Zirconia powder containing 3 mol% yttria(3Y-PSZ) with and with out Fe$_2$O$_3$ addition was coated on tile cast iron substrate by plasma spraying method. The erosion experiments were performed at temperatures from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. A gas blast type erosion tester was used to examine erosion behavior of the specimens. The results of 3Y-PSZ coatings showed that tile erosion rate had maximum value at 40$0^{\circ}C$. It coincided with tile results of phase transformation tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase caused by low temperature thermal degradation. The tensile stress relaxation and the micro-hardness improvement significantly influenced on the erosion rate at $600^{\circ}C$. In the case of Fe$_2$O$_3$ added 3Y-PSZ coatings, the erosion rate of tested at $25^{\circ}C$ showed maximum value at 5.0 mol% Fe$_2$O$_3$ added coating. This tendency is caused by the improvement of mechanical properties and the tensile residual stress. The erosion rate at 200'c and 400'L showed significantly decrease by Fe203 addition. This decrease is believed to be the stabilization of the tetragonal phase and the increase of micro-hardness.

Yb2Si2O7 has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the base material of SiC and has excellent corrosion resistance in a high-temperature oxidizing atmosphere including water vapor, so it is being studied as one of the materials for environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). In this study, Yb2Si2O7 powder granule is deposited using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) with different Ar/He ratios. Phase formation and microstructural characteristics are investigated with the coated specimens. In the coating layer, the crystallinity decreased, and the amorphous content increased from an increase in the ratio of Ar. In addition, the various types of particles involved by local volatilization of Si according to the Ar/He ratios were identified.

The Ni-SiC composite plating was performed in a Watt nickel solution and the wear resistance of the composite layer was studied on a pin-on-flat type wear tester. The volume losses and friction coefficients were measured. It was found that the quantity of SiC powder in the composite layers was affected by SiC concentration, pH, temperature, and agitation speed in the Watt nickel solution. The hardness and wear resistance of the coatings increased with SiC content. The quantity of SiC powder in the coating from a nickel sulfamate solution is larger than that of the Watt nickel solution, because the amount of nickel ions absorbed on the SiC powder in the nickel sulfamate solution is greater than that in the Watt's solution.

With increase in operating temperature of gas turbine for higher efficiency, it is necessary to find new materials of TBC for replacement of YSZ. Among candidate materials for future TBCs, zirconate-based oxides with pyrochlore and fluorite are prevailing ones. In this study, phase structure and thermal conductivities of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxide system are investigated. $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ system are comprised by selecting $La^{3+}/Gd^{3+}$ as A-site ions and $Zr^{4+}$ as B-site ion in $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structures. With powder mixture from each oxide, $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxides are fabricated via solid-state reaction at $1600^{\circ}C$. Either pyrochlore or fluorite or mixture of both appears after heat treatment. For the developed phases along $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions, thermal conductivities are examined, with which the potential of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions for TBC application is also discussed.

The suspension plasma spray (SPS) technique has been used to obtain dense $Y_2O_3$ coatings and to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional air plasma spray (APS). SPS uses suspensions containing micrometer or sub-micrometer sized powders dispersed in liquid media. In this study, microstructure developments and mechanical properties have been investigated as functions of particle size of source material and plasma processing parameters such as plasma power and stand-off distance. The microstructure of the coating was found to be highly related to the particle size and the plasma processing parameters, and it was directly reflected in the hardness and the adhesion strength. When fine powder (BET $16.4m^2/g$) was used as a raw material in the suspension, there was, with increasing stand-off distance, a change from a dense structure with a slightly bumpy surface to a porous structure with a cauliflower-like surface. On the other hand, when a coarse powder (BET $2.8m^2/g$) was used, the coating density was lower, with microscopic splats on the surface. Using fine $Y_2O_3$ powders, the coating layer with an optimum short stand-off distance showed a high hardness of approximately 90% of that of sintered $Y_2O_3$ and an adhesion strength several times higher than that of the coating by conventional APS.

To evaluate the wear characteristics of very thin ceramic coated layer, it is very important to investigate its wear process in great detail. An effective method for investigating the wear of a thin layer is the observation of wear process in microscopic detail, using in-situ system. In this study, based on the SEM Tribosystem as in-situ system, the microscopic wear mode of TiN coatings was investigated in repeated sliding. Consequently, four modes were revealed for TiN coatings: Ploughing, powder formation, flake formation and coating delimitation. Sc(Severity of contact) can clarify transition condition of those microscopic wear modes.
Thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) are being applied in many industrial fields such as thermal power generation, aviation and seasonal fields. $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal spray coating powders are commercially used as thermal-barrier coating materials to protect against oxidation and corrosion of heat-resistant alloys at elevated temperatures. Currently, $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal-spray powder is made using the industrial co-precipitation process, which is very complex and requires a lot of time. In this study, orthorhombic $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powders were fabricated by mechanical mixing, which is more economical than the co-precipitation process. A tetragonal, yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) coating-layer was produced by plasma spraying, using orthorhombic $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) powder. Our experimental results indicate that $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) mixed powder can be used economically in industry because it is no longer necessary to make this powder by liquid and gas-phase methods.

For surface modification, bulk metallic glass coatings were fabricated using metallic glass powder and a mixture of a self-fluxing alloy or/and hard metal alloys with a heat-resisting property using a high velocity oxy-fuel coating thermal spraying process. Microstructural analyses and mechanical tests were carried out using X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, an atomic force microscope, a three-dimensional optical profiler, and nanoindenation. As a result, the monolithic metallic glass coating was found to consist of solid particle and lamellae regions that included many pores. Second phase-reinforced composite coatings with a self-fluxing alloy or/and hard metal alloy additives were employed with in-situ $Cr_2Ni_3$ precipitate or/and ex-situ WC particles in an amorphous matrix. The mechanical behaviors of the solid particles and lamella regions showed large hardness and elastic modulus differences. The mechanical properties of the particle regions in the metallic glass composite coatings were superior to those of the lamellae regions in the monolithic metallic glass coatings, but indicated similar trends in matrix region of all the coating layers.

High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spraying was used to coat Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder onto the SS41 steel plate. Macrostructure of the coated specimen has been investigated by scanning electron micrograph (SEM). High temperature oxidation behavior of the coated specimen and SS41 steel have been studied. From the results of SEM observation, Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder was coated well onto the substrate SS41 steel. Porosity onto the coated layer was only 0.38%. The oxidation results showed that Ti(Al,O)/$Al_2O_3$ powder coated SS41 steel have improved little oxidation resistance at $900^{\circ}C$ in air, but improved remarkably oxidation resistance at $800^{\circ}C $ in air compare to the substrate SS41 steel.
