  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP)/poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) ternary blends were prepared by melt blending, and were melt-spun to fibers at various spinning speeds in an effort to improve fiber performance and processability. Structure and property relationship of TLCP/PEN/PET ternary blend fibers and effects of annealing on those were investigated. The mechanical properties of ternary blend fibers could be significantly improved by annealing, which were attributed to the development of more ordered crystallites and the formation of more perfect crystalline structures. TLCP/PEN/PET ternary blend fibers that annealed at 18$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, exhibited the highest values of tensile strength and modulus. The double melting behaviors observed in the annealed ternary blend fibers depended on annealing temperature and time, which might be caused by different lamellae thickness distribution as a result of the melting-reorganization process during the DSC scans.

  • In recent years, Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have become a center of special interest in the automotive industry. Due to their high specific mechanical properties, they offer a significant weight saving potential in modem vehicle constructions. Most Mg alloys show very good machinability and processability, and even the most complicated die casting parts can be easily produced. The die casting process is a fast production method capable of a high degree of automation for which certain Mg alloys are ideally suited. Although Mg alloys are fulfilling the demands for low specific weight materials with excellent machining and casting abilities, they are still not used in die casting process to the same extent as the competing material aluminium. One of the reasons is that effects of various forming variables for die casting process is not closely examined from the viewpoint of die design. In this study, step die and flowability tests for AM60 were performed by die casting process according to various combination of casting pressure and plunger velocity. Microstructure and Victors hardness tests were examined and performed for each specimen to verify effects of forming conditions.

  • Aluminum is a lightweight metal and has excellent properties with regard to conductivity, workability, and strength. It has been used in various industries owing to its economic benefits. To improve upon the mechanical properties and processability by adding various alloying elements to aluminum, improving the corrosion resistance and heat resistance by electrochemically forming a porous anodic film having a thickness and hardness on the surface of the aluminum alloy is crucial. In this study, the aluminum 6061 alloy was controlled by an anodization process in a 0.3M oxalic acid electrolyte at room temperature to investigate the oxide film parameters such as porosity and thickness depending on the modulating applied voltage and time. The anodizing experiment was performed by increasing the time from 1 h to 9 h at 2-h intervals at applied voltages of 50 V and 60 V.

  • In the semiconductor and display component industries, the use of ceramic materials, which are high-strength materials, is increasing for ensuring durability and wear resistance. Among them, alumina materials are used increasingly. Alumina materials are extremely difficult to process because of their high strength; as such, research and development in the area of mineral material processing is being promoted actively to improve their processing. In this study, the processability of an electrodeposition tool is investigated using the electrodeposition method to smoothly process alumina materials. Furthermore, processing is conducted under various processing conditions, such as spindle speed, feed speed, and depth of cut. In addition, the processing characteristics of the workpiece are analyzed based on the tooling.

  • Currently, photodetectors are being extensively studied and developed for next-generation applications, such as in autonomous vehicles and image sensors. In this regard, all-inorganic metal halide perovskite (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br, and I) nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as promising building blocks for various applications owing to their high absorption coefficients, tunable bandgaps, high defect tolerances, and solution processability. These features, which are typically required for the development of advanced optoelectronics, can be engineered by modifying the chemical compositions and surface chemistry of the NCs. Herein, we briefly review various strategies adopted for the application of CsPbX3 perovskite NCs in photodetectors and for improving device performance. First, modifications of the chemical compositions of CsPbX3 NCs to tune their optical bandgaps and improve the charge-transport mechanism are discussed. Second, the application of surface chemistry to improve oxidation resistance and carrier mobility is described. In the future, perovskite NCs with prospective features, such as non-toxicity and high resistance to external stimuli, are expected to be developed for practical applications.

  • Using non-biodegradable polymers is a severe environmental problem as they are not recyclable and generate a large amount of waste. Biopolymers, such as starch-based composites, have been considered one of the most promising replacement materials. These eco-friendly materials have the advantage of being low-cost, biodegradable, and obtained from renewable sources. However, as starch tends to be brittle and hydrophilic, it can make these materials unusable when exposed to water and limit its processability for further applications. In this work, a biobased modified starch was grafted using two bioderived materials, lauryl methacrylate (LMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA), by radical polymerization. A polylactic acid (PLA) composite based on the modified starch (m-St) was fabricated to enhance its toughness. These samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy. The starch was successfully grafted, thus improving the compatibility with the PLA matrix. The mechanical properties of these films were also studied. Results from mechanical tests showed a slight enhancement of the mechanical performance of these composites when m-St was added to the PLA matrix. Such behavior is related to the improved dispersion of m-St 1:2 on PLA, confirmed by SEM images showing enhanced compatibility between modified starch and PLA matrix. This indicated excellent properties of the produced composite film for further eco-friendly applications.

  • In this study, we prepared glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites using Brabender twin-screw extruder. Compatibilizer, polypropylene-based maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH), was used to increase the molecular interaction between polypropylene matrix and glass fiber and to enhance melt processability. We also measured the shear and uniaxial elongational behaviors of glass-fiber reinforced composites in the absence or presence of compatibilizer. The effects of compatibilizer and fiber loading on the viscoelastic behaviors were examined. It was fuund that the PP-g-MAH compatibilizer improved the fluidity and increased the molecular bonding of composite melts in shear flow. Transient elongational viscosity was increased with fiber loadings in uniaxial elongational flow However, it was decreased with increasing elongational rates because of microscale shear flow between fibers.

  • Graphene oxide (GO) has been considered as a promising membrane material, because of its easy processability and distinct properties, including controllable pore size distribution and diffusion channels. Particularly, the feasibility has been proposed a number of simulation results and proof-of-concept experimental approaches towards GO membranes. That is, GO already shows many outstanding intrinsic properties suitable for promising membrane platforms, such as the minimum membrane thickness and the ability to generate nanopores in the two-dimensional lattices or to create slit-like nanochannels between adjacent sheets. This review will be addressed the important experimental development in GO-based membranes for gas and ion separations, emphasizing on intrinsic transport phenomena, and critical issues for practical applications.

  • Soy protein isolate (SPI) has garnered researchers' attention due to its abundance, costeffectiveness, excellent biocompatibility, hemo-compatibility, and biodegradability. However, SPI faces limitations in application due to poor processability and weak mechanical strength. Substantial efforts have been made to address these challenges. In this preliminary study, glycerol and biofibers were added to SPI to improve the mechanical properties and film forming, and glyoxal was employed to crosslink SPI molecules. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting SPI/composite films were evaluated. A 15% addition of glycerol proved sufficient for good film formation. Among the biofibers, short SF microfibers were the most effective in enhancing breaking strength, while TEMPO-oxidized CNF (cellulose nanofiber) excelled among CNFs. Crosslinking with glyoxal significantly enhanced the mechanical properties, with the type of biofiber minimally affecting the mechanical properties of the crosslinked SPI composite films.
