  • The temperature gradient in weldment changes the transit time and distorts the direction of the ultrasound beam to the higher temperature regions due to the lower sound speed in the hotter regions of the weldment. This paper describes a ray-tracing method for calculating the effects of temperature gradients on ultrasonic propagation in fillet arc weldig. In the method, weldment is conceptually devided into a number of layers and the refraction and sound speed at each layer is calculated using the temperature which calculated from analytical solution. Calculating the time and location of echoes arrived from various interfaces around a molten weld pool determines the optimum location of ultrasonic transducers and the correct position of flaws.

  • It is important to understand the vibrating behavior of plate structures for many engineering applications. In this study, vibration characteristics of strip plates which have finite width and infinite length are investigated theoretically and numerically. The waveguide finite element approach is used in this study which is known as an effect tool for waveguide structures. WFE method requires only cross-sectional FE model and uses theoretical harmonic solutions for the wave propagation along the longitudinal direction. First of all for a simple strip plate, WFE results are compared with theoretical ones such as the dispersion diagrams, point mobilities, etc. to validate the numerical model. Then in the numerical analysis, the several different types of longitudinal stiffeners are included to the plate model to investigate the effects of the stiffeners in terms of the dispersion curves and mobilities.

  • Edge cracks in cold rolling always influence to the quality of productions, while the "V" shaped cracks were propagated by passing the roll gap. We set up the sizes and shapes of initial cracks in simulation according to the references from real productions. Different to in hot rolling, the cracks in cold rolling couldn't be reduced from propagation automatically after generated, even if these could be reduced by changing the process parameters. In this paper, we described the affections of process parameters on the propagation of edge cracks, such as reduction ratio and tension. We predicted that the dependence of the cracks propagations of changing of process conditions and expected to gain the smaller edge cracks. By raising the reduction ratio, the cracks were propagated increasingly in both transverse and rolling directions. And as tension raise, the cracks became propagated in both directions in which transverse direction was less effectively.

  • Recently, there are many problems of service qualities such as regular-rapid-safe -comfortable transport, that was traditionally advantages in urban railway transportations. These problems cause train delays that affects consecutive schedule, capacity, operation plans, and it is hard to prevent the propagation of delay and find the recovery solution. Because the urban transport demands is continuously increased and the railway service is also expanded, the railway operation company makes efforts to improve operation performance and efficiency for passengers. In this paper, we analyse the issues and problems existing in the major operation line of high-density urban railways, and suggest the development direction of intelligent operation technology to improve the urban railway service by minimizing the occurrence and propagation of delay. And the result of numerical case study is also presented.

  • The objective of the present paper is to review and implement the most recent developments in the Spectral Element Method (SEM), as well as improve aspects of its implementation in the study of wave propagation by numerical simulation in elastic unbounded domains. The classical formulation of the method is reviewed, and the construction of the mass matrix, stiffness matrix and the external force vector is expressed in terms of matrix operations that are familiar to earthquake engineers. To account for the radiation condition at the external boundaries of the domain, a new absorbing boundary condition, based on the Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) is proposed and implemented. The new formulation, referred to as the Multi-Axial Perfectly Matched Layer (M-PML), results from generalizing the classical Perfectly Matched Layer to a medium in which damping profiles are specified in more than one direction.

  • The instrument landing system (ILS) is an international standard established by the International civil aviation organization (ICAO) as one of the landing support facilities for aircraft. This system consists of a localizer (LOC) that provides orientation information about the runway to indicate the approach direction, a glide path (GP) that indicates the appropriate approach glide slope, and three of marker beacons (MB) that indicates the distance to the runway landing edge. In this study, we predicted the received signal strength by altitude and distance for LOC signals transmitted from the ground and analyzed the difference with the signal strength measured in the actual environment. Our objective is to develop signal strength prediction technology and apply it to the real environment.

  • This paper estimates the direction of arrival of desired a target using propagation wave in spatial. Direction of arrival estimation is to find desired target position among received signal to receiver array antennas. In this paper, we estimated direction of arrival for target, by using cost function and high resolution MUSIC algorithm, in order to direction of arrival estimation, and calculated optimum weight vector. Through simulation, in regard to the estimation of the arrival direction of a target, the performances of the existing ESPRIT algorithm and the proposed algorithm were comparatively analyzed. In the estimation time of the arrival direction of a target object, the proposed algorithm showed an improvement of approximately as compared to the existing ESPRIT algorithm.

  • In this study, visualization of in-cylinder spray behavior and spark channel stretching by air flow characteristics depending on engine operating conditions were investigated. For in-cylinder spray behavior, increase in engine rpm did not alter the counter-clockwise air flow direction and location of in-cylinder dominant air flow but increased average air flow velocity, which hindered spray propagation parallel to the piston surface. When injection timing was retarded, direction of in-cylinder dominant air flow was changed, and average air flow velocity was reduced resulting in an increase in spray penetration length and change in direction. For spark channel stretching, increase in air flow speed did not affect spark channel stretch direction but affected length due to increase in spark channel resistance and limitation of energy ignition coil can handle. Change in air flow direction affected spark channel stretch direction where the air flow was obstructed by ground electrode which caused spark channel direction to occur in the opposing direction of air flow. It also affected spark channel stretch length due to change in air flow speed around the spark plug electrode from the interaction between the air flow and ground electrode.

  • Sound propagation in a sloping sea bed ocean environment demonstrates ray curvature in a direction parallel to the shoreline. The theoretical analysis of this shows that an ensonified region and a shadow region are formed, and their spatial extents depend on the spatial coordinates of source and receiver, a sloping angle and sourece frequency. The purpose of this experimental study using a sloping sea bed model is to check the theoretical prediction as a part of an ongoing investigation in the ocean environment. The sloping sea bed model used in this experiment had an ideal pressure-release boundaries and a sloping angle of $220.5{\circ}$ A single frequency signal and an impulsive signal were used as omnidirectional point sources. The spatial acoustic field characteristics in the across slope direction were measured using the former and the frequency dependent field characteristics in a specific point were obtained using the latter. It has been found that the analysis for the spatial extent of shadow zone and the frequency dependent field characteristics in the across slope direction, has a good agreement with the theoretical solution.

  • The speed and oscillation directions of elastic waves propagating in the [ab0] direction of a silicon single crystal were obtained by solving Christoffel's equation. It was found that the quasi waves propagate in the off-principal axis, and hence, the directions of the phase and group velocities are not the same. The maximum deviation of the two directions was $7.2^{\circ}$. Two modes of the pure transverse waves propagate in the [110] direction with different speeds, and hence, two peaks were observed in the pulse echo signal. The amplitude ratio of the two peaks was dependent on the initial oscillating direction of the incident wave. The pure and quasi-transverse waves propagate in the [210] direction, and the oscillation directions of these waves are perpendicular to each other. The skewing angle of the quasi wave was calculated as $7.14^{\circ}$, and it was measured as $9.76^{\circ}$. The amplitude decomposition in the [210] direction was similar to that in the [110] direction, since the oscillation directions of these waves are perpendicular to each other. These results offer useful information in measuring the crystal orientation of the silicon single crystal.
