  • This study examined influencing factors on the attitudes toward elders with a focus on empathy. Data were gathered from 291 nurses working at 14 geriatric hospitals in Kyunggi-Do, Chungchung-Do and Incheon. In analyzing the data, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis were adopted. Attitudes toward elders were neutral on the average; those nurses revealed both positive and negative aspects such as friendly, good, kind, conservative, sick and dependent. Of the four empathy scales, only empathic concern revealed significant correlation with the attitudes toward elders. Regression model included empathic concern and the nurses' characteristics. Empathic concern was significant in predicting the attitudes toward elders after controlling for the effects of the nurses' characteristics. Experience of voluntary work for elders was the only predictor among individual characteristics. Explanatory power of the model was 10.7%. We need to develop intervention programs raising empathy among nurses. The instrument measuring empathy needs to be examined.

Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire including information such as demographics, work-related characteristics, working environment, experience of violence, and burnout. The violence was classified as verbal violence, physical threat, or physical violence committed by dentists, patients, or caregivers. Descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine the factors associated with burnout. The levels of verbal violence, physical threat, and physical violence by dentists were $0.53{\pm}1.26$, $1.12{\pm}2.70$, and $0.04{\pm}0.42$, respectively. The levels of verbal violence, physical threat, and physical violence by patients and caregivers were $1.50{\pm}1.89$, $1.41{\pm}2.24$, and $0.24{\pm}1.38$, respectively. The score of burnout was $3.13{\pm}0.43$. Total violence, verbal violence, and physical violence by dentists were positively correlated with burnout. Total violence, verbal violence, and physical threat by patients and caregivers were positively correlated with burnout. In multiple linear regression analysis, the level of physical violence by dentists was positively associated with burnout of dental hygienists (${\beta}=0.95$, p=0.032). The levels of total physical violence (${\beta}=0.28$, p=0.002), verbal violence (${\beta}=0.15$, p<0.001), and physical threat (${\beta}=0.19$, p=0.009) by the patients or caregivers were positively associated with burnout of dental hygienists. This study examined the association between violence and burnout among dental hygienists. The level of violence showed positive correlation with burnout. • This study was designed to grasp the degree of job stress affecting dental technicians and the degree of the symptoms of their job stress. With this in mind, the researcher selected a total of 170 dental technicians living in Seoul and Incheon, conducting a research in a period ranging from August 1,2001, to August 20, 2001. The researcher made use of a structured questionnaire whose reliability and feasibility are proved. The questionnaire is composed of a total of 55 questions: thirteen questions related to the subjects' general characteristics; 28 questions connected to the measurement of job stress and fourteen questions linked with the measurement of job-stress symptoms. The researcher analyzed the findings with the aid of SPSS(Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The research came to draw the following conclusions on the basis of frequency, percentage, T-test, and F-test, multiple regression. I. The analysis into the job stress of the subjects indicates that there is a significant difference in difficult questions among their work places, working hours, academic background, job satisfaction and jobs(P<.05). The job stress stands at 3.48 on the average, and the area of conflict among too much work and job performance turns out to be highly perceived. 2. The analysis into the degree of the symptoms of the job stress of the subjects shows that there is a significant difference in work place, working hours, job satisfaction and the continual maintenance of job(P<.05). The symptoms of job stress accounts for 2.65 on the average. Physical symptoms turn out to be highly perceived; The response 'My arms and legs are killing me' proves to stand for 3.03. 3. The correlation between job stress and the symptoms of job stress turns out to be significant(r=0.519, P<0.001), and there is a significant correlation between the average points of each job-stress area and the average points of the symptoms of job stress. All in all, it is necessary that dental technicians themselves should make positive efforts to control and relieve stress and that more efficient programs should be implemented with a view to dealing with stress.

  • This study aims to identify the difference in teacher commitment at workplace child-care centers and understand the relationship between teacher commitment and teacher efficacy. To achieve this, the data were collected from 176 teachers who were working at workplace child-care centers in Gyeonggi province, One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, and Pearson's correlation analysis were performed. According to the results, it was found that there is a high positive correlation between teacher commitment and teacher efficacy. The teacher commitment appears high and especially the teacher commitment to infants and toddlers appears the highest at the workplace child-care centers. It was also found that there is a significant difference in teacher efficacy depending on academic ability and work experience of teachers, age of infants and toddlers, and total number of teachers in the centers. This study is significant in that it provides the basic data for drawing up the measures to support the teacher commitment as one of the internal characteristics of the teachers working at the workplace child-care centers. Further studies need to explore the relationship between teacher commitment and teacher efficacy depending on the type of kindergarten or day care center.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate whether working married women in different occupational classes affected diverse health outcomes. Methods : We used data for married women aged 25-59 (N=2,273) from the 2005 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. Outcome measures included physical/mental and subjective/objective indicators (selfrated poor health, chronic diseases, depression, and suicidal ideation from reported results; metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia from health examination results). Agestandardized prevalence and logistic regression were employed to assess health status according to three types working groups (housewives, married women in manual jobs, married women in non-manual jobs). Sociodemographic factors (age, numbers of children under 7, education, household income) and health behaviors (health examination, sleep, rest, exercise, smoking, drinking) and a psychological factor (stress) were considered as covariates. Results : Non-manual married female workers in Korea showed better health status in all five health outcomes than housewives. The positive health effect for the non-manual group persisted in absolute (age-adjusted prevalence) and relative (odds ratio) measures, but multivariate analyses showed an insignificant association of the non-manual group with dyslipidemia. Manual female workers showed significantly higher age-adjusted prevalence of almost all health outcomes than housewives except chronic disease, but the associations disappeared after further adjustment for covariates regarding sleep, rest, and stress. Conclusions : Our results suggest that examining the health impact of work on married women requires the consideration of occupational class.
