Lung homotransplantation was performed in 15 pairs of dog. Methotrexate and R.E.S. blocking were used to prolong the survival time. Details of handling the transplant, operative technique and management of the recipient were discussed and following results were obtained: 1]. 7 dogs out of 15 dogs of homotransplantation of lung were survived beyond 3 days. In the group of dogs treated with methotrexate, the average survival was 8.5 days, and in the group of dogs treated with R.E.S. blocking, the average survial was 9.7 days with longest survival of 17 days. 2]. The causes of immediate postoperative death in homotransplantation of dogs were lung edema and disruption of bronchial anastomosis. 3]. The main causes of death in successful homotransplantation dogs which were survived beyond 3 days were infection of lung parenchyma and bronchial necrosis rather than the occurence of graft rejection. 4]. Graft rejection was not revealed even after 7 days of operation in the group treated with methotrexate as well as in the group treated with R. E.S. blocking. This finding made it suggest that the R. E.S. blocking may be effective to control the rejection reaction. 5]. Even though the pulmonary function of transplanted lung was revealed the evidence of severe impairment immediate after operation by bronchospirometry, it was increased gradually and 10 days after operation the minute ventilation and oxygen uptake were decreased 8%, 13% respectively less than pre-operative one.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is among the most prevalent and important infectious agents associated with porcine respiratory disease complex. The airway dagame caused by M. hyopneumoniae adversely affect the pulmonary host defense mechanisms and may lead to secondary bacterial infections. Culture is considered to be the "gold standard" for diagnosis but this is a very slow and labor-intensive procedure. Isolation of M. hyopneumoniae is complicated by its fastidious nature and extremely slow growth. Thirty days of incubation may be necessary to detect the organism in primary broth cultures. The purposes of the study were (ⅰ) to develop nested PCR for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae DNA in the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung tissues from experimentally and naturally infected pigs and (ⅱ) to compare the utility of nested PCR with in situ hybridization. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for cardiac surgery induces the production and release of numerous chemotactic substances and cytokines, ensuing systemic inflammatory response that causes postoperative major organ dysfunctions. We performed a randomized, prospective study to investigate clinical effects of preoperative treated-methylprednisolone for preventing inflammation in pediatric cardiac surgery with CPB. Thirty pediatric patients scheduled for elective cardiac surgery were randomized to either control(n=15) or steroid group (n=15, 10 mg/kg of methylprednisolone). Arterial blood samples were taken before and after the operations for measuring total leukocyte (T-WBC) and differential counts, platelet counts, interleukin-6 (IL-6), myeloperoxidase (MPO), neuron specific enolase (NSE), troponin-I (TNI), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine levels. Postoperative parameters such as pulmonary index (PI, $PaO_2/FiO_2$), 24 hrs and total bleeding volumes, mechanical ventilating (MVP) and intensive care unit (ICU)-staying periods, and hospitalization were assessed. T-WBC, neutrophil fraction, IL-6, MPO, NSE, TNI, AST and creatinine levels, bleeding volumes, PI, and MVP at the postoperative periods were lower or shorter in steroid group than in control group (P<0.05). These findings indicated that preoperative administration of methylprednisolone attenuated CPB-induced inflammatory reactions, contributing to postoperative recovery of patients underwent cardiac surgery.
A 61-year-old female patient was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy with severe left ventricle dysfunction. Two days after admission, continuous renal replacement therapy was performed due to oliguria and lactic acidosis. On the fifth day, an intra-aortic balloon pump was inserted due to low cardiac output syndrome. Beginning 4 days after admission, she was supported for 15 days thereafter with an extracorporeal left ventricular assist device (LVAD) because of heart failure with multi-organ failure. A heart transplant was performed while the patient was stabilized with the LVAD. She developed several complications after the surgery, such as cytomegalovirus pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, wound dehiscence, and H1N1 infection. On postoperative day 19, she was discharged from the hospital with close follow-up and treatment for infection. She received follow-up care for 10 months without any immune rejection reaction.

The objective of this study was to develop digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled in situ hybridization (ISH) test for diagnosis of Aujeszky's Disease(AD) in infected organs. Specific DNA with well conserved gene sequences encoding gp50 antigen in AD virus (ADV) was obtained by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. A pair of oligonucleotide primers used in PCR allowed amplification of a 217 bp sequence from the gp50 ADV gene. The DNA was then labeled with DIG by primer labeling method for use as probe in ISH test to detect ADV nucleic acids in various tissue. Positive hybridization was demonstrated by dark pigmentation in nuclei and cytoplasm of ADV infected cells particularly in brain tonsillar crypt epithelium and pulmonary alveolar cells. This result suggests that ISH is a valuable sensitive and rapid diagnostic test for AD.

