  • Recently, the underwater radiated noises generated from large commercial ships have become a globally important issue. Countries with large ports and environmental protection organizations demand strict safety guidelines in relation to underwater radiated noise. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and underwater radiated noise of a commercial ship. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the commercial ship, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the underwater radiation noise. The vibrational energy of the structure is treated as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM to calculate the underwater radiation noise. Numerical simulations are presented for the commercial ship under various frequencies, and reliable results are obtained.

  • Power Flow Boundary Element Method(PFBEM) has been used as a promising tool for radiation problems in the midium-to-high frequency. PFBEM is the numerical method that applies boundary element technique to Power Flow Analysis (PFA). Indirect PFBEM is developed for acoustic scattering problems in the open field and in various frequency. To verify the analytic results of indirect PFBEM for acoustic scattering problems are compared with those of SYSNOISE, and the results using two analytic methods show a good agreement.

  • This paper proposes the new hybrid analysis of vibration in the medium to high frequency ranges including PFA and SEA concept. The core part of this method is the applications of coupling loss factor(CLF) instead of power transmission, reflection coefficients in boundary condition. This method shows very promising compared to the classical PFA for the various damping loss factors and wide ranges of frequencies. Besides this paper presents the applicable method in Power Flow Finite Element Method by forming the joint element matrix with CLF. These hybrid concepts are expected to improve SEA and PFA methods in vibration analysis.

  • Power Flow Analysis(PFA) is used as the promising tools for the vibration and noise predictions of complex structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. When the noise and vibration of a complex structure are analyzed, Power Flow finite Element Method combining PFA with FEM is efficient in vibration analysis, and Power Flow Boundary element Method combining PFA with BEM is usful in noise analysis. PFFEM software, PFADS has been developed for the vibration analysis of coupled system structures. Also, NASPFA, the noise analysis software based on PFBEM, has been developed. Through the several upgrades, the current version PFADS R3 and NASPFA R2 are used for the vibration and noise analysis of system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. In this paper, the structure and function of each software are explained, and the vibration and noise levels of vehicle structures predicted by each software are shown.

  • Power Flow Analysis (PFA) is introduced for solving the noise and vibration analysis of structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. The vibration analysis software, $PFADS_{C{+}{+}}$ R4 based on Power Flow Finite Element Method (PFFEM) and the noise prediction software, $NASPFA_{C{+}{+}}$ R1 based on Power Flow Boundary Element Method (PFBEM) are developed. In this paper, the coupling equation which represents relation between structural energy and acoustic energy is developed for vibro-acoustic coupling analysis. And vibro-acoustic coupling analysis software based on PFA and coupling equation is developed. Developed software is composed of translator, cavity-finder, solver and post-processor over all. Translator can translate FE model into PFADS FE model and cavity-finder can automatically make NASPFA BE model from PFADS FE model for noise analysis. The solver module calculates the structural energy density, intensity of structures, the fictitious source on the boundary and the acoustic energy density at the field in acoustic cavities. Some applications of vibro-acoustic coupling analysis software to various structures and cruise ship are shown with reliable results.

  • The free surface flow problem has been one of the most interesting and challenging topic in the area of the naval ship hydrodynamics and ocean engineering field. The problem has been treated mainly in the scope of the potential theory and its governing equation is well known Laplace equation. But in general, the exact solution to the problem is very difficult to obtain because of the nonlinearlity of the free surface boundary condition. Thus the linearized free surface problem has been treated often in the past. But as the computational power increases, there is a growing trend to solve the fully nonlinear free surface problem numerically. In the present study, a time-dependent finite element method is developed to solve the problem. The initial-boundary problem is formulated and replaced by an equivalent variational formulation. Specifically, the computations are made for a highly nonlinear flow phenomena behind a transom stern ship and a vertical strut piercing the free surface.

  • In recent years, various studies have been conducted on oscillating-water-column-type wave energy converters (OWC-WECs) with multiple chambers with the objective of efficiently utilizing the limited space of offshore/onshore structures. In this study, a numerical investigation based on a numerical wave tank was conducted on single, dual, and triple OWC chambers to examine the hydrodynamic performances and the energy conversion characteristics of the multiple water columns. The boundary value problem with the Laplace equation was solved by using a numerical wave tank based on a finite element method. The validity of the current numerical method was confirmed by comparing it with the measured data in the previous experimental research. We undertook a series of numerical simulations and observed that the water column motion of sloshing mode in a single chamber can be changed into the piston motion of different phases in multiple OWC chambers. Therefore, the piston motion in the multiple chambers can generate considerable airflow at a specific resonant frequency. In addition, the division of the OWC chamber results in a reduction of the time-dependent variability of the final output power from the device. As a result, the application of the multiple chambers leads to an increase of the energy conversion performance as well as a decrease of the variability of the wave energy converter.

  • Here, the dynamic instability characteristics of aero-thermo-mechanically stressed functionally graded plates are investigated using finite element procedure. Temperature field is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varied in thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to simple power law distribution. For the numerical illustrations, silicon nitride/stainless steel is considered as functionally graded material. The aerodynamic pressure is evaluated based on first-order high Mach number approximation to the linear potential flow theory. The boundaries of the instability region are obtained using the principle of Bolotin's method and are conveniently represented in the non-dimensional excitation frequency-load amplitude plane. The variation dynamic instability width is highlighted considering various parameters such as gradient index, temperature, aerodynamic and mechanical loads, thickness and aspect ratios, and boundary condition.

  • This paper presents research on methods for the reduction of forklifts' noise level for the increased comfort and safety of its operator. A cooling fan with a high air volume flow rate installed in the forklift acts as an important design parameter which efficiently cools the heat exchanger system, helping to transfer internal heat from the engine room to the outdoors with both transmitted and diffracted opening noises. The cooling fan contributes significantly to both the forklift's emitted sound power and the operator room's noise level, thereby necessitating research on the forklift's reduction of acoustic power level and transmission. A noise analysis for various fan models with a biomimetic design based on eagle-wing geometry was conducted. In addition to the acoustic power generation, the aerodynamic performance of the cooling blade is also strongly influenced by the design of airfoil distribution, thereby requiring optimization. The cooling fans were fabricated and installed in the forklift in order to check the efficacy of the forklift engine's cooling, and the final version of the fan was measured for its ability to lower acoustic power level and cool the engine room. This study explains the aerodynamic and acoustic features of the designed fans with the use of BEM analysis and forklift test results.
