억양과 초점에 관한 화용론적 연구 (A pragmatically-oriented study of intonation and focus)

  • There is an indisputable connection between prosody and focus. The focal prominence in Korean, a prosodic realization of pitch prominence in an utterance, defines a focused constituent, the domain of which is identified by the Focus Identification Principle. To this is added the Basic Focus Rule which makes it possible to capture and interpret the focal domain, which can then be tested against the available context. The focal domain can be contextually made available by setting it off with information structure boundaries(I/S) identified by the Information Structure Identification Principle. The fragment of the utterance enclosed within the IS boundaries can be recognized as 'new' information with the help of the Focus Domain Identification Rule. Since information structures are pragmatically tied to semantic levels of grammatical systems, the Basic Focus Rule is now replaced by the Focal Prominence Principle ensuring the focal prominence within the focal domain. Close relationships exist between patterns of intonation and their expressiveness in terms of giving a pragmatically-oriented description of focus. This is particularly manifested in Korean sentences containing contrastiveness.

간투사 '아, 어'의 운율 유형 연구 (On the prosodic patterns of interjections /a, ${\partial}$/)

  • 이 논문은 국어 간투사 '아'와 '어'의 운율 유형을 살펴보고, 그 운율 유형이 담화상의 기능과 어떤 연관을 갖는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 간투사의 지속 시간은 후행 발화의 존재 여부에 따라 달라지면 '아'의 경우 '어'보다 뒤에 강세구가 더 많이 형성되는 양상을 보였다. '아'는 강세구 성조 LLa, LHa, 또는 경계 성조 L+L%, L+HL%로 나타났으며, '어'의 경우 경계 성조만 L+L%, L+HL%, HH%으로 나타났다. 두 간투사 모두 발화 상황이나 현재 상황에 대한 의외성이 클수록 발화 지속 시간이 짧고, 구 성조나 경계성조가 고조로 나타난다. 반대로 화자가 발화를 이해하는 정도가 깊고 이미 알고 있는 것을 다시 상기한다거나 오해를 해결했을 경우, 발화 지속 시간이 길어지고, 운율은 저조에서 수평조로 형성된다.

An Optimality Theoretic Analysis of Tonal Realization in Korean

  • This paper investigates edge effects on the relationship between the underlying tonal sequence and its surface realization in the IP-final Accentual Phrase within the Optimality Theoretic framework. I will examine the way in which AP tones are aligned with their associated syllables in IP-final position. In Korean. Jun's (1996) 'see-saw effect' does not allow any two identical tones if they are marking a boundary of a prosodic group. A phonetic experiment conducted in this paper suggests that the 'see-saw effect' only apply to H boundary tones. Furthermore, it will be shown that the timing of tonal peaks is determined through the ranking of a set of violable constraints. The AP tonal realization is achieved through the access to the global intonation in a complicated way. In the course of discussion, pitch patterns in IP-medial Accentual Phrase will also be discussed.

Acoustic analysis of Korean trisyllabic words produced by English and Korean speakers

  • The current study aimed to investigate the transfer of English word stress rules to the production of Korean trisyllabic words by L1 English learners of Korean. It compared English and Korean speakers' productions of seven Korean words from the corpus L2KSC (Rhee et al., 2005). To this end, it analyzed the syllable duration, intensity, and pitch. The results showed that English and Korean speakers' pronunciations differed markedly in duration and intensity. English learners produced word-initial syllables of greater intensity than Korean speakers, while Korean speakers produced word-final syllables of longer duration than English learners. However, these differences between the two speaker groups were not related to the expected L1 transfer. The tonal patterns produced by English and Korean speakers were similar, reflecting L1 English speakers' learning of the L2 Korean prosodic system.

