A Study on the STEAM Program Development of Zero Energy House Design for Middle School Students (중학생을 위한 제로에너지 주택디자인 STEAM 교육프로그램 개발 연구)

  • STEAM education is an effective teaching method to develop self-problem-solving skills through creative thinking. In order to revitalize STEAM education, various program models are being developed recently. The purpose of this study is to develop a STEAM education program based on the project-based learing method that includes the process of solving global environmental problems. The STEAM element was extracted by linking the zero energy house design with the middle school curriculum, and the STEAM education program was developed considering career activities. It was analyzed whether the developed program can improve STEAM core competence and job preparation ability. The education program was conducted for middle school students and the program was evaluated through questionnaires. In order to strengthen the STEAM competency, project-based learning method was applied and it was able to enhance the active problem solving ability of learners. In addition, opportunities for career experience could be provided through career exploration programs and various activities. Through this STEAM education program, it is expected to contribute to cultivating human resources with convergence knowledge and core competency.

  • This paper deals with a 'Designeer' education program that has a specific objective of educating design to undergraduate students in mechanical engineering with the aim of enhancing their ability of collaboration with designers when they are going to work in the field after graduation. The entire curriculum of the Designeer education program is introduced first, the end of which two-semester Capstone Design Courses for senior students is offered to let them practice all the knowledge and skills in a project-based learning environment. Learning specific matters such as sketching & visual thinking, prototyping and user experience design is one thing and practicing those knowledge and skills into a Capstone Design project is another. At this point, design thinking process needs to be in place to give students a foresight of one-year journey and to ensure that they will produce a desirable, feasible and viable product at the end of the year when they define the right problem at the beginning. Their frustrations and discoveries while applying design thinking throughout the year is explained by taking an example of a Robot Vacuum Cleaner design project. Finally, we provide real examples of effective methods to practice divergent and convergent phases.

An Evaluation Study for APEC International Cooperation Projects : Focusing on the Perception of Participants (APEC 국제교육협력사업에 대한 성과평가 연구: 국제교육활동 참여자들의 인식을 중심으로)

  • This study conducted the international evaluation of the APEC educational cooperation projects initiated by the Korean government and drew out strategies and tasks for their sustainable implementation. To this end, eight projects implemented by the Institute of APEC Collaborative Education were selected for the evaluation which examined participants' awareness of and the degree of participation in the eight projects as well as contribution to the intended outcomes of the projects. An online survey was conducted to participants of the eight projects and 283 experts and participants from 18 economies responded. The descriptive analysis found that the participants of ALCoB Cooperation Project reported the most positive perception of the awareness while the participants of the ALCoB Internet Volunteers showed the lowest degree of participation in and contribution to the intended outcomes of the project. Based on the results, several suggestions for further progress in Korea's APEC educational cooperation were made.

Capstone Design Projects based on Invention Education

  • This paper deals with the introduction of capstone design projects based on invention education in Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Korea Maritime University. This course is referred to as Creative Engineering Design for spring semester of 4th-year undergraduates. The course focuses on creative thinking and cooperative mind to students by learning engineering design skills, realizing their idea through design project and recognizing practicality of their systems. To improve creative thinking of students, intellectual property (IP) education is very helpful. If engineering students take training program in IP, it will be very beneficial for CEOs to manage intellectual capital in many industries and to ensure competition power in their business. This study suggested that students take interest in connecting their ideas with inventions through invention education reinforcing an invention and a patent exercise. It is expected that this study may help to develop new curriculum of capstone design project including IP education in many universities.

Analyzing the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) education program based on design thinking process (디자인씽킹 프로세스 기반의 인공지능(AI) 교육 프로그램 적용 효과분석)

  • At the beginning of the discussion of AI education in K-12 education, the study was conducted to develop and apply an AI education program based on Design Thinking and analyze the effects of the AI education programs. In the AI education program, students explored and defined the AI problems they were interested in, gathered the necessary data to build an AI model, and then developed a project using scratch. In order to analyze the effectiveness of the AI education program, the change of learner's perception of the value of AI and the change of AI efficacy were analyzed. The overall perception of the AI project was also analyzed. As a result, AI efficacy was significantly increased through the experience of carrying out the project according to the Design Thinking process. In addition, the efficacy of solving problems with AI was influenced by the level of use of programming languages. The learner's overall perception of the AI project was positive, and the perceptions of each stage of the AI project (AI problem understanding and problem exploration, practice, problem definition, problem solving idea implementation, evaluation and presentation) was also positive. This positive perception was higher among students with high level of programming language use. Based on these results, the implications for AI education were suggested.

