  • There is a widespread concern that women's increasing involvement in dual role (job plus family role) may harm their physical health. Longevity of women is longer than that of men. By contrast, prevalence rate is higher in women than men, and No. of prevalence days, No. of days in bed and No. of days with treatment are more in women. Generally, women live longer, but women are worse in health status than men. Rate of labor participation in women is increasing gradually in Korea. This study presents an analysis of the relationships between employment. marital status and health for both Korean women and men to examine how women's increasing involvements in dual role affect their physical health. The data used in this analysis were collected by The National Statistical Office in the spring of 1992. Households, which were sampled by using a three-stage stratified cluster sampling method, were interviewed. Response rate was 99.43%. Of these, student or widowed or divorced people were excluded. 47,552 women and men aged 21-50 were available for the analysis. Health status was measured by self-assessed health status (1=excellent, 5=poor), No. of prevalent days, No. of days with treatment, and No. of days in bed in two previous weeks. And control variables are age, and education. Research findings are as follows : 1. Men have better self-rated health, fewer prevalent days, fewer days in bed, and fewer days with treatment than women. 2. The employed are more healthier than the non-employed. 3. Unmarried people are more healthier than married people. 4. Interaction effects of sex, marital status, employment are significant. This finding shows that effects of empolyment, marital status on health status is not same for women and men. 5. For male, employed people are more healthier than non-employed people. Unmarried people are more healthier than married people. This differences are significant. For female, The employed are more healthier than the non-employed. However, no differences are noticed between the married and the unmarried in health status. In conclusion, there is no evidence that women's involvements in dual role affect their physical health negatively.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the educational gap between 250 local governments, by their location and size, in terms of the efficiency of education. For the analysis, this paper employed the data envelopment analysis(DEA), which can consider input and output factors simultaneously, as a research method. Input factor included student number per teacher, student number per class, student number per staff, and donation fund per student, whereas college entrance rate and employment rate were used as output factor. The data were collected through 'the school information' website. Research target was confined to high schools, taking into consideration the variables used for output factor. As a result of analysis, while the high schools in local governments around the capital area showed the high density of students in terms of input factor, college entrance rate and employment rate were higher in the high schools of non-capital area. An efficiency score was also higher in the schools of the non-capital area in both aspects of BCC and CCR models. By the size of local governments, high schools in agricultural-type and small-sized local governments were higher in the efficiency of education, compared to those in populated local governments.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate medical students' perceptions and intentions regarding patient safety during clinical clerkships. Methods: Cross-sectional and self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted on 34 students from one medical school using a modified version of the Medical Student Safety Attitudes and Professionalism Survey (MSSAPS). We assessed $4^{rd}-year$ medical students' perceptions of the cultures ('safety', 'teamwork', and 'error disclosure'), 'behavioural intentions' concerning patient safety issues and 'overall patient safety'. The overall response rate was 66.4%. Results: Among safety domains, "teamwork culture" was rated highest. "Error disclosure culture" received the lowest ratings. Regarding the error disclosure domain, only 10% of respondents reported that they have received education or training on how to disclose medical error to patients. Independent of survey domains, when students were asked "Overall, do you think your hospital is safe based on your clinical rotation?", 61.8% reported that the hospital was safe. Conclusions: Assessing students' perceptions of safety culture can provide clerkship directors and educators with information that enhances the educational environment and promotes patient safety. Discussions of medical errors, patient safety, and how best to incorporate an analysis of these issues into the existing curriculum are needed.

  • The present study was conducted to analyze the degree of changes in knowledge and attitude toward health, arid health promoting activities after providing health education intervention for a year to elementary school children, to examine the factors effecting knowledge, attitude and health promoting practices for obesity and diet, and to analyze whether changes are present in health level according to changes in knowledge on health and health promoting activities. After conducting a pre-survey rio 354 subjects of 3rd and 4th grade students and their mothers in the city area of Kyungju, in April, 1999, 301. responses with the responding rate of 85% were obtained. Final analysis was done with 231 pairs of a student and his/her mother who could be followed up after a year among 301 pairs of the respondents, excluding those students who transferred, those who were excused from school early, those who did not take abdominal fat measurements, and those students and mothers respondents whose survey was incomplete. Based on the changes before and after the intervention, the scores on knowledge about obesity and diet showed a significant difference in normal weight group, and the scores on the attitude toward obesity and diet increased significantly in obesity group but decreased significantly in normal weight group(p<0.01). The scores of practicing health promoting activities were significantly increased in both groups, and although the waist-hip ratio (WHR) did not change in obesity group, the rate increased significantly in normal weight group(p<0.01). As for changes on the knowledge of obesity and diet before and after the intervention while dividing the scores into 3 levels based on the scores of the pre-survey and compared to changes in the scores one year after, in the case of the changes in the scores in the 1st third, the score on the knowledge about obesity and diet changed from 1.3 in the pre survey to 3.7 after the intervention, showing significant increase(p<0.01) The scores of practicing health promoting activities for obesity and diet were significantly increase in all three levels(p<0.01), and the degree of changes in the scores was 7.0 points in the 1st third, 4.4 points for the and third and 1.8 points for the 3rd third, showing a significant difference among the three levels(p<0.01). It was shown that the increase in BMI in those students whose mothers have the education level higher than university was significantly higher than the increase in BMI in those students whose mothers have the education level under high school, and those students whose mothers are in their 30's showed higher changes in practicing health promoting activities for obesity and diet. When the scores of mothers' knowledge and attitude toward obesity and diet were compared by dividing the scores into tertile, the score of students' knowledge changed significantly according to the scores of mothers' attitude toward obesity and diet. In multiple regression analysis on changes in the scores of knowledge about obesity and diet, the student variables of the degree of awareness on the seriousness of obesity, and the scores of previous knowledge on diet and obesity were selected the significant variables, and among the mother variables, the degree of guiding the child on diet and the education level were the significant variables. In multiple regression analysis to analyze the factors effecting changes in the attitude toward obesity and diet, the student variables of the BMI, scores of previous knowledge on obesity and diet, and scores on the previous attitude toward obesity and diet were shown to be significant. In multiple regression analysis on the factors effecting changes in health promoting activities for obesity and diet, the student variables of the BMI, scores on the previous attitude toward obesity and diet, and changes in the scores of obesity and diet were selected the significant variables.

  • This study was to promote the business of school dental health program in community area and to present the improvement of oral health between public health center's group of SungDong elementary school, one that started on March 1999, and the control group that is going to operate school oral health center from 2009 in primary school. It was based on the data of more than 10 years running school based oral health section. We compared the data of SungDong group with the one of control group to get a survey of dental caries experience. The preventive effect of the caries was estimated by the difference of DMFT indices between the sample group and control group. The experience rate of caries of the sample was 12.6 percentage lower than the control group and index of the experience rate of caries for the SungDong group was two times less. It showed that the sealing rate of the SungDong group composed of pit and fissure sealant was 67.7 percentage high. The prevention rate which was calculated by DMFT index was 46.34 percentage in the SungDong group that was the highest score for the fifth grade student as a 60.5 percentage. This program contributes to the improvement of the dental caries reduction in this school oral health promotion program.