인공와우이식 아동의 운율 특성 - 발화속도와 억양기울기를 중심으로 - (The Prosodic Characteristics of Children with Cochlear Implants with Respect to Speech Rate and Intonation Slope)

  • This study investigated speech rate and intonation slope (least square method; F0, quarter-tone) in normal and CI children's utterances. Each group consisted of 12 people and were divided into groups of children with CI operation (before 3;00), children with CI operation (after 3;00), and normal children. Materials are composed of four kinds of grammatical dialogue sentences which are lacking in respect. Given three groups as independent variables and both speech rate and intonation slope as dependent variables, a one-way ANOVA showed that normal children had faster speech rates and steeper intonation slopes than those of the CI group. More specifically, there was a statistically significant speech rate difference between normal and CI children in all of the sentential patterns but imperative form (p<.01). Additionally, F0 and qtone slope observed in sentential final word showed a significant statistical difference between normal and CI children in imperative form (f0: p<.01; q-tone: p<.05).

Feature Extraction Based on DBN-SVM for Tone Recognition

  • An innovative tone modeling framework based on deep neural networks in tone recognition was proposed in this paper. In the framework, both the prosodic features and the articulatory features were firstly extracted as the raw input data. Then, a 5-layer-deep deep belief network was presented to obtain high-level tone features. Finally, support vector machine was trained to recognize tones. The 863-data corpus had been applied in experiments, and the results show that the proposed method helped improve the recognition accuracy significantly for all tone patterns. Meanwhile, the average tone recognition rate reached 83.03%, which is 8.61% higher than that of the original method.

School Phonetics and How to Teach Prosody of English in Japan

  • This presentation will focus on building basic English Prosodic Skills which are very useful and helpful for Japanese learners of English. The focus first will be on recognizing the seven basic nuclear tones, analysing intonation structures, distinguishing intonation patterns and then on the way of improving speaking ability using sufficient verbal contents of intonation (mini-dialogue). My presentation deals mainly with some difficulties which Japanese learners of English have in the field of RP intonation, It is chiefly concerned with identifying, describing and analysing tone-group sequences. It sometimes happens that Japanese learners of English can pronounce isolated bounds correctly and read phonetic symbols sufficiently, bet have difficult problems in carrying out accurate prosodic features. The use of wrong intonation is sometimes the cause of misunderstanding of speaker's attitude, connotation and shades of meaning, etc.. However accurately students can pronounce the nuclear tone or tone-group of English, they have to learn how to connect tone-groups properly for suitable sequences in respect to meaning or implication. We are faced with the complicated theory of RF intonation on the one hand and difficult realization of it on the other. Japanese learners of English have special difficulties in employing "rising tune" and "falling + rising tune". If students are taught pitch movements by indicating dots graphically between two horizontal lines, they can easily understand the whole shape of pitch movements. In this presentation, I illuminate several tone-group sequences which are very useful for Japanese learning English intonation. Among them, four similar Pitch Patterns, such as, (1) (equation omitted)- type, (2) (equation omitted) - type, (3) (equation omitted) - type and (4) (Rising Head) (equation omitted)- type are clarified and other important tone-group sequences aye also highlighted from the point of view of teaching English as a foreign language. The intonation theory, tone marks and technical terms are, in all essentials, those of Intonation of Colloquial English by O'Connor, J. D. and Arnold, G. F., Longman, 2nd ed., 1982. The changes of tone are shown graphically between two horizontal lines representing the ordinary high and low zones of the utterance. A.C.Gimson (1981:314) : The intonation of English has been studied in greater detail and for longer than that of any other language. No definitive analysis, classifying the features of RP intonation, has yet appeared (though that presented by O'Connor and Arnold (1973) provides the most comprehensive and useful account from the foreign learner's point of view).

따라말하기 과제를 통한 자폐범주성 장애 아동과 일반 아동의 평서문과 의문문의 음향학적 특성 비교 (A study of the prosodic patterns of autism and normal children in the imitating declarative and interrogative sentences)

