  • Progressive building collapse occurs when failure of a structural component leads to the failure and collapse of surrounding members, possibly promoting additional failure. Global system collapse will occur if the damaged system is unable to reach a new static equilibrium configuration. The most common type of primary failure which led to the progressive collapse phenomenon, is the sudden removal of a column by various factors. In this study, a method is proposed to prevent progressive collapse phenomena in structures subjected to removal of a single column. A vierendeel peripheral frame at roof level is used to redistribute the removed column's load on other columns of the structure. For analysis, quasi-static approach is used which considers various load combinations. This method, while economically affordable is easily applicable (also for new structures as well as for existing structures and without causing damage to their architectural requirements). Special emphasis is focused on the evolution of vertical displacements of column removal point. Even though additional stresses and displacements are experienced by removal of a structural load bearing column, the proposed method considerably reduces the displacement at the mentioned point and prevents the collapse of the structural frame.

  • In this paper, composite laminate pull-through resistance was analyzed using the FEM method and compared with test results. 2D and 3D simplified FEM models, a nonlinear analysis, and a progressive failure analysis utilizing three composite laminate failure theories Maximum Stress, Maximum Strain, and Tsai-Wu were used to predict the FEM results with the test results. The load and boundary conditions of the test were applied to the FEM to simulate the test. A composite laminate pull-through test (ASTM D7332 Proc. B) was designed with a special fixture to collect more precise data. The test results were compared with the FEM analysis results.

  • Widespread propagation of failure can be triggered by localized damage to a structure because of fires, impact and explosion etc. In this paper, the progressive collapse analysis program is developed to automatically check the failed members and construct the modified structural model at each step. OpenSees, that is widely used in many research groups, was used for the developed progressive collapse analysis control program. The control program developed in this study automatically computes the damage indices of all the structural members and performance a progressive collapse analysis after the first failed member is selected. Using the developed program, we compared the progressive collapse behaviors of the example structures considering dynamic effects or not, and the difference of progressive collapse mechanism according to the modeling method of the failed members.

  • A progressive failure analysis procedure for composite laminates is developed in here and in the companion paper. An anisotropic plastic constitutive model for fiber-reinforced composite material, is developed, which is simple and efficient to be implemented into computer program for a predictive analysis procedure of composites. In current development of the constitutive model, an incremental elastic-plastic constitutive model is adopted to represent progressively the nonlinear material behavior of composite materials until a material failure is predicted. An anisotropic initial yield criterion is established that includes the effects of different yield strengths in each material direction, and between tension and compression. Anisotropic work-hardening model and subsequent yield surface are developed to describe material behavior beyond the initial yield under the general loading condition. The current model is implemented into a computer code, which is Predictive Analysis for Composite Structures (PACS), and is presented in the companion paper. The accuracy and efficiency of the anisotropic plastic constitutive model are verified by solving a number of various fiber-reinforced composite laminates with and without geometric discontinuity. The comparisons of the numerical results to the experimental and other numerical results available in the literature indicate the validity and efficiency of the developed model.

  • This paper deal with the stability evaluation and suggestion of progressive failure slope in biotite granite area of Andong. Based on geological site investigation and field test, stability analysis of slope was performed in conjunction with limit equilibrium methods and stereographic projection. Additionally, initial design and construction procedure was critically evaluated. Series of the slope stability analysis reveals the detection of local wedge and plane failure under the current slope condition. It is additionally appeared that a certain synthetic behavior of circle and plane failure exists on the right spot where the overall failure's going in progress. In order to construct more stable slope based on the suitability for the real state of the slope circumstances, this study issues a solution to eliminate the primary factors which cause the instability, by means of the grade of weathering and RMR classification of rock mass.

  • According to the definition, progressive collapse could occur due to the initial partial failure of the structural members which by spreading to the adjacent members, could result in partial or overall collapse of the structure. Up to now, most researchers have investigated the progressive collapse due to explosion, fire or impact loads. But new research has shown that the seismic load could also be a factor for initiation of the progressive collapse. In this research, the progressive collapse capacity for the 5 and 15-story steel special moment resisting frames using push-down nonlinear static analysis, and nonlinear dynamic analysis under the gravity loads specified in the GSA Guidelines, were studied. After identifying the critical members, in order to investigate the seismic progressive collapse, the 5-story steel special moment resisting frame was analyzed by the nonlinear time history analysis under the effect of earthquakes with different characteristics. In order to account for the initial damage, one of the critical columns was weakened at the initiation of the earthquake or its Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). The results of progressive collapse analyses showed that the potential of progressive collapse is considerably dependent upon location of the removed column and the number of stories, also the results of seismic progressive collapse showed that the dynamic response of column removal under the seismic load is completely dependent on earthquake characteristics like Arias intensity, PGA and earthquake frequency contents.

  • In the past, the progressive collapse resulting from local failures during accidents has caused many tragedies and loss of life. Although long-span spatial grid structures are characterised by a high degree of static indeterminacy, the sudden failure of key members may lead to a catastrophic progressive collapse. For this reason, it is especially necessary to research the progressive collapse resistance capacity of long-span spatial grid structures. This paper presents an evaluation method of important members and a novel dynamic analysis method for simulating the progressive collapse of long-span spatial grid structures. Engineering cases were analysed to validate these proposed method. These proposed methods were eventually implemented in the progressive collapse analysis of the main stadium for the Universiade Sports Center. The roof of the structure was concluded to have good resistance against progressive collapse. The novel methods provide results close to practice and are especially suitable for the progressive collapse analysis of long-span spatial grid structures.

  • A design optimization is performed for the double-bolted joint in cylindrical composite structures by using a simplified analytical method. This method uses failure criteria for the major failure modes of the bolted composite joint. For the double-bolted joint with a zigzag arrangement, it is necessary to consider an interaction effect between the bolt arrays. This paper proposes another failure mode which is determined by angle and distance between two bolts in different arrays and define a failure criterion for the failure mode. The optimal design for the double-bolted joint is carried out by considering the interactive net-tension failure mode. The genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to determine the optimized parameters; bolt spacing, edge distance, and stacking sequence of the composite laminate. A purpose of the design optimization is to maximize the burst pressure of the cylindrical structures by ensuring structural integrity. Also, a progressive failure analysis (PFA) is performed to verify the results of the optimal design for the double-bolted joint. In PFA, Hashin 3D failure criterion is used to determine the ply that would fail. A stiffness reduction model is then used to reduce the stiffness of the failed ply for the corresponding failure mode.
