  • Propagating speeds of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been calculated by several geometrical models based on multi-view observations (STEREO/SECCHI and SOHO/LASCO). But in 2015, we were unable to obtain radial velocity of a CME because the STEREO satellites were located near the backside of the sun. As an alternative to resolve this problem, we propose a method to combine a coronal shock front, which appears on the outermost of the CME, and an EUV-wave that occurs on the solar disk. According to recent studies, EUV-wave occurs as a footprint of the coronal shockwave on the lower solar atmosphere. In this study, the shock, observed as a bubble shape, is assumed as a perfect sphere. This assumption makes it possible to determine the height of a coronal shock, by matching the position of an EUV-wave on the solar disk and a coronal shock front in coronagraph. The radial velocity of Halo-CME is calculated from the rate of coronal shock position shift. For an event happened on 2011 February 15, the calculated speed in this method is a little slower than the real velocity but faster than the apparent one. And these results and the efficiency of this approach are discussed.

  • Generation mechanisms of the three moderate-or-greater (MOG)-level clear-air turbulence (CAT) encounters over South Korea are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The cases are selected among the MOG-level CAT events occurred in Korea during 2002-2008 that are categorized into three different generation mechanisms (upper-level front and jet stream, anticyclonic flow, and mountain waves) in the previous study by Min et al. For the case at 0127 UTC 18 Jun 2003, strong vertical wind shear (0.025 $s^{-1}$) generates shearing instabilities below the enhanced upper-level jet core of the maximum wind speed exceeding 50 m $s^{-1}$, and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT event over mid Korea. For the case at 2330 UTC 22 Nov 2006, areas of the inertia instability represented by the negative absolute vorticity are formed in the anticyclonically sheared side of the jet stream, and turbulence is activated near the observed CAT event over southwest of Korea. For the case at 0450 UTC 16 Feb 2003, vertically propagating mountain waves locally trigger shearing instability (Ri < 0.25) near the area where the background Richardson number is sufficiently small (0.25 < Ri < 1), and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT over the Eastern mountainous region of South Korea.

  • The three-dimensional structure of detonation wave propagating in a circular tube was investigated using a parallel computational code developed previously. A series of parametric study for a circular tube of a fixed diameter gave the formation mechanism of the detonation cell structures depending on pre-exponential factor, k. The unsteady results in three-dimension showed the mechanisms of two, three and four cell mode of detonation wave front structures. The detonation cell number was increased but cell width and length were decreased with increased pre-exponential factor k. In the all multi-cell mode, the detonation wave structure and smoked-foil records on the wall are made by the moving of transverse waves. The detonation wave front structures have the regular polygon and windmill shapes periodically.

  • This study is conducted to scrutinize agitation effects of an ultrasonic standing wave on the dynamic behavior of methane/air premixed flame. The propagating flame is caught by high-speed schlieren images, through which flame front and local flame velocity are analyzed and obtained, too. It is revealed that the propagation velocity with ultrasonic standing wave is larger than the case without excitation except around the flammability limits. Also, vertical locations of distortions and depth of dents of the front are constant, unless the ultrasonic standing wave characteristics are not changed.

  • The passage of the interplanetary discontinuity (i.e., sudden increases in the solar wind speed, density, and IMF strength) was detected by ACE near GSE (x, y, z) ~ (222, -36, 3) Re upstream of Earth around 22:48 UT on November 24, 2008. About 55 min later, this solar wind discontinuity was observed by Geotail near GSE (x, y, z) ~ (23, 18, -7) Re in front of Earth's bow shock. From the propagation time of the solar wind discontinuity between ACE and Geotail, it is expected that the discontinuity front is aligned with the Parker spiral and strikes the postnoon dayside magnetopause first. Using coordinated multi-point measurements (THEMIS and GOES) at or in geosynchronous orbit, we observed a tailward propagating sudden impulse (SI), excited by the interplanetary discontinuity, around 23:50 UT with its front retaining alignment similar to that of solar wind discontinuity. The SI event appears a negative-then-positive variation in the H component at high latitude Chokurdakh (CHD: MLAT ~ 64.7 deg) in the prenoon sector, which is opposite sense of normal SI event. During the positive deflection at CHD, the SuperDARN Hokkaido radar detected the downward motion of the ionosphere, implying westward electric field enhancement, at subauroral latitudes near CHD meridian. In our study we will discuss magnetospheric and ionospheric responses to the passage of the solar wind discontinuity using multi-point observations in space and on the ground.

  • Numerical studies were performed to investigate the three-dimensional front structure and dynamics features of detonation wave propagating in a circular tube such as Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE). By carrying out a series of parametric study using one step irreversible Arrhenius kinetics model, mechanisms of the three-dimensional front structure were investigated for two-, three-, four and six-cell mode detonations. A comparison with two-dimensional results, the effects of slapping transverse waves in radial direction were confirmed. In the all muti-cell modes, the detonation front structures and smoked-records on the wall are formed by the propagation of transverse waves along the wall in clockwise and counter-clockwise while the slapping move in radial direction. And the strength of reflected waves on the curved wall is changed by the multi-dimensional confinement effect.

  • From the dispersion relation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave propagating through plasmas, w$\^$2/ = w$\sub$p/$\^$2/+c$\^$2/k$\^$2/ the phase velocity (w/k) of the wave is large at high density where w$\sub$p/ is large, and small at low density Therefore, when a laser pulse is located on a downward density gradient of a plasma wave, the phase velocity of the back of the pulse becomes faster than that of the front of the pulse and the pulse wavelength decreases. • A light collecting probe named Multi-color Integrated Cassegrain Receiving Optics (MICRO) is applied to spark-ignited spherical spray flames to obtain the flame propagation speed in freely falling droplet suspension produced by an ultrasonic atomizer. Two MICRO probes are used to monitor time-series signals of OH chemiluminescence from two different locations in the flame. By detecting the arrival time difference of the propagating flame front, the flame propagation speed is calculated with a two-point delay-time method. In addition, time-series images of OH chemiluminescence are simultaneously obtained by a high-speed digital CCD camera to ensure the validity of the two-point delay-time method by the MICRO system. Furthermore, the relationship between the spray properties measured by phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) and the flame propagation speed are discussed with three different experimental conditions by changing the fuel injection rate. It was confirmed that the two-point delay-time method with two MICRO probes is useful and convenient to obtain the flame propagation speed and that the flame propagation speed depends on the spray properties.

  • The structure of premixed turbulent flames in a constant-volume vessel was investigated using a microprobe method. The flame potential signal having one to eight peaks was detected in the case of turbulent flames, each of them being regarded as a flamelet existing in the flame zone. Based on this consideration, the flame propagation speed, the thickness of the flame zone, the number of flamelets and the separation distance between adjacent flamelets in the flame zone were measured. The experimental resuits of this work suggest the existence of "reactant islands" behind the flame front when the turbulence was intensified to some extent. The critical(lowest) ratio of turbulence intensity to the laminar burning velocity being found to be about 0.7 for the formation of reactant islands in this experiment.
