  • For solving symmetric systems of linear equations, it is shown that a new Krylov subspace method can be obtained. The new approach is one of the projection methods, and we call it the projection method for convenience in this paper. The projection method maintains the residual vector like simpler GMRES, symmetric QMR, SYMMLQ, and MINRES. By studying the quasiminimal residual method, we show that an extended projection method and the scaled symmetric QMR method are equivalent.

  • First the notion of the A-monotonicity is applied to the approximation - solvability of a class of nonlinear variational inclusion problems, and then the convergence analysis is given based on a projection-like method. Results generalize nonlinear variational inclusions involving H-monotone mappings in the Hilbert space setting.

  • A roll projection welding machine is introduced to fabricate metallic sandwich plate consisting of a structured inner sheet with projection-like shape and a pair of skin sheets. To fabricate the metallic sandwich plate of consistent and good quality, two process monitoring methods are introduced; dynamic resistance monitoring and skin sheet temperature monitoring. Dynamic resistance monitoring has no time delay but gives only averaged value over plate width. Skin sheet temperature monitoring has certain amount of time delay but is good for predicting weld quality of specified position. By the two complementary monitoring methods, the characteristics of the new welding process is successfully understood.

  • Accurate household projections are essential for sectors such as housing supply and tax policy planning, given the rapid social changes like declining birthrates, an aging population, and a rise in single-person households that impact household size and type. Korea introduced its first register-based census in 2015, transitioning from five-year general survey-based approach to an annual administrative data-based census. This change in census allows for more frequent and effective capturing the rapid demographic shifts and trends. However, this change in census has caused challenges in future projection by the existing household projection model due to the rapid dynamics. This paper proposes a new household projection method, the N-point Modified Exponential Model (MEM), that accurately reflects register-based census data and mitigates the impact of rapid demographic changes, in three types: the Weighted N-point MEM, the Regression-based N-point MEM, and the Rolling Weighted N+point MEM. Using register-based census data from 2016 to 2020 to forecast household headship rates by age, household size, and household type to 2051, the N-point modified exponential model outperformed the existing model in both long- and short-term forecast accuracy, suggesting its suitability as a future household projection model for Korea.

  • Cylinder-like crystals of $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$ provide views parallel to the lamellar plane, from which parameters of lamellar stacking can be directly measured. These parameters were measured using different preparation methods. Assuming that molecular packing is the same, data from lamellar plane could supplement those obtained by tilting large, thin plate-like crystals. However, base on data obtained .by electron microscopy and x-ray powder patterns, the plate-like crystal may have another scheme for stacking the lamellar. The projection map (h, 0, 1) from cylinder-like crystals using cryoelectron microscopy suggest the lamellar spacing can be variable.

  • Objective: To identify the association between renal tumor complexity and pathologic renal sinus invasion (RSI) and evaluate the usefulness of computed tomography tumor features for predicting RSI in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 276 consecutive patients who underwent radical nephrectomy for RCC with a size of ≤ 7 cm between January 2014 and October 2017. Tumor complexity and anatomical renal sinus involvement were evaluated using two standardized scoring systems: the radius (R), exophytic or endophytic (E), nearness to collecting system or sinus (N), anterior or posterior (A), and location relative to polar lines (RENAL) nephrometry and preoperative aspects and dimensions used for anatomical classification (PADUA) system. CT-based tumor features, including shape, enhancement pattern, margin at the interface of the renal sinus (smooth vs. non-smooth), and finger-like projection of the mass, were also assessed by two independent radiologists. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify significant predictors of RSI. The positive predictive value, negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy of anatomical renal sinus involvement, and tumor features were evaluated. Results: Eighty-one of 276 patients (29.3%) demonstrated RSI. Among highly complex tumors (RENAL or PADUA score ≥ 10), the frequencies of RSI were 42.4% (39/92) and 38.0% (71/187) using RENAL and PADUA scores, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that a non-smooth margin and the presence of a finger-like projection were significant predictors of RSI. Anatomical renal sinus involvement showed high NPVs (91.7% and 95.2%) but low accuracy (40.2% and 43.1%) for RSI, whereas the presence of a non-smooth margin or finger-like projection demonstrated comparably high NPVs (90.0% and 91.3% for both readers) and improved accuracy (67.0% and 73.9%, respectively). Conclusion: A non-smooth margin or the presence of a finger-like projection can be used as a preoperative CT-based tumor feature for predicting RSI in patients with RCC.

