  • The South Korean construction industry has shown a high proportion of industrial accidents (approximately 28% of whole injuries) and the continuously increasing accident rate. Although many safety research emphasized that the 3E (Enforcement, Education, and Engineering) approach is a potential solution to enhance workplace safety, there should be benefits to consider psychological (i.e., Emotional) effects on the safety performance since most construction works are human-oriented. Thus, understanding construction workers' psychological conditions can be a priority. This research studied the relationships between psychological conditions-which cover stress, personal temperament, emotional disturbance, and drinking habit-and specific safety-related factors including safety motivation and knowledge, and safety performance of individual workers at a construction site. This study conducted a survey of 430 respondents and analyzed the data with the multiple linear regressions. The results imply persistence, trait anxiety, and problem-focused coping style are the critical factors that should be controlled for enhancing jobsite safety. Finally, the research outcomes could be applied to build a strategic safety management plan for a construction manager.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the factors for self-rated health by gender in South Korean adolescents. Methods: The population consisted of a nationally representative sample of adolescents(n= 37,414 boys, 37,522 girls) in middle and high school who completed the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(KYRBWS) in 2011. Using logistic regression analysis, self-rated health was regressed on all predictors, including socioeconomic factors, behavioral and psychological factors. All analysis were conducted according to gender. Results: Girls showed more negative self rated health than boys (respectively 28.4%, 40.7%). Adolescent perceptions of health was associated with socioeconomic status, behavioral and psychological factors. Logistic regression analysis revealed that physical activity, body weight perception, despair, level of happiness and stress were the main influencing factors. Conclusions: The findings show that adolescent perceptions of their health are associated with overall sense of functioning, which are associated with health behaviors and psychological factors. Further interventions that focus on improving health behaviors and psychological health may make adolescents more healthy.

  • The recent entry into information society as well as the development and universalization of the Internet through rapid development of ICT technology produced a new educational method called PMP learning. PMP learning overcomes restrictions of previous education methods in terms of time and space and allows the learners to customize their learning environments according to their leads, providing voluntary education that centers on the learners. This study aims to verify the causal relationship in academic achievement of PMP learners through the theory of basic psychological desire, learning satisfaction, and learning metastasis. In order to accomplish this, a study model which applies perceived autonomy, perceived competence, and perceived relationship, which are major variables of the theory of basic psychological desire, was presented. For practical verification of the study model, survey analysis was conducted for students of R High School in Hamyang. Through this, the study aims to provide basic materials for improving the academic achievement of learners in PMP learning. It also plans to suggest educational effects that can be obtained by supporting intrinsic motivation of learners.

  • Objective : This study examined whether Yangsung program (oriental psychological weight regulation model based on Confucian ideas) is effective on weight loss, self esteem, three factor on eating questionnaires(restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger), distortion of body-image and biochemistry of blood. Method : 23 women were assigned randomly into 2 groups; experimental group(n=10) and control group(n=13). Experimental group had 7 personal sessions consisting of personal Yangsung therapy, meditation, general diet and exercise education. Control group had personal sessions with general diet and exercise education once a week for 6 weeks. All subjects were weighed and evaluated with Rosenberg self esteem scale, distortion of body-image, biochemistry of blood and three factor eating questionnaires at the beginning and end of the program. Result : There is significant difference between two groups in changes of self esteem, disinhibition and hunger(p<0.05). There is no significant difference in weight reduction and BMI between two groups. Conclusion : This study showed a new possibility of unique psychological program for obesity characterized by its philosophical context.

  • Objectives: The present study examined relationships between socioeconomic status (SES) and obesity and body mass index (BMI) as well as the effects of health-related behavioral and psychological factors on the relationships. Methods: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted on Korean adults aged 20 to 79 years using data from the 2001, 2005, and 2007 to 2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic and linear regression models were used to estimate odds ratios of obesity and mean differences in BMI, respectively, across SES levels after controlling for health-related behavioral and psychological factors. Results: We observed significant gender-specific relationships of SES with obesity and BMI after adjusting for all covariates. In men, income, but not education, showed a slightly positive association with BMI (p<0.05 in 2001 and 2005). In women, education, but not income, was inversely associated with both obesity and BMI (p<0.0001 in all datasets). These relationships were attenuated with adjusting for health-related behavioral factors, not for psychological factors. Conclusions: Results confirmed gender-specific disparities in the associations of SES with obesity and BMI among adult Korean population. Focusing on intervention for health-related behaviors may be effective to reduce social inequalities in obesity.

  • This study was to investigate the learning motive types and degree of psychological well-being of middle-aged married women attending the Korea National Open University and to examine the difference in their psychological well-being according to the types of learning motives. For these purposes, a survey was conducted to 263 middle-aged married women from 36 to 60 at the Korea National Open University. The findings were as follows: First, learning motive types of middle-aged women could be classified into 3 types; a non-oriented type, an activity and goal-oriented type and a multi-oriented type. A multi-oriented types were the most popular among those. Second, the overall level of self-respect was above the median, but the life satisfaction level was below the median. Third, there was difference in their self-respect level according to the learning motive types. That is, students who had a multi-oriented learning motive were higher self-respect level than those who had an activity and goal-oriented learning motive. Therefore, lifelong education is very significance in these days when average life span is prolonged.

  • This meta-analysis investigated the effects on arm motor impairment, arm motor function and disability, and psychological aspects of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) for upper extremity hemiparesis following stroke, based on Korean studies. A comprehensive search of the complete Korean studies information service system (KISS), Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), Korea National Library, and the Korean Medical Database to September 2011 was conducted. Eleven eligible controlled clinical trials compared CIMT to a control group or an alternative treatment. All outcome measures of arm motor impairment, arm motor function and disability, and psychological aspects were pooled for calculating effect size. The overall effect size of CIMT was .700 (95% confidence interval=.482~.918). The CIMT programs showed large effect on the aspect of arm motor function and disability (the effect size is .920) and the psychological aspect (the effect size is .946). The effect of CIMT on arm motor impairment was moderate (the effect size is .588). These results show that CIMT may improve upper extremity motor impairment, function and disability, and psychological aspects following stroke. However, these results were based on a small number of studies, and not all of them were randomized control trials. Additional research is needed to include larger well-designed trials to resolve these uncertainties.