  • 언어의 운율은 억양, 리듬, 강세로 구성되어 있고 운율 요소는 상호 복합적인 작용을 통하여 언어의 고유한 리듬을 형성한다. 자폐범주성 장애 아동은 자연스러운 운율 학습에 어려움이 있어 정확한 의미와 정보 전달에 어려움이 있어 자폐범주성 장애 아동의 운율에 대한 연구가 중요하다. 평서문과 의문문 따라말하기 과제를 통하여 자폐범주성 장애 아동 집단과 일반 아동 집단 간의 운율 특성 차이를 구명하고 어말 길이에 따라 의문문에서의 음도기울기와 청자와의 지각관계를 알아보았다. 7-12세 일반 아동 30명, 자폐범주성 장애 아동 20명을 대상으로 언어 평가 후 20문장 따라말하기 과제를 실시하였다. 청지각 과제로는 115문장이 사용되었다. 자폐범주성 장애 아동이 일반 아동에 비해 음도와 강도가 높고, 발화속도가 느리며 음도 기울기가 낮았다. 자폐범주성 장애 아동은 평서문과 의문문의 산출에서 음도와 강도에 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 자폐범주성 장애 아동은 의문문 1음절에서 평서문과 가장 큰 기울기 차이를 보였으며 5음절 의문문 산출에서 가장 낮은 기울기 값을 보였다. 청지각 평가 결과 청자는 4.3%만 자폐범주성 장애 아동의 의문문을 의문문으로 지각하였다. 결과적으로 평서문과 의문문 따라말하기에서 자폐범주성 장애아동이 일반 아동에 비해 음도와 강도가 높고, 발화속도가 느리며, 낮은 음도기울기를 보였다. 이러한 운율패턴 때문에 청자는 의문문을 평서문으로 인식하였고 원인은 규명되지 않았지만 화용능력이나 다른 자폐적 특징의 결함과 관련이 있다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 자폐범주성 장애 아동의 이러한 억양 패턴을 확인하였고 운율 개선을 위한 치료 개발의 필요성을 제시했다.

경상 방언 내포문 의문사의 작용역 범주 지각 양상과 반응 속도 연구 (Patterns of categorical perception and response times in the matrix scope interpretation of embedded wh-phrases in Gyeongsang Korean)

  • 경상 방언 내포문 의문사의 작용역 지각 반응 시간과 범주 지각의 양상을 분석하였다. 지각 실험을 위한 자극은 내포문 의문사가 모문 작용역을 갖는 문맥이 주어진 하나의 문장을 40명의 화자가 발화한 것으로, 지각 실험은 24명이 참가하였다. 피험자는 40개의 자극에 대해 모문 작용역(설명 의문문)인지 또는 내포문 작용역(판정 의문문)인지를 선택하게 하는 강제 선택 실험을 3회 진행하고 그 반응 시간을 기록하였다. 모문 작용역 응답 수를 기준으로 자극을 정렬한 후 작용역 응답에 따른 반응 시간을 정렬 순서에 따라 시각화한 결과 모문과 내포문 작용역 응답이 범주적 지각의 결과임이 분명히 나타났으나, 이에 따른 반응 시간의 차이는 크게 나타나지 않았다. 화자에 따른 범주 지각 양상으로 볼 때, 작용역 해석에 영향을 주는 요인은 형태/통사적 제약과 운율 구조적 완결성으로 보이며, 한 요인의 가중치는 다른 요인의 가중치와 반비례 관계에 있는 것으로 해석할 수 있다.

불어의 음절구조 분석 -억양과 강세음절- (Analyse de la structure syllabique du francais)

  • This study aims to present some notes on the French syllabic structure based on the relation between the intonation pattern and the stressed syllable. The recent phonetico-phonological study is mainly focussed on the notion of syllable. However it is quite difficult to analyse the syllable structure because of its complexity. In this paper I have tried to analyse the French syllabic structure both in phonetics and in phonology. This paper contains three parts. First of all, in section 2, the notion of syllable and the French prosodic phenomena are reviewed phonetically, and is phonologically focused on the intonation pattern. Secondly, in section 3, I have analyzed the relation between the intonation. pattern and the stressed syllable in French based on CSL analyses. Finally, in section 4, I have suggested some syllabic structure patterns in French based on the analyses in section 3. This. is an attempt to further the inter-disciplinary study between phonetics and phonology, and also an attempt to settle on a model of phonological French syllabic structure. I have left the application of the result of this study as a future subject to study. But still, the result of this study can serve as a basic reference for those who are studying French and for students who are would like to learn about French syllabic structure.
