In this study compressive and tensile load tests have been performed to investigate reinforcing effect and load transfer mechanism of small diameter piles installed in the foundation soil for the marine suspension bridge. Load tests were carried out on steel plate with diameters of 50cm, 100cm and 150cm varying loads starting from 39 tons up to 314 tons. Small diameter piles were proved to behavior like as friction piles and loads were not transmitted to the bottom of piles. From pull-out tests, the uplift capacity of small diameter piles was largely influenced by reinforcing materials compared to frictional resistance between piles and adjacent soils. The bearing capacity of small diameter piles appeared to be higher than the ultimate bearing capacity evaluated using static formulae. The load carrying capacity of small diameter piles was superior to the bored piles with a similar size. Thus, ultimate bearing capacity estimated from static formulae can provide conservative designs and thereby resulting in economic disadvantages. A further study to accumulate data regarding various soil conditions is recommended for an improved estimation of bearing capacity of piles with small diameter.
In order to prove the applicability of rock bolts with compressible spacers, laboratory model tests and large scale model tests were conducted. Laboratory model tests were performed in various distance of compressible spacers to determine the optimal distance of compressible spacers. The optimal distance of compressible spacers was found that is 1/4 of rock bolts unit length. Large scale model tests that the size was 0.6 m (diameter) ${\times}$ 4.45 m (length) were conducted. Test results showed that pull out resistance could be increased up to 15% larger than that of unused case by using compressible spacers.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of nano-contact condition on the nano-adhesion phenomena. SPM(scanning probe microscope) tips with different radius of curvature were fabricated by a series of masking and etching processes. DLC(diamond-like carbon) and W-DLC (tungsten-incorporated diamond-like carbon) were coated on (100) silicon wafer by PACVD(plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition). Pull-off forces of Pure Si-wafer, DLC and W-DLC were measured with SPM(scanning probe microscope). Also, the same series of tests were carried out with the tips with different radius of curvature. Results showed that DLC and W-DLC showed much lower pull-off force than Si-wafer and Pull-off force increased with the tip radius.
Adhesion tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of temperature on the adhesion behavior between a PMMA film and a fused silica lens in the micro scale. For the tests, a microtribometer system was specially designed and constructed. The pull-off forces on the PMMA film were measured under atmospheric condition as the temperature of the PMMA film was increased from 300 K to 443 K and decreased to 300 K. The contact area between the PMMA film and the lens was observed during the test. The adhesion behavior was changed with the change of the PMMA surface state as the temperature increased. In glassy state below 363 K, the pull-off force did not change with the increase of temperature. In rubbery state from 383 K to 413 K, the pull-off force increased greatly as the temperature increased. In addition, the area of contact was enlarged. In viscous state above 423 K, the fingering instability was observed in the area of contact when the PMMA film contacted with the lens. It was also found that the adhesion behavior can be varied with the thermal history of the PMMA film. The residual solvent in the PMMA film could emerge to the PMMA surface due to the heating and reduced the pull-off force.

Precast concrete segment arch system has an economic and construct ability that combined with advantage of precast concrete and arch behavior. A precast concrete segment arch system with outrigger is consisted of segmented precast panels, a steel outrigger rib, and V-strip to connect precast panels with a steel outrigger rib and cast-in-place anchors in precast panels to connect V-strip should have sufficient pull-out capacity to form its arch shape by site lifting for assembled precast panels and outriggers. However, it is difficult to secure its embedment depth due to the relatively shallow thickness of precast panel. It can be also occurred that flexure deformation of precast panels caused by its pull-out behaviors. In this study, pull-out capacity of cast-in-place anchor was examined for construction of precast concrete segment arch system with outriggers. Therefore, a total of 24 precast panel specimens were fabricated to examine pull-out capacities of cast-in-place anchor in precast panels, and installation depth of anchors, diameter of anchors and wire mesh effects for the precast panel were examined. From this pull-out tests, its pull-out capacities and failure modes were evaluated and the type of the cast-in-place anchor applicable to the precast concrete segment panel arch system with outriggers was determined from comparison of the design specification values.
The objectives of the present study are 1)to find the effect of the diameter of transpedicular screws on their fixational strength in pedicles under static pull-out loading, 2)to determine the biomechanical correlation between the pedicle diameter and the screw diameter, and 3)to find the effects of other factors in the screw design, such as materials, screw pitch, thread height and shape on their fixational strength. Biomechanical tests (Test I) were performed to evaluate the effect of the screw diameter on pull-out strength by using 60 porcine pedicls and six groups of custom-made pedicle screws with different diameters (the major and the minor diameter of the screws used in the testing varied from 4mm upto 9mm and from 3mm upto 8mm, respectively) while all other factors (materials, screw pitch, thread height and shape etc.) were fixed. In Test II, by using 61 porcine pedicles, the relationship between the ratio of the pedicle diameter and the screw diameter(=aspect ratio) of the custum-made screw and the pull-out strength of the screw was investigated. Test III was performed with 94 porcine pedicles and 8 different types of the commercial screws from 6 major productors in order to determine the effect of the screw diameter, pitch and the thread shape on the pull-out strength of the screw, respectively. The results of Test I showed that the axial pull-out resistance of the screw could be increased prportionaly to the screw diameter(P<0.05). But this increase in the pull-out resistance did not found when the screws of 4mm or 9mm in the diameter were employed. It was found from the results of Test II that the screws had its maximum pull-out resistant force when the aspect ratio ranging 40 - 69% (P<0.05). based on the results for the major diameter against the minor diameter of screw, the maximal pull-out resistance was found at 60-65% (P<0.05). According to these biomechanical testing results, it seems that the screw with a moderately large pitch is more desirable and the buttress-shaped screw can provide stronger fixation than the V-shape one can, if other designal factor and conditions were fixed.
This paper investigated the structural capacity of the CT shear connectors, which is a kind of the perfobond rib and functions as an anchor transferring the tension force in the joint between a composite PHC wall pile and a bottom slab. The direct pull-out test was performed for various specimens. From failure modes and load-displacement curves, it was found that transverse rebars should be placed to holes in a web to restrict pull-out failure of CT shear connectors. The results of additional tests for specimens with transverse rebars and various support lengths indicated that all specimens were failed by the tension failure of PHC pile before pull-out failure of CT shear connector and concrete pull-out failure. Thus, the CT shear connector could endure the tension force between the PHC wall pile and the bottom slab.

Roof cladding of buildings are required for the measures about the 'screw pull-out' which causes the casualties and the property damage by typhoons. In this study, the pull-out resistance was increased by increasing the penetration depth of the screw installing a ironware called 'insert nut' on the roof cladding frame. Tensile tests were conducted to compare the pull-out strengths of a general screw-joint and a nut insert joint. Roof cladding that is actually being used in the field was produced using the 'solid work' and then the roof claddings using a general screw-joint and a nut insert joint were compared by a static test and dynamic test.

In this study, pull-out tests were performed to investigate the effects of stirrup spacing, rebar diameter, and corrosion rate on bond strength of deformed bars in reinforced concrete. Twelve pull-out specimens with different stirrup spacing, rebar diameter, and corrosion rate were prepared following the RILEM RC6 guidelines. The test results showed that the bond strength of specimens with stirrups increased when the corrosion rate was less than 3%, whereas it decreased when the corrosion rate was more than 3%. On the other hand, the bond strength of specimens without stirrups decreased as the corrosion rate increased. The effect of rebar diameter was less significant compared to those of stirrup spacing and corrosion rate. A bond strength model for pull-out specimens was proposed considering stirrup ratio and corrosion rate, and the model showed the lowest error among the previous models.
