  • The stability and performance (peel strength) of the acrylic copolymer and various modified rosin systems were investigated. The peel strength was measured over a wide range of scaling rates, and the influence of the viscoelasticity of the PSA(pressure sensitive adhesive) was considered. In the case of miscible systems, the peak of peel strength (PSA performance) over wide peel rates was changed and modified systematically with increasing glass transition temperature of the blends. The peak of the peel strength for blended systems shifts toward the lower rate side as glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the blend increased. The influence of esterification of the rosin on performance and stability against deterioration was greatly modified by blending with rosin of glycerol ester and rosin pentaerythritol ester. The failure mode of the blend varies with the combination with acrylic copolymer and modified rosin, and cohesive failure was found at a lower peel rate while interfacial failure was found at a high peel rate. A few systems where a single Tg could be measured, despite the fact that two phases were observed microscopically, were detected.

  • To prepare an acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarternary polymers were synthesized from butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarternary polymers were identified by FT-IR and Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatography. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were examined. The peel strength was 160 $g_{f}/25$ mm when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1, and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 sec at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate at, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 sec. In weathering resistance test, peel strength of $160{\sim}180$ $g_{f}/25$ mm after 1000 h, with no residual remains on the adhesive surface.

  • Adhesive joints have been widely used for fastening thin adherends because they can distribute the load over a larger area than mechanical joints, require no hole, add very little weight to the structure and have superior fatigue resistance. However, the fatigue characteristics of adhesive joints are much affected by applied pressure during curing operation because actual curing temperature is changed by applied pressure and the adhesion characteristics of adhesives are very sensitive to manufacturing conditions. In this study, cure monitoring and torsional fatigue tests of adhesive joints with an epoxy adhesive were performed in order to investigate the effects of the applied pressure during curing operation. From the experiments, it was found that the actual curing temperature increased as the applied pressure increased, which increased residual thermal stress in the adhesive layer. Therefore, the fatigue life decreased as the applied pressure increased because the mean stress during fatigue tests increased due to the residual thermal stress.

  • The effects of functional monomers on the pressure sensitive adhesive proporties were studied. Acrylic acid and other monomers were copolymerized by radical solution polymerization and their properties were measured. The desirability function methodology was applied to obtain optimum pressure sensitive adhesive properties. Acrylic acid showed more effective than acrylamide on peel strength increase. On the other hand acrylamide showed more effective than acrylic acid on tack decrease. The optimum monomer ratio of the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive recipe containing n-butylacrylate 81.7 mole%, acrylic acid 8.0 mole%, acrylamide 2.1 mole% and vinylacetate 8.2 mole% was obtained to result from the statistical analysis with the desirability function methodology. The estimated regression equation of desirability function(D) is as follows: $D=.857+.072X_1-.114X_2-.027X_3-.126X_1{^2}-.046X_1{\cdot}X_2-.063X_1{\cdot}X_3-.152X_2{^2}+.027X2{\cdot}X_3-.120X_3{^2}$ $X_1$:coded acylic acid, $X_2$:coded acylamide, $X_3$:coded vinylacetate

  • New pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for polarizer film were prepared by electron beam (e-beam) radiation to acrylic copolymers, and their adhesive properties were investigated. The acrylic copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization of $n$-butylacrylate (BA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and acrylic acid (AA). The acrylic copolymers were coated on PET release films to a thickness of 25 ${\mu}m$, laminated to polarizer films, and then radiated with e-beam at room temperature. Gel fractions of all the acrylic copolymers after e-beam radiation at 50 kGy were higher than 93%, and their crosslinking densities were increased with increasing the content of HEMA units. PSA prepared by e-beam radiation of acrylic copolymer synthesized with a feed ratio of BA/HEMA/AA = 89.5/10/0.5 (w/w/w) at a dose of 50 kGy exhibited the best adhesion performances in terms of peel strength, creep resistance, durability and reliability, and light leakage. It is expected that the preparation method of PSAs via e-beam irradiation will improve the producibility and workability of polarizer film for liquid crystal display.

  • UV irradiated acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) are prepared to be used for thermal pad in plasma display panel(PDP). The effect of the chemical structure of side-chain in comonomer and of crosslinking agent on wet-out property of acrylic PSAs in wide temperature range were investigated. The correlationship between viscoelastic behavior and adhesion properties, such as tack and peel strength, was also studied. The experimental results supported that wet-out and adhesion properties of acrylic PSAs were enhanced inversely proportional to side-chain length of comonomer in wide temperature range. The peel energy clearly increased in acrylic PSAs prepared by using di(ethylene glycol) dimethylacrylate (DEGDMA) for crosslinking agent. The results might be due to the difference in the glass transition temperature and viscoelastic behavior of acrylic PSAs.

  • In this study, solvent-free pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) using acrylic copolymer was prepared by UV radiation to investigate the effect of comonomer on the adhesion properties. Adhesive force value of PSA was increased with the amount of comonomer having shorter side chain due to the enhanced intrinsic surface energy. Peel and shear strength were also influenced by chemical properties of comonomer. The addition of comonomer, ethyl and n-butyl acrylate allows PSA sample with high peel and shear strength. This nay be explained in terms of correlation between loss modulus and glass transition temperature of PSA. As the addition of acrylic comonomers with long side chain length decreases the loss modulus of PSA, the deformation of PSA can not be inhibited.

  • A Polymeric emulsifier was synthesized by solution polymerization with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and acrylic acid. A series of polymeric emulsifier have been used in the emulsion copolymerization of 2-ethylhexyl actryacrylate and n-butyl acrylate. The size of the synthesized latex particles was around 145 nm and its distribution was very narrow. Emulsion with polymeric emusifier showed no coagulum after 7 cycles of freeze-thaw test, while the emulsion with traditional emulsifier exhibited coagulum after 2 cycles. The adhesion tests showed that the initial tackiness and peel strength decreased as the molecular weight and acrylic acid content of polymeric emulsifier increased, whereas the holding power increased.

  • The overlaid panels are important materials in interior and construction with added surface layers (PVC films, decorative paper, decorative veneer). Generally, the adhesive for decorative veneer to wood-based panel is urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive which cause the emission of formaldehyde during not only the manufacturing process, but also service life. In this study, environment-friendly SIS-based hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) was evaluated as a adhesive for bonding a decorative veneer. The various SIS-based hotmelt PSA was blended as a function of diblock content, softening point of tackifier, tackifier content, and applied to bonding the decorative veneer.
