In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.

A new constitutive model for the representation of the seismic behaviour of steel bars including hardening phenomena is presented. The model takes into account relative slip between bars and concrete, necessary for the estimation of the structural behaviour of r.c. elements and of the level of strain induced by earthquakes on bars. The present work provides the analytical formulation of the post-yielding behaviour of reinforcements, resulting in a continuous axial stress-slip relationship to be implemented in engineering software. The efficacy of the model is proved through the application to a cantilever column, for whose bars the constitutive law is derived.
This paper presents analytical solutions for skewed thick plates under transverse loading that have previously been unreported in the literature. The thick plate solution is obtained in a framework of an oblique coordinate system. The governing equation is first derived in the oblique coordinate system, and the solution is obtained using deflection and rotation as partial derivatives of a potential function developed in this research. The solution technique is applied to three illustrative application examples, and the results are compared with numerical solutions in the literature and those derived from the commercial finite element analysis package ANSYS 11. These results are in excellent agreement. The present solution may also be used to model skewed structures such as skewed bridges, to facilitate efficient routine design or evaluation analyses, and to form special elements for finite element analysis. At the same time, the analytical solution developed in this research could be used to develop methods to address post-buckling and dynamic problems.
Point bending is commonly used for cambering and curving steel girders to large radii. In this system, a hydraulic ram or press is used to apply concentrated loads at selected points to obtain the required vertical (cambering) or horizontal (curving) curved profile from induced permanent deformations. This paper derives closed form solutions that relate loads to permanent deformations for horizontally curving wide flange steel beams based on their post-yield response. These solutions are presented in a parametric form to identify the relationship between key variables and their impact on the accuracy of the curving operation. It is shown that point bending could yield parabolic curved profiles that are within 1% of a desired circular curve if the span length to radius of curvature ratio (L / R) is less than 1.5 and the point loads are spaced at one third the beam length. Safe limits are then established on loads, strains and curvatures to avoid damaging the steel section. This leads to optimization of the point bending operation for inducing a circular profile in wide flange steel beams of any size.
This unit - structure of truss stabilized by cable tension is composed of four truss member adding to a central post and eight cables, and is connected by hinge joints and is stabilized by cable tension. As this unit - structures itself is a statically closed and stabilize system individually, it can be employed to assemble a structure with a variety of configuration. In this paper, for determination the shape of the unit - structure of truss stabilized by the cable, characteristics such as the stabilized range of the various geometrical parameter about unit system and the relation of the best governing paramter is demonstrated, and the relation of the results is compared in the range for the stabilization of unit-structure.
A three-dimensional constitutive modeling for reinforced concrete is presented for finite element nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete. The targets of interest to the authors are columns confined by lateral steel hoops, RC thin shells subjected to combined in-plane and out-of-plane actions and massive structures of three-dimensional (3D) extent in shear. The elasto-plastic and continuum fracture law is applied to pre-cracked solid concrete. For post cracking formulation, fixed multi-directional smeared crack model is adopted for RC domains of 3D geometry subjected to monotonic and reversed cyclic actions. The authors propose a new scheme of decomposing stress strain fields into sub-planes on which 2D constitutive laws can be applied. The proposed model for 3D reinforced concrete is experimentally verified in both member and structural levels under cyclic actions.
This Paper deals with the analysis of both unstrengthened and strengthened prestressed concrete girder bridges. Finite element method is utilized to perform the analysis of superstructures. Based on the grillage method of analysis. emphasis is Placed on the modeling techniques for structures. The conventional grillage method of analysis is modif'=ed so that the interaction between the slab and gilder behaviors can be taken into account in the analysis A Prototype of simply supported prestressed I-type girder bridge is selected for the analysis. The results of numerical analyses are compared with those of load test. The results of analysis indicate that the proposed method of analysis gives more realistic response of bridges than the conventional grillage method.
A number of efforts had been sought to instrument bridges for the purpose of structural monitoring and assessment. The outcome of these efforts, as gauged by advances in the understanding of the definition of structural damage and their role in sensor selection as well as in the design of cost and data-effective monitoring systems, has itself been difficult to assess. The authors' experience with the design, calibration, and operation of a monitoring system for the Kishwaukee Bridge in Illinois has provided several lessons that bear upon these concerns. The systems have performed well in providing a continuous, low-cost monitoring platform for bridge engineers with immediate relevant information.
The pathological basis for cervicogenic headache may lie within the cervical spine. Clinically patients with cervicogenic headache complain of unilateral pain radiating in an atypical fashion from the occipital region. Our clinic has successfully treated post-traumatic cervicogenic headache with C2 spinal ganglion block. The technique of fluoroscopic guided injection was used to locate the C2 spinal ganglion. This technique is facilitated by the constancy of the anatomical relationship between the C2 ganglion and the midpoint of the atlanto-axial joint. There are no major structures near the proximity of the ganglion.
The usage of autosuture instruments and techniques in resection of bronchovascular structures gained increasing acceptance amongst surgeons in the recent years. The manipulation of these devices are simple, safe, and shortens operating time by avoiding numerous ties and sutures. We have been using autosuture instruments in most of pulmonary resections in Yongdong Severance hospital, and had a satisfactory results. However, we recently have experienced post-pneumonectomy rupture of left pulmonary vein on postoperative one day where the rupture site was in the border of left atrium and left pulmonary vein where the stapler was fired. The patient underwent emergency operation to control massive bleeding and successfully managed by left atrial suture.
