  • To examine the effect of storage condition on the quality and microbiological change of strawberry “Minyubong”, the rate of weight loss, decay rate, pH and titratable acidity, and microbial (total bacterial count, mold and yeast) changes were determined during storage. Strawberry fruits were packaged with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Strawberries were then stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 20$^{\circ}C$, respectively. LDPE package was effective on the decrease of decay rate of strawberry as well as the rate of weight loss, compared with the non-packaged. Microbial changes of strawberry stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 20$^{\circ}C$ were monitored during storage. Packaging affected the microbial change, resulting in retarding the growth of total bacteria as well as mold and yeast, compared with the non-packaged, regardless of storage temperature. These results indicate that storage of strawberry fruits wrapped with LDPE at 4'C should be recommended in terms of quality as well as its shelf-life.

  • Packages of different atmospheres (air (control), 100% CO2, vacuum, and vacuum + O2 absorber) were prepared for 0.4 kg rice cake (ddukgukdduk) using gas-barrier plastic film and stored at 10℃ for 11 days. The stored products were evaluated in their packages atmosphere, total aerobic bacteria, yeast and molds, texture and sensory quality during storage period. In the air package, the O2 concentration decreased from initial 21% to 16% on storage 4 days and the CO2 concentration increased to 23% on storage of 11 days, which resulted from the growth of microorganisms. CO2 concentration decreased from initial 98% to 36% on storage 11 days in the 100% CO2 package. It is reasoned that CO2 was dissolved into the product reducing the volume of the package. Vacuum and vacuum +O2 absorber package maintained shrunk vacuum condition until 11 days of storage. Total aerobic bacteria count increased significantly in the control package (6.41 log (cfu/g) after 11 days) compared to the 100% CO2 package (4.96 log (cfu/g) after 11 days). Yeast and molds were 6.66 in control package, 3.43 in 100% CO2 package, 4.66 in vacuum package, and 3.78 in vacuum + O2 absorber package after 11 days. There was no significant difference between control and the other treatments for the texture of the stored products. Sensory quality was the worst in control package on the storage of 8 days. All treatment groups except control improved the quality preservation, but vacuum and vacuum + O2 absorber packages suffered from cracking of the product. Thus 100% CO2 flushing is suggested as a desired packaging condition.

  • During the monsoon in Bangladesh, the possibility of preserving wet ($700g\;H_2O$) straw by urea (50 g/kg straw DM) with or without polythene cover has been studied. The quality of preserved straw (PS) in terms of colour, smell and fungal infestation were recorded. Nutritive value of the PS was compared to that of a dry straw (DS) in two separate feeding trials on growing bulls (about 290 kg) without (Expt. 1) or with (Expt. 2) concentrate supplements. Over 96% of the wet straw was excellently preserved for over 5 months when covered with polythene in horizontal heaps (of appx. 4 tons). Whereas only 33% of the straw was well preserved in the uncovered (dome shaped) heaps (of approximately 9.5 tons). Each ton of wet straw costed Tk. 1413 and its preservation cost incurred Tk. 345. Urea preservation increased the crude protein content (95 vs. 50 g/kg), dry matter (DM) degradability at all (8, 16, 24, 48, 72 and 96) hours of incubation and at 48 hours, DM degradability (%) were 45 and 25 respetively for the PS and the DS. When fed alone, DM intake (75 vs. $106g/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$), total microbial N yield (27 vs. 54 g/d) and growth rate (-379 vs. 283 g/d) were higher (p < 0.01) in the PS than the DS. Supplementation of concentrate reduced the straw DM intake both in the DS ($51g/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$) and the PS ($958g/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$), but the substitution rate (SR%) was higher in the PS (42) than the DS (27). Higher substitution rate was probably responsible for the reduction in the differences between the DS and PS in their nutrient digestibilities, total microbial N yield (62 vs. 64 g/d) and growth rate(669 vs 339 g/d) when supplemented with concentrate. On 28th day of Expt. 2, feeding PS from one of the polythene covered heaps resulted nervous disorder due to unknown reason(s). Further studies on the effect of size and shape of heap on the preservation quality need to be determined.

