources in laboratory. Also the simultaneous RF signals should be simulated on laboratory. This paper describes the results of studying effective simulated RF signal source generation, the methods of the precise RF test signal generation in consideration of operational scenario.

  • In this paper, we analysis to consider the performance of PSPM (Phase Shift Pulse-position Modulation), the one of the low power communication technique, in near-field underwater sound channel by sea trial. PSPM is a QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation combined with PPM(Pulse Position Modulation) for low power communication in WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network). It is known that the bandwidth efficiency of PSPM is lower than conventional PSK but the power efficiency increases. In this paper, we will analyze the BER performance of PSPM using data acquired from the sea trials. The BER of QPSK was $6.04{\times}10^{-2}$, PSPM was $3.5{\times}10^{-1}$. Also, PSNR of QPSK was 9.37 dB and in case of PSPM was 9.11 dB.

  • In this paper, the effect of pulse width modulation methods on thermal loadings and power losses of single-phase five-level NPC inverters for photovoltaic systems are analyzed. The pulse width modulation methods affect the power losses of the NPC inverters and thus lead to different thermal loadings of NPC inverters. To identify the reliability-critical power device with respect to thermal stress, the thermal loadings of I- and T-type NPC inverters are analyzed by applying the unipolar pulse modulation method. Then, the effect of the discontinuous pulse width modulation method on power losses and thermal loadings of power devices of I- and T-type NPC inverters are analyzed. Finally, the operation of NPC inverters applying the discontinuous pulse modulation method is confirmed by experiments. The results show that the discontinuous pulse modulation method is able to improve the reliability of NPC inverters by reducing thermal loadings of reliability-critical power devices and it is more effective for T-type NPC inverters than I-type NPC inverters.

  • We generate short optical pulses of ∼ 6 picoseconds at 10 GHz by chirped pulse compression based on phase modulation and chirp compensation. In the suggested method, sinusoidally driven intensity and phase modulators generate chirped pulses which are subsequently suppressed by chirp compensation using a single mode fiber.

  • This paper presents an improved phase-shift pulse-width modulation (PWM) full-bridge converter using a blocking capacitor. As the proposed converter reduces the circulation energy by inserting only one series blocking capacitor at the primary side of the conventional phase-shift PWM full-bridge converter structure, it improves the operation characteristics of the conventional converter. In this paper, first, the operation of conventional phase-shift PWM full-bridge converter is roughly reviewed, and then the operational principle of the proposed converter is classified and explained by each mode. After that, a prototype design example based on the operational principle is shown. Then, the improved operation characteristics of the proposed converter are actually verified through the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we investigated the degree of compensation for distorted optical pulse of wavelength division multiplexed(WDM) channel with initial frequency chirp generated in optical transmitter. The WDM channel signal distortion is due to chromatic dispersion, self phase modulation(SPM) and cross phase modulation(XPM) in fiber. The considered system is 3 ${\times}$ 40 Gbps intensity modulation direct detection(IM/DD) WDM transmission systems, which adopted mid-span spectral inversion(MSSI) as compensation method. We confirmed that the effect of initial frequency chirp on compensation for signal distortion due to a SPM is gradually decreased as a dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes gradually small. But, in the aspect of a compensation for signal distortion due to both SPM and XPM, the effect of initial frequency chirp on compensation is gradually decreased as a dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes gradually large.

  • In this paper, we propose a single-phase inverter system using new modulation method. The proposed system is composed of a buck-boost converter and an inverter and controlled by PWAM scheme. PWAM method is a new modulation method which is the incorporation of PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) and PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation) methods. The DC voltage which is the input voltage of buck-boost converter is converted into a variable DC voltage by buck-boost converter. Also, the variable DC voltage which is the output voltage of buck-boost converter is converted into a sinusoidal AC voltage by inverter. The input voltage of inverter is processed by PWM switching in PWM section and bypassed in PAM section. By using PWAM method, switching action is not existed in PAM section and thus the times of switching is reduced. As a result, the switching loss can be reduced.

  • A new discrete-amplitude pulse width modulation (DAPWM) scheme for a high-efficiency linear power amplifier is proposed. A radio frequency (RF) input signal is divided into an envelope and a phase modulated carrier. The low-frequency envelope is modulated so that it can be represented by a pulse whose area is proportional to its amplitude. The modulated pulse has at least two different pulse amplitude levels in order that the duty ratios of the pulse are kept large for small input. Then, an RF pulse train is generated by mixing the modulated envelope with the phase modulated carrier. The RF pulse train is amplified by a switching-mode power amplifier, and the original RF input signal is restored by a band pass filter. Because duty ratios of the RF pulse train are kept large in spite of a small input envelope, the DAPWM technique can reduce loss from harmonic components. Furthermore, it reduces filtering efforts required to suppress harmonic components. Simulations show that the overall efficiency of the pulsed power amplifier with DAPWM is about 60.3% for a mobile WiMax signal. This is approximately a 73% increase compared to a pulsed power amplifier with PWM.
