  • The present study investigated the effectiveness of pretreatment on dentin bonding. The adhesive resin was 5% 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) in methyl methacrylate (MMA) combined with poly-MMA powder. Polymerization of this resin was initiated by tri-n-butyl borage (TBB). Ground bovine dentin samples were etched with either an aqueous solution of 10% citric (10-0 solution) (Group I) or aqueous solution of 10% citric acid and 3% ferric chloride(10-3 solution) (Group ll ). After etching, the primer (an aqueous solution of 35% hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEM- A) and 5% glutaraldehyde was applied on the differently etched surfaces (Group III , Group IV). The 10-0 treatment showed the lowest tensile bond strength, followed by the 10-3 treatment, primer application after the 10-0 treatment and primer application after the 10-3 treatment. The relationship among the surface morphology after pretreatment, fractured surface morphology and tensile bond strength was examined. It revealed that the surface morphology change by different pretreatment influenced the bond strength and the resulting fractured surface morphology. The correlation of tensile bond strength with the fracture morphology was explained.

  • Reverse osmosis seawater desalination facilities can extend the cleaning cycle and replacement time of the reverse osmosis membrane by pretreatment process. Selection of pretreatment process depends on water quality. It was attempted in this study to select approriate pretreatment process for the Masan bay, which was high in particles and organic content. For this purpose, performances of pretreatment processes such as filter adsorber (FA), pore controllable fiber (PCF), and ultrafiltration (UF) were compared based on the silt density index (SDI). The SDI value of the filtrate should be less than 3. The study results showed that UF can produce the filtrate quality satisfying the requirement. However, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) of UF increased quickly, reaching 0.6 bar within 4 days. In order to secure stable operation, FA and PCF were combined with UF. The study results showed that combination of PCF and UF was able to extend the filtration duration (more than 2 months) until to reach TMP of 0.6 bar.

  • The optimum alkali pretreatment parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature and potassium hydroxide concentration) for facilitate the conversion into fermentable sugar (glucose) from steam exploded (severity log Ro 2.45) barley husk were determined using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a factorial Central Composite Design (CCD). The prediction of the response was carried out by a second-order polynomial model and regression analysis revealed that more than 88% of the variation can be explained by the models. The optimum conditions for maximum cellulose content were determined to be 201 min reaction time, $124^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature and 0.9% potassium hydroxide concentration. This data shows that the actual value obtained was similar to the predicted value calculated from the model. The pretreated barley husk using acid hydrolysis resulted in a glucose conversion of 94.6%. This research of steam explosion and alkali pretreatment was a promising method to improve cellulose-rich residue for lignocellulosic biomass.

  • This study was conducted to find the optimum pretreatment method to improve the quality of Pleurotus eryngii pickled with the fermented soybean paste. Blanching(70 , 10min), salting(5%, 20 , 72hr) and drying(50 , 3hr) were used as pretreatment methods. The moisture loss of the mushrooms during pickling was accelerated more by salting and drying. Salinity increase was retarded by salting. Surface and internal browning of the mushrooms were suppressed by blanching. Hardness tended to increase sharply until 20 days of pickling and then slowly decreased. In the sensory evaluation, mushrooms pickled for 40 days were scored as the highest. Blanching was a superior treatment compared to the others in term of color, taste, flavor, texture and overall acceptability.

  • Recently, problems related to the natural dyeing have been addressed. Severer problems have been posed by the elution at metallic ions and dyestuff tram dyed fabrics. In order to prevent the elution tram the dyed fabrics, it is needed to improve the fastness. Especially, it is the most important measure to improve the fastness to perspiration in terms at human body safety. In this study, we employed chitosan pretreatment method bet ore the dyeing process, anticipating that the pretreatment might improve the fastness. We used Al, Sn, and Cu as mordants and investigated the fastness to light and perspiration of the chitosan treated and dyed fabric specimens. By the chitosan pretreatment, the fastness to perspiration improved, while the fastness to light did not.

  • For a characterization of the pretreated waste automotive catalyst the following analysis techniques were applied : EA(Elemental Analysis) BET(Brunaure-Emmett-Teller) and ICP-AES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry). The combustion activity of waste automotive catalyst was investigated for methanol acetaldehyde and toluene as model VOCs in a fixed bed reactor. carbon deposit amount was decreased with increasing catalyst showed a good catalytic activity for VOCs combustion at 40$0^{\circ}C$. Catalytic activity for methanol acetaldehyde and toluence combustion was very excellent and decreased with mileage. The catalytic activity of a waste automotive catalyst for methanol combustion increased after acid treatment. The acid effect of catalytic activity was summarized as follows: HNO3>HCI>H2SO4>CH3COOH. The waste automotive catalyst regenerated by the pretreatment method might have a excellent catalytic activity for VOCs combustion.

  • The effect of steam explosion coupled with alkali (1% sodium hydroxide, 1% potassium hydroxide and 15% sodium carbonate) or organosolv solvent (85% methanol, 70% ethanol and dioxane) on the production of sugar, changes in the chemical composition of M. sinensis were evaluated. The steam explosion coupled with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane were better as compared with other treatments based on the removals of acid insoluble lignin, and about 89.0% and 85.4%. Enzymatic hydrolysis of steam explosion with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane treated M. sinensis, gave a 98.0% and 96.5% of glucose conversion, respectively. These results suggested that pretreatment of M. sinensis with either potassium hydroxide or dioxane could be a promising pretreatment method for glucose production.

  • For the productivity improvement, it is necessary to analyze problem of the system and evaluate alternative plans. But, it if hard to experiment and evaluate alternative plans in real existing system. Therefore, it is necessary to synthetically analyze and evaluate alternative plans using simulation and statistical analysis method. In this case study, as a simulation language, Promodel is used to compare and evaluate four alternatives which are considered to improve the productivity of an object system. The object system is constituted of a pretreatment line and a painting line. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the decrease of the down time in pretreatment line can be effective to the productivity improve comparing with exiting system and other alternatives. The other purpose is to choose an alternative that has the best productivity improvement. The results of the simulation show that the possibility of improvement in productivity by decreasing the down time of pretreatment line. Two-Stage Bonferroni Procedure is used to choose the best alternative.

  • Effects of phenobarbital pretreatment on the pharmacokinetics of enterohepatic recirculating griseofulvin were investigated by comparing normal to bile duct cannulated rats and also the effects of enhanced endogeneous bile flow on the absorption of griseofulvin were studied by means of in situ recirculation method in phenobarbital-pretreated rats. Phenobarbital was administered orally for five days at the dose of 75 mg/kg/day. The influence of phenobarbital pretreatment on the absorption rate constant, area under the plasma concentration-time curve, maximum plasma concentration of orally administered griseofulvin was not found in bile duct cannulated rats. Decreased absorption clearance and apparent partition coefficient of griseofulvin in accordance with the amount of endogeneous bile juice seemed to be due to the decrease of thermodynamic activity of griseofulvin as bile forms the micelle with griseofulvin.

  • The solubilizations of Australian lignite by the fungus Poria cocos, Trichodermareesei, Candide tropicalis, and niger were investigated. Three different types of chemical pretreatment methods were used for increasing biosolubility of lignite. Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide were proven to be proper chemical pretreatment materials of Australian lignite. Poria cocos showed much better solubilization ability than other strains. Interpretation of the nature of coal solubilization by Poria cocos was based primarily on infrared, ultraviolet and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum analyses.
