Aerodynamic force coefficients are generally prescribed by an ensemble average of ten and/or twenty 10-minute samples. However, this makes it difficult to identify the exact probability distribution and exceedance probability of the prescribed values. In this study, 12,600 10-minute samples on three tall buildings were measured, and the probability distributions were first identified and the aerodynamic force coefficients corresponding to the specific non-exceedance probabilities (cumulative probabilities) of wind load were then evaluated. It was found that the probability distributions of the mean and fluctuating aerodynamic force coefficients followed a normal distribution. The ratios of aerodynamic force coefficients corresponding to the specific non-exceedance probabilities (Cf,Non) to the ensemble average of 12,600 samples (Cf,Ens), which was defined as an adjusting factor (Cf,Non/Cf,Ens), were less than 2%. The effect of coefficient of variation of wind speed on the adjusting factor is larger than that of the annual non-exceedance probability of wind load. The non-exceedance probabilities of the aerodynamic force coefficient is between PC,nonex = 50% and 60% regardless of force components and aspect ratios. The adjusting factors from the Gumbel distribution were larger than those from the normal distribution.
In this paper, we propose a new adaptative pruning algorithm which effectively reduces the search space during the recognition process. As maximum probabilities between neighbor frames are highly interrelated, an efficient pruning threshold value can be obtained from the maximum probabilities of previous frames. The main idea is to update threshold at the present frame by a combination of previous maximum probability and hypotheses probabilities. As present threshold is obtained in on-going recognition process, the algorithm does not need any pre-experiments to find threshold values even when recognition tasks are changed. In addition, the adaptively selected threshold allows an improvement of recognition speed under different environments. The proposed algorithm has been applied to a Korean Address recognition system. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the search space of average 14.4% and 9.14% respectively while preserving the recognition accuracy, compared to the previous method of using fixed pruning threshold values and variable pruning threshold values.
Supppose ${X_n}$ is a Markov process taking values in some arbitrary state space $(S, F)$ with temporarily homogeneous transition probabilities $p^n(x, A) = P(X_n \in $A\mid$X_0 = x), x \in S, A \in F$. Write $p(x, A) for p^1(x, A)$.
The theory of signal detection has been applied to a wide range of practical situation for a long time, including sonar detection, air traffic control and so on. In general, in this theory, sensitivity parametric index d' and bias parametric index $\beta$ are used to evaluated the performance of vigilance. These indices use observer's response "hit" and "false alarm" to explain and evaluate vigilance, but not considering reaction time. However, the reaction time of detecting should be considered in measuring vigilance in some supervisory tasks such as unlimited monitoring tasks (e.g., supervisors in nuclear plant). There are some researchers have used the segments of reaction time to generate a pair of probabilities of hit and false alarm probabilities and plot the receiver operating characteristic curve. The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative vigilance-measuring model by fuzzy sets, which combined the concepts of hit, false alarm and reaction time. The model extends two-values logic to multi-values logic by membership functions of fuzzy sets. A simulated experiment of monitoring task in nuclear plant was carried out. Results indicated that the new vigilance-measuring model is more efficient than traditional indices; the characteristics of vigilance would be realized more clearly in unlimited monitoring task.

To find the tooth selectivity of the dredge for catching the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii, the probabilities of the ark shells which are not sifting through the gaps between teeth were calculated for the various shell lengths. Considering that these probabilities are in proportion to the relative catching efficiencies, selectivity curves for the ark shell dredge were estimated for the various gaps between teeth. The ratio of the shell length of ark shell to the distance between teeth indicating the relative catching efficiencies of 0%, 50%, 100% respectively, were calculated by using these selectivity curves, and the values were 1.00, 1.32, 1.54 in the distance of 4.0cm between teeth and then, the ratios showed a slight tendency to decrease as the distance between teeth increased in the relative catching efficiency of 100%, In addition, the range of shell length for catching, that is, the range of selective shell length by the distance between teeth was 0.54 in the distance of 4.0cm between teeth.

The paper persents an efficient method of extracting line segment in a grid map. The grid map is composed of 2-D grids that have both the occupancy and orientation probabilities based on the simplified Bayesian updating model. The probabilities and orientations of cells in the grid map are continuously updated while the robot explorers to their values. The line segments are, then, extracted from the clusters using Hough transform methods. The eng points of a line segment are evaluated from the cells in each cluster, which is simple and efficient comparing to existing methods. The proposed methods are illustrated by sets of experiments in an indoor environment.
A probabilistic-Fuzzy model for seismic hazard analysis is developed. The proposed model is able to reproduce both the randomness and the imprecision in conjunction with earthquake occurrences. Results-of this research are (a) membership functions of both peak ground accelerations associated with a given probability of exceedance and probabilities of exceedance associated with a given peak ground acceleration, and (b) characteristic values of membership functions at each location of interest. The proposed probabilistic-fuzzy model for assessment of seismic hazard is successfully applied to the Wasatch Front Range in Utah in order to obtain the seismic maps for different annual probabilities of exceedance, different peak ground accelerations, and different time periods.
A practical method of adaptive rate allocation to source and channel codings for an independent loss channel is proposed for Internet video. It is based on the observations that the values of residual loss probabilities at the optimal code rates for different packet loss probabilities are closely clustered to the average residual loss probability for a transmission frame size n in RS(n,k) code and for a total bit rate R. These observations aye then exploited to find the code rate for maximum PSNR. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a near-optimal bit-rate allocation in the joint source-channel coding of H.263 and RS(n,k) codings.
In conventional fault-tree analysis, the failure probabilities of components of a system are treated as exact values in estimating the failure probability of the top event. For the plant layout and systems of the products, however, it is often difficult to evaluate the failure probabilities of components from past occurences, because the environments of the systems change. Furthermore, it might be necessary to consider possible failure of components of the systems even if they have never failed before. In the paper, instead of the probability of failure, we propose the possibility of failure, viz, a fuzzy set defined in probability space. Thus, in this paper based on a fuzzy fault-tree model, the maximum possibility of system failure is determined from the possibility of failure of each component within the system according to the extension principle.

Imputation procedures fill-in missing values, thereby enabling complete data analyses. Fully efficient fractional imputation (FEFI) and multiple imputation (MI) create multiple versions of the missing observations, thereby reflecting uncertainty about their true values. Methods have been described for hypothesis testing with multiple imputation. Fractional imputation assigns weights to the observed data to compensate for missing values. The focus of this article is the development of tests of independence using FEFI for partially classified two-way contingency tables. Wald and deviance tests of independence under FEFI are proposed. Simulations are used to compare type I error rates and Power. The partially observed marginal information is useful for estimating the joint distribution of cell probabilities, but it is not useful for testing association. FEFI compares favorably to other methods in simulations.