  • The famous Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis has been used for a long time as a sufficient condition for the convergence of Newton method to a solution of an equation in connection with the Lipschitz continuity of the Frechet-derivative of the operator involved. Using Lipschitz and center-Lipschitz conditions we show that the Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis is weakened. The error bounds obtained under our semilocal convergence result are finer and the information on the location of the solution more precise than the corresponding ones given by the dominating Newton-Kantorovich theorem, and under the same hypotheses/computational cost, since the evaluation of the Lipschitz also requires the evaluation of the center-Lipschitz constant. In the case of local convergence we obtain a larger convergence radius than before. This observation is important in computational mathematics and can be used in connection to projection methods and in the construction of optimum mesh independence refinement strategies.

  • A plethora of applications from mathematical programmings, such as minimax, mathematical programming, penalization and fixed point problems can be framed as variational inequality problems. Most of the methods that used to solve such problems involve iterative methods, that is why, in this paper, we introduce a new extragradient-like method to solve pseudomonotone variational inequalities in a real Hilbert space. The proposed method has the advantage of a variable step size rule that is updated for each iteration based on previous iterations. The main advantage of this method is that it operates without the previous knowledge of the Lipschitz constants of an operator. A strong convergence theorem for the proposed method is proved by letting the mild conditions on an operator 𝒢. Numerical experiments have been studied in order to validate the numerical performance of the proposed method and to compare it with existing methods.

  • Objective: To describe the anatomic locations and imaging features of posterior lung herniation in unilateral pulmonary agenesis and aplasia, focusing on radiograph-CT/MRI correlation. Materials and Methods: A total of 10 patients (seven with pulmonary agenesis and three with pulmonary aplasia, male: female = 1:9, mean age 7.3 years, age range from 1 month to 20 years) were included. Chest radiographs (n = 9), CT (n = 9), and MRI (n = 1) were reviewed to assess the type of lung underdevelopment, presence of anterior and posterior lung herniation, bronchus origin, supplying artery, and draining vein of the herniated lung. Results: Pulmonary agenesis/aplasia more commonly affected the left lung (n = 7) than the right lung (n = 3). Anterior lung herniation was observed in nine of the 10 patients. Posterior lung herniation was observed in seven patients with left pulmonary agenesis/aplasia. Two patients showed posterior lung herniation crossing the midline but not beyond the aorta, and five patients showed the posteriorly herniated right lower lobe crossing the midline to extend into the left hemithorax farther beyond the descending thoracic aorta through the space between the esophagus and the aorta. This anatomical configuration resulted in a characteristic radiographic finding of a radiolucent area with a convex lateral border and a vertical medial border in the left lower lung zone, revealing a tongue-like projection on CT and MRI. Conclusion: Posterior lung herniation occurs in unilateral left lung agenesis/aplasia. Approximately 70% of the cases of posterior lung herniation reveal a unique radiolucent tongue-like projection in the left lower lung zone on imaging studies, which is caused by the extension of the posteriorly herniated right lung farther beyond the descending aorta.

  • In aerospace and energy engineering, the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) temperature distributions is crucial. Traditional methods like algebraic iterative reconstruction and filtered back-projection depend on voxel division for resolution. Our algorithm, blending deep learning with computer graphics rendering, converts 2D projections into light rays for uniform sampling, using a fully connected neural network to depict the 3D temperature field. Although effective in capturing internal details, it demands multiple cameras for varied angle projections, increasing cost and computational needs. We assess the impact of camera number on reconstruction accuracy and efficiency, conducting butane-flame simulations with different camera setups (6 to 18 cameras). The results show improved accuracy with more cameras, with 12 cameras achieving optimal computational efficiency (1.263) and low error rates. Verification experiments with 9, 12, and 15 cameras, using thermocouples, confirm that the 12-camera setup as the best, balancing efficiency and accuracy. This offers a feasible, cost-effective solution for real-world applications like engine testing and environmental monitoring, improving accuracy and resource management in temperature measurement.
