Teaching Switching Converter Design Using Problem-Based Learning with Simulation of Characterization Modeling

  • In this paper, teaching in a "switching converter (SC) design" course using problem-based learning (PBL) with dynamicbehavior- model simulation, given at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology (LHU), Taiwan, is proposed. The devised methodology encourages students to design and implement the SCs and regulate the controller's parameters in frequency domain by using 'sisitool' ('bode') in the MATLAB toolbox. The environment of PBL with converter characterization modeling and simulation reforms the learning outcome greatly and speeds up the teaching-learning process. To qualify and evaluate the learning achievements, a hands-on project cooperated with the continuous assessment approach is performed to modulate the teaching pace and learning direction in good time. Results from surveys conducted in the end of the course provided valuable opinions and suggestions for assessing and improving the learning effect of the proposed course successively. Positive feedbacks from the examinations, homework, questionnaires, and the answers to the lecturer's quizzes during class indicated that the presented pedagogy supplied more helpfulness to students in comparisons with conventional teaching paradigm, their learning accomplishments were better than expected as well.

  • Chinese medicine hospital enables the users to expect more efficient cure result in the psychological stability and the comfortable indoor environment by supplying the functional and aesthetic cure space with the medical action of good quality Medical activity is to treat the human life. Thus, hospital must be more human-centered-place than other space. Thus study is establishment of space to be able to lead more rational and active participation than the conservative and passive image of the department of diagnosis and treatment for outpatients is desirable. This study is the indoor schedule to suggest the direction about the department of diagnosis and treatment for outpatients of Chinese medicine hospital of native image with more comfortable and positive approach on the basis of above points at issues as the schedule to fulfill the performance of medical function and the emotional and psychological satisfaction of users as the human being-centered-medical institution on the subject of the department of diagnosis and treatment for outpatients in Chinese medicine hospital. And, this researcher progressed as follows by being premised on this 1. Description of Goai, Range and Method of Study and Suggestion of Study Direction 2. Concept introduction as the Basic Approach of Theory which is necessary for Study 3. The Problems were recognized by grasping the present condition in Korea through the questionaines 4. establishment of Concept and direction which are necessary for planning the indoor of the department of Diagnosis and Treatment for Chinese Medicine Hospital 5. A Study on Analyzing Thermal Strain of Weldment during Cooling used at Low MS Point Weld Consumables (MS Point 저감 용접재에 적용한 냉각시 용접부 열변형률 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study targets to make clear the connection between MS (Martensite start) point and welding shrinkage. We approved that a Martensite-transformed weldment may not yield state under low MS point, but also admitted the limitation of numerical calculation by inherent strain approach or thermal strain approach. Therefore, new thermal strain formulae during cooling stages were made. As a thermal strain is obtained by integrating thermal extension coefficient, a constant of integration should be decided. In our suggested formulae, the origin was based on totally remained austenite, and added strain from volume changes in Martensite transformation was based on totally transformed ferrite. Through the suggested methodology, It is verified that an MS point under a critical temperature can let weld shrinkage relax and the critical value can be obtained. For supporting this process, 15 weld-consumables were made, were tested by fillet type and were measured. As a result, a positive correlation between MS point and level of weld-distortion was obtained, but it was rather weak.

  • Control of structural response due to seismic excitation in a manner of coupling adjacent buildings has been actively developed, and most attention focused on those buildings of similar height. However, with the rapid development of some modern cities, multi-story buildings constructed with an auxiliary low-rise podium structure to provide extra functions to the complex become a growing construction scheme. Being inspired by the positively examined coupling control approach for buildings with similar height, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive analytical study on control effectiveness of using friction dampers to link the two buildings with significant height difference to supplement the recent experimental investigation carried out by the writers. The analytical model of a coupled building system is first developed with passive friction dampers being modeled as Coulomb friction. To highlight potential advantage of coupling the main building and podium structure with control devices that provide a lower degree of coupling, the inherent demerit of rigid-coupled configuration is then evaluated. Extensive parametric studies are finally performed. The concerned parameters influencing the design of optimal friction force and control efficiency include variety of earthquake excitation and differences in floor mass, story number as well as number of dampers installed between the two buildings. In general, the feasibility of interaction control approach applied to the complex structure for vibration reduction due to seismic excitation is supported by positive results.

