  • This study was conducted to investigate the degree of PSI (self-evaluative awareness of problem solving ability) in PMHNP (psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners) and to identified the factors predicting problem solving ability of them, in order to provide basic data for the development of the specific education programs to improve problem solving ability. Data was collected from 355 subjects who have the certificates of PMHNP working in hospitals and public centers. Chun Seok Kyun's instruments (1993) based on the Heppner and Petersen's Problem Solving Inventory (1982) was used to determine PMHNPs' PSI. The results were as follows; 1. The average score of PSI of PMHNP was $2.81\pm0.23$. Of the three factors. there marked the lowest score in the factor 3. personal control $(2.56\pm0.43)$, and the highest score was in the factor 1. problem-solving confidence $(2.95\pm0.34)$. 2. The differences in PSI were significant for degree of education and career in psychiatric settings (p=0.000l, p=0.0187). 3. Job satisfaction was the highest factor predicting PSI of PMHNP$(17.9\%)$. When degree of education, career in psychiatric setting and marital status were added, the total predictors explained $24.3\%$. As a result, it is necessary to conduct further research in relation to the problem-solving process, the development of education program. skill acquisition and measurement of problem solving in nursing practice.

  • Background:Serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphism region(5-HTTLPR) and catechol-O-methyltransferase( COMT) genes are thought to be important factors in some personality traits and the etiology of anxiety disorder. The goal of this study was to determine the role of these genes in personality traits. Method:The participants included 116 healthy adults with no history of psychiatric disorders and other physical illness for the last 6 months. All participants were tested by Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI). The 5-HTTLPR, COMT val158met gene polymorphisms were analyzed with PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction). Differences on TCI dimensions and sub-scales among groups were examined with t-test and ANOVA. Result:There were possible relationships of the 5-HTTLPR with self-transcendence(P=0.050) and COMT val158met polymorphism with cooperativeness(P=0.053). Conclusion:We found associations between 5-HTTLPR, COMT polymorphisms and the some TCI character dimensions. Further studies of polymorphisms of other genes and their interactions may clarify the complex relationship between personality and genes.

  • In this review, we give an overview of psychiatric perspectives on environmental disease. The concept of genetic heritability and its meaning with regard to environmental risk factors will be discussed. Recent ideas of gene-environment interaction and neurodevelopmental disorder in psychiatry will also be introduced. This article discusses the environmental risk factors for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism, the two major environmental diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders in psychiatry. Given that both ADHD and autism are complex conditions, the etiology is likely to involve multiple genes of moderate effect interacting with environmental factors. We will introduce recent environmental issues related to these two disorders.

  • Objective The present study aimed to investigate relationship among cognitive factors (working memory and processing speed) and fluid reasoning (Gf) in psychiatric patients using a standardized clinical tool. Methods We included the responses of 115 heterogeneous patients who were diagnosed with the MINI-Plus 5.0 and WAIS-IV/WMS-IV was administered. For our analysis, structured equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to evaluate which cognitive variables are closely related to the Gf. Results The results showed that the visual working memory was the strongest predictor of the Gf compared to other cognitive factors. Conclusion Processing speed was capable of predicting the Gf, when visual working memory was controlled. The inter-relationship among the Gf and other cognitive factors and its clinical implications were further discussed.