We present a case of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) in a 25-year-old male who was presented with chronic cough. Chest radiography revealed an abnormal mass-like shadow in the right lower pulmonary zone. A contrast enhanced computed tomography showed an 11 cm solid, cystic mixed mass on the right lower lobe. A right lower lobectomy was performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery without complications. The gross specimen showed a massive cavitation with multiloculated cysts of varying size, consistent with CCAM, along with noticeable granulomatous inflammation. Non-tuberculosis mycobacteria were isolated from a bronchial wash specimen, and the resected tissue homogenates were positive for Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex by polymerase chain reaction.
Methanol extract prepared from the fruitbody of Phellinus linteus (EPL) showed anti-tumor and immune-stimulating activities. The invasion activity of Bl6-F10 melanoma cells through a reconstituted basement membrane to the collagen-coated lower surface of the filters was inhibited about 67% by EPL (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml). Also, EPL inhibited the expression of the mRNA for MMP-2 and MMP-9. In vivo treatment of C57BL/6 mice (150 mg/kg) with EPL for 14 days, the pulmonary colonization was found to be inhibited about 75%. Using reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, we found that cytokine IL-12 and INF-${\gamma}$ genes were induced by EPL. Furthermore, EPL stimulated the proliferation of CD4$\^$+/(33.5%) and CD8$\^$+/(17.7%) in mouse splenocytes.

To evaluate the antithrombotic and antiallergic properties of rhaponticin extracted from Rhei Rhizoma, the in vitro and ex vivo inhibitory activities of rhaponticin and its metabolite, rhapontigenin, were measured. These compounds inhibited in vitro ADP- and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. Rhapontigenin was more potent, with $IC_{50}$ values of 4 and $70{\;}{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In ex vivo ADP- and collagen-induced rat platelet aggregation, these compounds also exhibited a potent inhibitory effect. The antiplatelet aggregation effects of rhaponticin and rhapontigenin were more potent than those of aspirin. Rhapontigenin showed significant protection from death due to pulmonary thrombosis in mice. Rhapontigenin also showed the strongest inhibitory activity against $\beta-hexosaminidase$ release induced by DNP-BSA. These compounds inhibited PCA reaction in mice. Rhapontigenin intraperitoneally administered showed the strongest inhibitory activity and significantly inhibited PCA at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg, with inhibitory activities of 48 and 85%, respectively. The inhibitory activity of orally administered rhaponticin was stronger than that of intraperitoneally administered rhaponticin. These results suggest that rhaponticin, in the rhizome of Rhei Rhizoma, is a prodrug that has extensive antiallergic and antithrombotic properties.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of gym ball stabilization exercises on the physical functions of elementary school baseball players. Methods: The elementary school baseball players were assigned to an experimental group (n=21). The group performed gym ball stabilization exercises and the changes in the physical functions were measured using the visual response speed test, functional movements, physical balance ability, and pulmonary function. Results: The results of the visual response speed test showed changes in the time response speed. There was a significant change in the number of touches in 15 seconds in the upper arms and left and right legs (p<0.05) after 10 weeks. Also, there was a significant change in the reaction times of the left and right legs after 10 weeks (p<0.05). Further, there were significant differences in functional movements involving rotational stability and the total functional scores after 10 weeks (p<0.05). The player's body balance ability showed a significant difference after 10 weeks in the posterior-lateral and posterior-medial composite scores of the left and right legs (p<0.05). There was a significant change in the forced lung capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 second after 10 weeks (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results show that the gym ball stabilization exercises effectively improved the visual response speed and functional movements, balance, and vital capacity of elementary school baseball players.
Rhizome of Alisma orientale has been used as a traditional medicine for treating kidney diseases in East Asian countries. Its inhibitory effects on hypersensitivity responses have been reported for methanol extracts, with alisol B 23-acetate (AB23Ac) being the most active constituent among six terpenes in inhibiting the direct passive Arthus reaction. However, whether AB23Ac has efficacy against allergic asthma has not been tested to date. The in vivo efficacy of AB23Ac in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma mouse model was evaluated by administrating AB23Ac before OVA sensitization or OVA challenge in BALB/c mice. AB23Ac suppressed antigen-induced degranulation of RBL-2H3 mast cells in a concentration-dependent manner. The administration of AB23Ac both before OVA sensitization and OVA challenge greatly lowered pulmonary resistance and the increase in immune cell counts and inflammatory responses around the peribronchial and perivascular regions. In addition, the inflammatory cytokine levels of Th1/Th2/Th17 cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid decreased in the AB23Ac-treated groups. AB23Ac reduced the number of PAS-stained cells in the lungs. Furthermore, a computer modeling study indicated that AB23Ac can bind tightly to spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk). These results suggest that AB23Ac may ameliorate allergic asthma by suppressing immune responses in dendritic cells during sensitization and in mast cells during challenge periods.
