  • Civil structures should be designed with the lowest cost and longest lifetime possible and without service failure. The efficient and sustainable use of materials in building design and construction has always been at the forefront for civil engineers and environmentalists. Timber is one of the best contenders for these purposes particularly in terms of aesthetics; fire protection; strength-to-weight ratio; acoustic properties and seismic resistance. In recent years, timber has been used in commercial and taller buildings due to these significant advantages. It should be noted that, since the launch of the modern building standards and codes, a number of different structural systems have been developed to stabilise steel or concrete multistorey buildings, however, structural analysis of high-rise and multi-storey timber frame buildings subjected to lateral loads has not yet been fully understood. Additionally, timber degradation can occur as a result of biological decay of the elements and overloading that can result in structural damage. In such structures, the deficient members and joints require strengthening in order to satisfy new code requirements; determine acceptable level of safety; and avoid brittle failure following earthquake actions. This paper investigates performance assessment and damage assessment of older multi-storey timber buildings. One approach is to retrofit the beams in order to increase the ductility of the frame. Experimental studies indicate that Sprayed Fibre Reinforced Polymer (SFRP) repairing/retrofitting not only updates the integrity of the joint, but also increases its strength; stiffness; and ductility in such a way that the joint remains elastic. Non-linear finite element analysis ('pushover') is carried out to study the behaviour of the structure subjected to simulated gravity and lateral loads. A new global index is re-assessed for damage assessment of the plain and SFRP-retrofitted frames using capacity curves obtained from pushover analysis. This study shows that the proposed method is suitable for structural damage assessment of aged timber buildings. Also SFRP retrofitting can potentially improve the performance and load carrying capacity of the structure.

  • Oral history research is carried out through collecting information about a living person. The data collected from an oral history project is not a mere fact or a mass of information but accounts of persons who reveal their own personalities. For this reason, oral history research and data collection and the use of such data must be based on rigorous ethical standards. The Bioethics and Safety Law shares a similar view on human subject research, and the Institutional Review Boards includes human subject research as a subject of review and management. However, the Bioethics and Safety Law's protection of personalities and human rights focuses on life sciences methodologies, which are not suitable for qualitative research, such as an oral history of a value oriented and critical approach to human beings. This study examines the details of the Bioethics and Safety Law related to human subject research and the problems that may arise when this law is applied to subjects in humanities and social sciences such as oral history. Through this study, alternative methodologies, which can be used for oral history research, while maintaining academic autonomy, are suggested.

  • As seen in recent cases of hacking in financial services, attackers are attempting to hacking trustee with poor security management, rather than directly hacking a financial company. As a result, the consignor is strengthening the security check and control of the trustee, but small trustee has difficulties to invest in information security with the lack of computer facilities and the excessive cost of security equipment. In this paper I investigate the vulnerability of personal information processing life cycle standards in order to enhance the security of small consignee that receive personal information form the credit card company. To solve the vulnerability the company should use litigation management system constructed on cloud computing service and install VPN to secure confidentiality and intergrity in data transfer section. Also, to enhance the security of users, it is suggested to protect personal credit information by installing PC firewall and output security on user PC.

  • The management of emerging infectious diseases cannot help but completely depend on non-pharmaceutical interventions in the early stages of the outbreak. Consequently, South Korea has developed and implemented the 3T (test-trace-treat) models, non-pharmaceutical infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The IPC measures have gained global attention, rendering them to be essential in the development of a shareable, reusable, and applicable protocol for future pandemics. This study was conducted to identify the requirements necessary for standardizing the IPC measures. Three new work items of the 18 3T models were proposed to ISO/TC 304 (International Organization for Standardization/Technical Committee 304; healthcare organization management). Requirements for each IPC measure, identified by participating members (P-members) countries during the ISO ballots, were analyzed in this study. The three new work items were approved by the P-members countries after a 3-month ballot. There was a consensus that the three IPC measure models should be International Standards (IS). Other comments include (1) the models should include not only COVID-19 but also any respiratory pandemic; and (2) keep donning of level D protection at screening sites as an optional protocol, in consideration for the lack of personal protective equipment. Standardization is a systematic process of developing internationally agreed-upon wisdom and knowledge that consider and respect the diversity and universality of each country. It is expected that such standardized applicable IPC measure models contribute to global efforts to rapidly respond to a public health emergency of international concern during its early stages.
