  • A graded harmonic finite element formulation based on three-dimensional elasticity theory is developed for the structural analysis of 2D functionally graded axisymmetric structures. The mechanical properties of the axisymmetric solid structures composed of two different metals and ceramics are assumed to vary in radial and axial directions according to power law variations as a function of the volume fractions of the constituents. The material properties of the graded element are calculated at the integration points. Effects of material distribution profile on the static deformation, natural frequency and dynamic response analyses of particular axisymmetric solid structures are investigated by changing the power law exponents. It is observed that the displacements, stresses and natural frequencies are severely affected by the variation of axial and radial power law exponents. Good accuracy is obtained with fewer elements in the present study since Fourier series expansion eliminates the need of finite element mesh in circumferential direction and continuous material property distribution within the elements improves accuracy without refining the mesh size in axial and radial directions.

  • In this paper, a novel control scheme compensating source voltage unbalance and harmonic currents for hybrid active power filters is proposed, where no low/high-pass filters are used in compensation voltage composition. The phase angle and compensation voltages for source harmonic current and unbalanced voltage components are derived from the positive sequence component of the unbalanced voltage set, which is simply obtained by using digital all-pass filters. Since a balanced set of the source voltage obtained by scaling the positive sequence components is used as reference values for source current and load voltage, it is possible to eliminate the necessity of low/high-pass filters in the reference generation. Therefore the control algorithm is much simpler and gives more stable performance than the conventional method. In addition, the source harmonic current is eliminated by compensating for the harmonic voltage of the load side added to feedback control of the fundamental component.

  • This study analysed determinants of Foreign Direct Investment to ASEAN+ 3 member nations using panel data for which cross-sectional data are combined with time series data. The data for the analysis included the amount of FDI, GDP, and indexes of economic independence. This study collected data from six nations(Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) whose data were easily available, China and Japan from 2003 to 2007 and analysed them. The results are summarized as follows: Using the pooled OLS method, we found Model 2 had the highest explanatory power whose adjusted R-squared was 89.4%, which accounted for about 89% of foreign investment. Using the fixed effect model, Model 2 had the highest explanatory power whose adjusted R-squared was 96.8%, which accounted for about 97% of foreign investment. Using the probability effect model, Model 5 had the highest explanatory power, but in respect to its statistical significance, only GDP was 1% significant and the rest variables had no significance.

  • The UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) controls the magnitude and phase of the series injected voltage to exchange the real and reactive power with transmission line. The UPFC consists of two inverters connected together through the DC link capacitor. This paper describes the detailed UPFC switching-level model. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) method is chosen to operate the inverters. Automatic voltage control mode and automatic power flow control mode is selected to control the UPFC. EMTP simulation is offered to obtain the basic operation characteristics of the UPFC and the dynamic characteristics of the UPFC is studied in detail.

  • In this paper, we studied the method for simultaneous quenching of a transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two superconducting elements connected in series. Only an element between two elements of the transformer type SFCL was quenched like the case of the resistive type SFCL. By this quenching characteristics, the power burden of the superconducting element was increased. In order to solve this problem, we connected the neutral line between two superconducting elements and the center of secondary coils. The two elements were all quenched in the transformer type SFCL with a neutral line. As a result, the power burden of superconducting elements was decreased, so it was efficient for the increase of power capacity of the transformer type SFCL.

  • This paper is concerned with High Frequency, High Voltage Generator for X-ray using zero-voltage soft-switching PWM DC-DC high-power converter by Resonant method, which makes the most of the parastic LC parameters of high-voltage transformer link, for diagnostic X-ray power generator. The converter circuit basically utilizes phase-shift pulse width modulated series Resonant full-bridge PWM DC-DC high-power converter operating at a constant frequency;25kHz. The converter output regulation is digitally controlled using DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for obtaining a fast rising time and adjust output voltage within a wide load range.

  • This paper presents two voltage domain stacking topologies for powering integrated digital loads such as multiprocessors or 3D integrated circuits. Pairs of loads and capacitors are connected in series to form a stack of voltage domains. The voltage is balanced by switching the position of the capacitors in one case and the position of the loads in the other case. This method makes the voltage regulation robust to large differential load power consumption. The first configuration can be named the load stacking topology. The second configuration can be named the capacitor stacking topology. This paper aims at proposing and comparing these two topologies. Models of both topologies and a switching scheme are presented. The behavior, control scheme, losses and overall performance are analyzed and compared theoretically in simulation and experiments. Experimental results show that the capacitor stacking topology has better performance with a 30% voltage ripple reduction.

  • The present study proposes a method for modeling a SONAR transducer with dual resonance. The Butterworth van-Dyke (BVD) model, a conventional SONAR transducer modeling method, can model only one resonance point. Hence, to address its disadvantage and to model the dual resonance, a dual resonance BVD model consisting of two serial BVD models is proposed. The two BVD models are connected in a series, and each simulate resonance at low frequency and high frequency, which allows the modeling of two resonance points. Eight elements compose the equivalent circuit by connecting the BVD models in a series, which is twice as great as that of the existing BVD model. The element value of the dual resonance BVD model is extracted by using the particle swarm optimization method. Analysis was also performed to identify the effects of changes in the value of elements that compose the equivalent circuit on the impedance characteristics of the equivalent circuit through simulation in which element values varied.

  • This paper proposes the hybrid algorithm for the optimization of the structure and parameters of the fuzzy neural networks by genetic algorithms (GA) to improve the behaviour and the design of fuzzy neural networks. Fuzzy neural networks have a distinguishing feature in that they can possess the advantage of both neural networks and fuzzy systems. In this way, we can bring the low-level learning and computational power of neural networks into fuzzy systems and also high-level, human like IF-THEN rule thinking and reasoning of fuzzy systems into neural networks. As a result, there are many research works concerning the optimization of the structure and parameters of fuzzy neural networks. In this paper, we propose the hybrid algorithm that can optimize both the structure and parameters of fuzzy neural networks. Numerical example is provided to show the advantages of the proposed method.

  • This paper focuses on the zero-voltage/zero current transition voltage equalization circuit for the series connected battery cell. By adding auxiliary resonant cells at the main switching devices such as MOSFET or IGBT, zero current switching is achieved and turned off loss of switching elements is eliminated and by the voltage/second balancing of the inductor, zero voltage switching can be applied to switching element. Transformer coupling between battery cells and ZVZCT (Zero Voltage Zero Current Transition) switching method allow the fast balancing speed and high frequency operation, which reduces the size and weight of the circuit. The validity of the battery equalization is further verified using simulation involving four lithium-ion battery cell models.