The Effects of Multicultural Education Based on 'World Cultures' Project Activities on Young Children's Multicultural Acceptability and Caring Thinking (세계 여러나라 프로젝트 활동이 유아의 다문화 수용성과 배려적 사고에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of multicultural education based on 'World Cultures' project activities on young children's multicultural acceptability and caring thinking. This study's research questions are: 1) How do 'World Cultures' project activities affect young children's multicultural acceptability?; 2) How do 'World Cultures' project activities affect young children's caring thinking? The participants were thirty-five five year olds in a day care center in Y city, Gyounggi-do and were divided into two groups. The experimental group participated in a 'World Cultures' project, whereas the control group performed activities of 'Fall' and 'World Cultures' themes of Nuri Curriculum. The measurement of multicultural acceptability was developed by Kim and Jung (2010) for elementary school students, and revised and supplemented for young children by Bak (2013). The instrument of caring thinking originated with Lipman (2003) and was translated and modified by Lee (2007). Data was analyzed using the SPSS Win 18.0, and t-tests were performed to compare the means of the two groups. Results of this study are: first, there were statistical differences in multicultural openness and multicultural relationship skills between the groups. The experimental group scores were higher than those of the control group. However, there were no significant differences in multicultural awareness and multicultural empathy. Second, there was a statistically significant difference in care thinking between the experimental group and the control group. The score for the experimental group was higher than the score for the comparative group. This result verified that "World Cultures" project activities show a positive impact on multicultural acceptability-the proper understanding and acceptance of foreign cultures. In addition, the project activities have a positive impact on caring thinking, which was related, not only to understanding and accepting other races, but also to respecting and understanding others' emotions.

A study on the history of project approach and its application for improving mathematical problem solving skill (수학문제해결력 증진을 위한 프로젝트 활용의 역사와 그 적용의 분석)

  • Problem sovling skill is one of the core skills in mathematics education. To improve students' problem solving skill, the project approach or project based learning has been developed and applied. A teaching and learning strategy utilizing 'project' encourages students to understand the problem embedded in the project, find and reflect the solution, which might be effective in improving students' problem solving skill. The present study systematically reviews literature regarding project based learning and analyzes the characteristics of project. The findings from the systematic review illuminate an appropriate approach to apply project based learning in mathematics classrooms.

Strategy and Effect on Interdisciplinary Project-based Learning based Blended Learning (블랜디드 학습에 기반한 통합교과 프로젝트 학습 전략 및 효과)

  • Although the e-learning system is being introduced in elementary and secondary education, incorporating it into the regular curriculum is difficult. Other problems include the lack of sessions and connection to regular courses in realistically applying project-based learning in the regular school curriculum. Therefore. this study established, applied, and analyzed the blended learning strategy to resolve such issues. Specifically, a theoretical investigation on the concept of blended learning and IT-oriented, project-based learning was conducted. The theme for learning based on integrated courses was also selected, and the 5-stage project-based teaching and learning strategy, concretized. The concretization strategy involved discussion, role division, and alternative evaluation strategy. The class progressed in formats of on-class online, on-class offline and off-class online. As a result, students experienced inconvenience since the project only lasted for a short period of time. Nonetheless, they responded positively to the effect of project-based learning in general. This study was able to suggest the possibility of applying e learning in regular school curriculum and propose the direction for digital and learner oriented teaching.

Developing English Communicative Ability for Science Gifted Students through Project-based Learning of Publishing English Newspapers (프로젝트 기반 학습의 영자 신문 발간을 통한 과학 영재 학생의 영어 의사소통능력 향상)

  • This study aims to assure the positive influence of publishing English newspapers on improving English communicative ability and explores possibilities of enforcing an explicitly collaborative and independent learning atmosphere through a cooperative project-based publishing process. The project of publishing first KSA English newspapers has completed with a series of processes adopted from project-based learning and teaching strategies. The project involves the initiative process of selecting student editors based on their English abilities and commitment levels followed by planning subjects, themes and materials, distributing tasks and articles, and integrating and editing the outcome. Throughout the whole process volunteers participated independently and collaboratively with minimum supervision. The survey shows that the successfully published English Newspaper resulted in facilitating volunteers' positive self awareness and independent learning attitude as well as improving general English ability. The study discusses possibilities and advantages of publishing newspapers and magazines not for limited language education only, but for integrated project-based learning and teaching with suggestions for further related studies.

Effect on Mathematical Inclination of Elementary School Students Using the Description Style Assessment (서술형 평가가 초등학생의 수학적 성향에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • This study was proposed to analyze mathematical communication activity and mathematical attitudes while students were solving project problem and to consider how the conclusions effects mathematics education. This study analyzed through qualitative research method. The questions for this study are following, First, how does the process of the mathematical communication activity proceed during solving project problem in a small group? Second, what reactions can be shown on mathematical attitudes during solving project problem in a small group? Four project problems sampled from pilot study in order to examine these questions were applied on two small groups consisting of four 5th grade students. It was recorded while each group was finding out the solution of the given problems. Afterward, consequences were analyzed according to each question after all contents were noted. Consequently, conclusions can be derived as follows. First, it was shown that each student used different elements of contents in mathematical communication activity. Second, during mathematical communication activity, most students preferred common languages to mathematical ones. Third, it was found that each student has their own mathematical attitude. Fourth, Students were more interested in the game project problem and the practical using project problem than others.
