In practice, cavitation phenomena occur in unbounded flows. However, the wall effect is unavoidable during experiments at a closed section such as a cavitation tunnel. Especially, supercavity generated behind a cavitator is relatively large and thick, so that geometric and dynamic characteristics of the cavity are affected by the tunnel wall. In order to apply experimental results into the unbounded flow field, physical correlations are necessary. In this paper, we proposed an image method based on a potential flow to simulate the wall effect. Considering two-dimensional wedge-shaped bodies, configurations and drag characteristics of the cavity were examined according to the distance ratio to the wall surface. The results were compared and verified with existing theoretical and experimental results.
It has been indicated that the rotor/stator interaction has distinct causes of unsteadiness, such as the viscous vortex shedding, wake/stator interaction and potential rotor/stator interaction. In this paper, the mechanism of unsteady potential interaction in one stage axial compressor is numerically investigated for blade row ratio 1:1 and 2:3 at design point and for blade row ratio 2:3 at off-design point in two-dimensional view point. The numerical technique used is the upwind scheme of Van-Leer's Flux Vector Splitting(FVS) and Cubic spline interpolation is applied on zonal interface. In this study the flow unsteadiness due to potential interaction are found to be larger in blade row ratio 2:3 than in 1:1. The total pressure rise in blade row ratio 2:3 is closer to the real value in design point than that in 1:1. The change of unsteady pressure amplitude according to the variation of stator exit pressure is very small.
In this study, we assessed dependency of small hydropower potentials on the two different runoff such as the estimated runoff based on the rainfall amounts and measured runoff. The hydpropower potentials were evaluated using actural power generations taken from Deoksong, Hanseok, and Socheon small hydropower plants over Han and Nakdong river basins, respectively. As a result of comparing the actual power generation amount with the potential amount based on the rainfall amount and the estimated amount based on the observed flow amount by each small hydroelectric power plant, the degree of latent small hydro energy by the observed flow was confirmed to be high. It is confirmed that the potential hydroelectric power generation rate is estimated to be about average 30%Point higher than the actual generation amount as a result of the measured flow rate rather than using the rainfall amount. Based on this, a method for improving the degree of the actual generation amount is proposed.
In cases of the microfluidic channel, the electrokinetic influence on the transport behavior can be found. The externally applied body force originated from the electrostatic interaction between the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann field and the flow-induced electrical field is applied in the equation of motion. The electrostatic potential profile is computed a priori by applying the finite difference scheme, and an analytical solution to the Navier-Stokes equation of motion for slit-like microchannel is obtained via the Green's function. An explicit analytical expression for the induced electrokinetic potential is derived as functions of relevant physicochemical parameters. The effects of the electric double layer, the zeta potential of the solid surface, and the charge condition of the channel wall on the velocity profile as well as the electroviscous behavior are examined. With increases in either electric double layer or zeta potential, the average fluid velocity in the channel of same charge is entirely reduced, whereas the electroviscous effect becomes stronger. We observed an opposite behavior in the channel of opposite charge, where the attractive electrostatic interactions are presented.

Recently supercavitating torpedo has been studied because of its high-speed performance as the next generation of underwater weapon systems. In this study, we present a numerical method based on the potential flow. Characteristic features of the shape of supercavities and drag forces are investigated. In addition, we introduce a viscous-potential method to compensate for the effects of viscosity. The results are compared with viscous calculations using a commercial package, FLUENT V13.
This study investigated the steady-flow effects present in the numerical computation of the resistance added to a ship in waves. For a ship advancing in the forward direction, a time-domain 3D Rankine panel method is applied to solve the ship motion problem, and the added resistance due to waves is calculated using a near-field method, with the direct integration of the second-order pressure on the hull surface. In the linear potential theory, the steady flow is approximated by the basis potential of a uniform flow or double-body flow in order to linearize the boundary conditions. By applying these two different linearization schemes, the coupling effects between steady and unsteady solutions were examined. Furthermore, in order to analyze the steady-flow effects on the hull geometry, the computation results for two realistic hull forms, a KVLCC2 tanker and DTC containership, were compared. In particular, the mj term, which represents the coupling effects under the body boundary condition, was evaluated considering the geometry of a non-wall-sided ship. Lastly, the characteristics of the linearization schemes were examined in relation to the disturbed waves around a ship and the components of added resistance.

This study aims to analyze the mixing characteristics of hydrogen considered as a new fuel for internal combustion engines. As the physical property of helium gas is similar to that of hydrogen, helium gas was used in this study. To analyze the steady and unsteady behavior of jet, helium gas was injected into the stationary atmosphere at the normal temperature and pressure. Concentration of helium gas in the center of jet flow is in inverse proportion with axial distance from the nozzle tip. This agrees with the free jet theory of Schlichting. The relative equation for dimensionless concentration to radial/axial distance the axial distance of potential core region, the cone angle a of the jet flow and the relative equation for arriving distance of the front of jet flow to the lapse of time are obtained. But free jet theory of Schlichting in the dimensionless concentration is not in agreement with the present experimental results of the distance of the radial direction. It needs more study. When the arrival frequency of jet flow is used as a parameter, the transition area changing from unsteady flow area into steady flow area becomes gradually wider downstream, but its ratio for the whole unsteady flow area gradually decreases.

Self-potential (SP) is sensitive to groundwater flow and there are many causes to generate SP. Among many mechanisms of SP, pore-fluid flow in porous media can generate potential without any external current source, which is referred to as electrokinetic potential or streaming potential. When calculating SP responses on the surface due to geothermal fluid within an engineered geothermal system (EGS) reservoir, SP anomaly is usually considered to be generated by fluid injection or production within the reservoir. However, SP anomaly can also result from geothermal water fluid within EGS reservoirs experiencing temperature changes between injection and production wells. For more precise simulation of SP responses, we developed an algorithm being able to take account of SP anomalies produced by not only water injection and production but also the fluid of geothermal water, based on three-dimensional finite-element-method employing tetrahedron elements; the developed algorithm can simulate electrical potential responses by both point source and volume source. After verifying the developed algorithm, we assumed a simple geothermal reservoir model and analyzed SP responses caused by geothermal water injection and production. We are going to further analyze SP responses for geothermal water in the presence of water production and injection, considering temperature distribution and geothermal water flow in the following research.
In this study a newly designed electro-osmotic micro-mixer is proposed. This study is composed of a channel and metal electrodes attached locally on the side wall surface ultimately to control the mixing effect. To obtain the flow patterns, numerical computation was performed by using a commercial code, CFD-ACE. The fluid-flow solutions are the cast into studying the characteristics of stirring in terms of the mixing index. It was shown that the local control of the electric potential can indeed contribute to the enhancement of mixing effect.
A finite volume numerical model is developed for simulating non-equilibrium electroosmotic flow in micro- and nanochannels. The Guoy-Chapman model is adopted to compute the flow and electric potential. The Nernst-Planck equation is employed to trace unsteady transports of ionic species, i.e., time-dependent net charge density. A new set of boundary conditions based on surface charge density are designed rather than using the conventionally-employed zeta potential. A few issues for an efficient computation of electroosmotic flows are discussed. Representative computational examples are given to illustrate the robustness of the numerical model.