  • Project-based learning is an innovative approach to learning that teaches a multitude of strategies critical for success in the twenty-first century. Students drive their own learning through inquiry activity, as well as work collaboratively to research and create projects that reflect their knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of eco-friendly school project activity which is applied from one of project-based learning approach on learning outcomes of students in ninth-grade environment course in middle school. The participants were given a questionnaire before and after the environmental project activities. In solving the school environment issues themselves, students have practiced invaluable problem solving skills. This study indicates that school students' awareness about the environment has positively changed by experiencing the eco-friendly school project. In addition, this project affects students' variety of environmental awareness. This project could be applied to school environmental education programs and to environment lessons, developmental activities or club activities for a positive impact on students' environmental awareness.

Detection Copy-Move Forgery in Image Via Quaternion Polar Harmonic Transforms

  • Copy-move forgery (CMF) in digital images is a detrimental tampering of artefacts that requires precise detection and analysis. CMF is performed by copying and pasting a part of an image into other portions of it. Despite several efforts to detect CMF, accurate identification of noise, blur and rotated region-mediated forged image areas is still difficult. A novel algorithm is developed on the basis of quaternion polar complex exponential transform (QPCET) to detect CMF and is conducted involving a few steps. Firstly, the suspicious image is divided into overlapping blocks. Secondly, invariant features for each block are extracted using QPCET. Thirdly, the duplicated image blocks are determined using k-dimensional tree (kd-tree) block matching. Lastly, a new technique is introduced to reduce the flat region-mediated false matches. Experiments are performed on numerous images selected from the CoMoFoD database. MATLAB 2017b is used to employ the proposed method. Metrics such as correct and false detection ratios are utilised to evaluate the performance of the proposed CMF detection method. Experimental results demonstrate the precise and efficient CMF detection capacity of the proposed approach even under image distortion including rotation, scaling, additive noise, blurring, brightness, colour reduction and JPEG compression. Furthermore, our method can solve the false match problem and outperform existing ones in terms of precision and false positive rate. The proposed approach may serve as a basis for accurate digital image forensic investigations.

  • Purpose: There is a need to examine changes in the health care environment and the impact on gerontological nursing care in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this article recent healthcare paradigm changes, gerontechnology, high tech and high touch, person-centered approaches are discussed. Methods: A narrative review was used. Results: Cyber physical system, artificial intelligence, advance and convergence of bioengineering, and information communication technology are changing the health care paradigm to "precision", "prediction" and "personalization". Entry into the global aging society and the surge in the elderly population worldwide has led to searches for a new means to prepare for projected demands of this growing population. Thus, efforts such as gerontechnology have been made to apply and utilize recent innovative science and technology in order to promote the health and life of elders. There is a great emphasis on the convergence of high tech and high touch, in which humanistic and artistic approach are critical in order to assure that technology is beneficial to human beings rather than harmful. Conclusion: Positive healthcare experiences among patients and their families are emphasized by utilizing new technology and employing high touch while providing personalized care with a person-centered approach.

Qualitative Approach to Maintaining the Effect of Fashion Therapy (패션테라피 효과 유지에 대한 질적 접근)

  • Previous studies on the effect of fashion therapy have been conducted with psychiatric patients; however, this study explores the effects in fashion therapy for women with non-pathological problems. Previous studies did show if the effect of fashion therapy could be maintained continuously; therefore, we intend to examine the existence of the long-term effects of fashion therapy in an empirical manner and provide implications for social and public interest. This study used a qualitative approach to investigate the effects of fashion therapy with the following results. Low self-esteem, negative emotions, and rigid thinking symptoms appeared by numerous stress factors, and various changes were made through fashion therapy. Emotional changes such as positive emotions and feeling of achievement, and psychological changes including self-concept formation, change of sight and self-esteem improvement appeared. Sociological and behavioral changes were also identified. We found the maintained and long term effects of fashion therapy; therefore, study provides academic implications to reconsider the social value of fashion.

Distribution characteristics of a solar-surface magnetic field in the recent four solar cycles

  • Solar cycles are inherent to the Sun, which experiences temporal changes in its magnetic activity via the surface distribution of the solar magnetic field. This raises a fundamental question of how to derive the distribution characteristics of a solar-surface magnetic field that are responsible for individual solar cycles. We present a new approach to deriving as long-term and large-scale distribution characteristics of this quantity as was ever obtained; that is, we conducted a population ecological analysis of Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO) Synoptic Charts which provide a more than 40-year time series of latitude-longitude maps of solar-surface magnetic fields. In this approach, solar-surface magnetic fields are assumed as hypothetical trees with magnetic polarities (magnetic trees) distributed on the Sun. Accordingly, we identified a peculiarity of cycle 23 with a longer period than an average period of 11 years; specifically we found that the negative surface magnetic field had much more clumped distributions than the positive surface magnetic field during the first one-third of this cycle, while the latter was dominant over the former. The Sun eventually spent more than one-third of cycle 23 recovering from these imbalances.