  • Potatoes, Irish cobbler, were subject to quality evaluation from the physiological and physicochemical points of view during storage under different temperatures and relative humidities for 11 months. Quality criteria were sprouting, rotting, weight changes, moisture, total sugar, reducing sugar and vitamin C. Low temperature condition(LT, 2∼4$^{\circ}C$, 80% RH) was enough to preserve Potatoes for 11 months, but it was indicated to be limitations that the increase in reducig sugar as well as sprouting by about 3.3 to 6.7% occurred from the 3rd month of storage. Meanwhile, pit temperature(PT, 3∼15$^{\circ}C$, 75∼85% RH), room temperature(RT, 7∼17$^{\circ}C$, 80∼95% RH) and ambient temperature(AT, 2∼25$^{\circ}C$, 62∼72 RH) were shown infeasible conditions for the storage of potatoes mainly due to the increase In sprouting-rate and subsequent quality-loss after 3 months of storage. Based on the results, it proposed that more economical conditions, ranging 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$ and about 80% RH following sprout inhibition treatment should be used for the long-term storage of potatoes.

  • No one really doubts that the hottest area of dentistry in 21st century would most likely be 'implant'. With the support of a vast amount of research, implant has been successfully and rapidly absorbed into the field of general dentistry including private practitioners. For teeth with hopeless(or refractory) periodontitis or periapical pathosis, with no hesitation most dentists would think extraction as the sole treatment option followed by prosthodontic replacement possibly including implant. Not many dentists would take Trasplantation/Replantation as another treatment option for a particular condition. Dentistry is often more focused on 'Restoration' than 'Preservation' of natural dentition. 'Biologic Implant' is obviously much closer to the concept of 'Preservation'. Many different types of biologic implant system have been introduced to clinical dentistry so far. Many of those have failed to earn reasonable acknowledgement despite of the clinical success they brought. For some reason biologic implant has rather been alienated for long time. RPI(Ring Pin Implant) is designed to improve the prognosis and success rate of transplanted/replanted teeth. RPI is a Ti-based custom made implant system. It is fabricated either by electric casting or milling process. The major feature RPI gas is the 'ring & hole' structure. The hole should be no less than 1mm diameter to allow bone bridge formation thru it. The ring structure and bone bridge formation creates anti-torque activity, which largely increases the 'initial stability' of the transplanted/replanted teeth. It is also reported that RPI is beneficial in the aspect of resisting root resorption following replantation/transplantation procedure.

  • In order to operate Internet Banking, there is a important thing to precede, That is to carry out a scheme of one-stop to let clients transact anything they want to buy and establish the preservation of public security system between existing banking networks. (of course, that should be designed handily to the clients). In this paper, the protocol which is determined between banking network and Internet to maintain the preservation of public security. In other words, each XPM(X.25 Packet Manager) is a program to manage both system security and service at each other side; manage all packets which are connected by X.25 protocol. If other condition like law and institution is improved, it will be adopted to real operation with various service. Further more, we tan construct Electronic Commerce and adopt various digital money like electronic coin or check.

  • A supercritical fluid extraction was performed for the extraction of phenolics from grape seeds which up to now have been discarded. The optimum condition for extraction process was predicted through response surface methodology using central composit experimental design. The extraction amount of grape seed phenolics was increased by increasing extraction temperature, pressure, and concentration of co-solvent (ethanol). The optimum extraction conditions were 84.83$^{\circ}$C, 51.50MPa and 1.27% ethanol. The yield of phenolics using SFE was higher with 3 folds than ethanol and 4 folds than hexane but less than 80% methanol. In the respects of food poisoning, the approved solvents were restricted to ethanol and hexane. So, SFE for extraction of phenolics could be powerful alternative method for solvent extraction.
