  • Snowboarder accidents at ski resorts are increasing; therefore, it is essential to wear protective wrist, hip and knee protectors when snowboarding. However, most studies focus on the improvement of gear or expansion of safety facilities with few studies on protectors that directly safeguard the body from accidents caused by tumbling. Protectors currently on the market do not properly consider the needs of the users. Therefore, this study investigates the reality of usage and satisfaction rate of those that use snowboarding protectors along with factors deemed important upon wearing them to provide the grounds for the development of comfortable protectors. Subjects were 1,058 adults in their 20s to 40s. First, a survey was conducted regarding demographic traits as well as the wearing and purchasing of protectors. Second, 325 people that purchased and wore protectors were investigated in regards to the wearing satisfaction rate of current commercial protectors. The results showed that 86% of the 1,058 subjects wore protectors; knee protectors (72%), hip protectors (57%) and wrist protectors (38%). Important factors upon purchasing and wearing satisfaction were studied according to demographic traits, snowboarding experience, and number of snowboard rides for one season. As a result, the damage rate increased along with the number of snowboard rides for one season. Important factors considered when purchasing varied significantly according to sex, age, snowboarding experience, and favored slopes. The results of this study will help in the design of comfortable protectors for snowboarders.

  • Purpose: This study validated the influential relations between the effects of emergency care quality, credibility of 119 emergency medical technicians (119 EMTs), and perceived usefulness and attitude of emergency care, focusing on the moderating effect of protectors' characteristics (education, experience, age, and recognition of patient severity). Methods: This study was based on elaboration likelihood and technology acceptance models. In total, 172 protectors with experience in utilizing prehospital service were surveyed from April 1 to July 31, 2011. Results: The results showed that the emergency care quality and the credibility of 119 EMTs were the main determinants of the perceived usefulness and attitude of emergency care, irrespective of the protector's characteristics (p <.001). In addition, the findings showed that the protector's intention of emergency care had a moderating role. The impact of the quality of emergency care on its perceived usefulness was greater for high-level protectors (p <.001). By contrast, the impact of the credibility of 119 EMTs on the perceived usefulness of emergency care was greater for low-level protectors (p <.001). Conclusion: The protectors' characteristics have different influences on the relations between the effects of emergency care quality, the 119 EMT credibility, and the perceived usefulness and attitude of emergency care.

  • Considering increasing demand for improved waist protectors for the elderly, in this study we sought to design a waist protector that reflects the body characteristics, preferences, and satisfactions of the elderly. A survey conducted to investigate elderly satisfaction with existing waist protectors, as well as their preferences in product function, design, and characteristics, found that consumers are not satisfied with current waist protector offerings and would prefer protectors that allow greater freedom to perform physical activities and that are more easily accessible. Based on the survey, we developed a guideline on function, design, and characteristics, resulting in four new waist protector designs: A and B for men, and C and D for women. Significant preference differences according to gender were reflected in the designs. For example, designs for female waist protectors focused much more on improving tightness, size, freedom of movement, and easy attachment or detachment than designs for male waist protectors did. Evaluation of satisfaction with new designs suggests that new designs meet the satisfaction criteria of elderly consumers, who express willingness to purchase and use them.

  • This study is on the evaluation of three kinds of surface protectors for protecting reinforced concrete against corrosion of reinforcing steel by chloride attack and carbonation. In this study, the test has been carried out on the performance of specimens applied with surface protectors for anti-corrosion and anti-carbonation. The result showed that specimens applied with the three kinds of surface protectors, were excellent in resistance to the corrosion of reinforcing steel and carbonation. Especially the specimen applied with finish coating in conjunction with hydrophobic primer showed great reduction in the corrosion of reinforcing steel and carbonation.

  • This study is on the evaluation of double surface protection method using water repellent primer and final top coat to protect concrete. Water repellent agent has been applied on the final top coat to protect concrete. However, to make up for the weakness to the ultraviolet of the water repellent, the work procedure of these protectors is done vice versa. This combination of protectors was compared with existing ones in this study. Even though the final top coat was applied on the water repellent primer, its adhesive strength met to KS F 4936-' 03 with other protectors used in this study. All surface protectors used in this study were excellent in protecting concrete. Especially, in case of applying with final top coat in conjunction with water repellent primer, the resistance against chloride ion penetration and neutralization by $CO_2$ was more efficient than other surface protectors used in this study under this given condition.

  • This study aims to develop knee protectors that provide high safety and fitness, while incorporating a motion-adaptable 3D-printed pad. These protectors were evaluated by individuals who experience knee discomfort or pain. The results are as follows. First, the 3Dprinted pad design of a hexagonal mesh structure, which is modeled for excellent appearance and knee movement. Each unit of the mesh has a outer layer of 2mm thick, a spacer layer of 1 mm in diameter, and is connected by a 1.5 mm bridge. The bridge was extended up to 1.2 cm. Second, the knee brace was designed in three types - cylinder, strap, and combination by Universal design. Impact protection measurements of the three knee protectors demonstrated roughly 80% reduction in impact. Third, based on usability evaluation, cylinder type protectors have the highest ratings in most areas, primarily because of their ease of use. The strap type protector received positive reviews in terms of appearance and care, and the combination type provided stable knee protection. This study demonstrated the potential industrial application of 3D printing technology by designing and evaluating protective products for the human body. The results of this study are expected to aid knee protector manufacturers in developing practical products and promoting the development of protective equipment for other body parts or purposes.

  • Green water impact occurs frequently on offshore platform due to waves with a height greater relative to the freeboard of the structure. This phenomenon exerts a large impact load on the deck. In this paper, offshore platform models with green water protectors of various shapes were fixed to the center of a 3D wave tank to measure the impact pressure acting on the various points on deck and protectors. The impact pressure distribution differed depending on the protector shape, and various patterns of wave creeping up the protector were observed. The protector shape that exerted the lowest pressure impact on the deck will be useful in the deck design of offshore platform, and the model test results will be expected to be used for designers to select the best protector form.

  • This paper deals with a proper installation methods of SPDs for information-oriented and computerized equipments. Since the information and computerized equipments have AC power lines and communication lines, the potential difference by lightning surge occurs between grounding points of the AC power lines and subscriber protectors, and it causes the flashover and damage. So, we have investigated the effect of the installation methods of surge protectors on the control of overvoltages, using a real-sized test circuit with a customer's facility. As a consequence, it was confirmed that the protection methods by installation of SPDs on the neighbor branch circuit was effective.
