  • The electrical characteristics of soils have been used for investigating soil properties. The purpose of this study is the development and application of the electrical resistivity cone probe (ERCP) for the evelation of the porosity in the field with high precision. The shape of the probe tip is a cone shape to minimize the disturbance during penetration. In addition, the four terminal pair configuration is adopted to minimize the electrical interference. The electrical resistances are continuously measured during penetration of the ERCP using penetration rigs with 0.33 mm/sec penetration rate at Incheon and Busan sites. With the measured resistance profile and electrical resisivity of electrolyte of undisturbed samples, soil porosity profiles are obtained by using Archie's law. The empirical coefficients for the Archie's law are obtained based on the electrolyte extracted from the undisturbed samples. The estimated porosity profiles show similar trends to those of in-situ penetration tests such as SPT, CPT, and DMT. This study suggests that the ERCP may be an effective tool for the porosity estimation in the field with minimum disturbance.

  • This study aimed to obtain equilibrium concentration on adsorption removal of ammonia nitrogen by activated carbon, to express the adsorption characteristics following Freundlich isotherm and also, based on the value obtained, to investigate the relationship between physical characteristics of activated carbon and dynamics of ammonia nitrogen removal by obtaining rate constant and effective pore diffusivity. The results summarized from this study are as follows. It was noted that powdered activated carbon showed better adsorption ability than granular activated carbon. The value of constant (f) of Freundlich isotherm of powered activated carbon was $4.6{\times}10^{-8}$ which is bigger than that of granular activated carbon. The adsorption rate constant on ammonia nitrogen of powered activated carbon with high porosity and low effective diameter was highest as 0.416 hr-1 and the effective pore diffusivity ($D_e$) was lowest as $1.17{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/hr$, and the value of ammonia nitrogen adsorption rate constant of granular activated carbon was $0.149{\sim}0.195hr^{-1}$. It was revealed that, with the same amount of dosage, the adsorptive power of activated carbon with lower effective diameter and bigger porosity was better and its rate constant was also high. With a little adsorbent dosage of 2 g, there was no difference removal ability of ammonia nitrogen as change of adsorption properties.

  • The phenomena of detachment and movement of One particles are one of the important mechanisms both in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. In geoenvironmental engineering, in particular, movement of fine particles may facilitate the transport of contaminants since the particle surfaces absorb contaminants before movement. Weathered granitic residual soils, which are the most abundant in Korea. contain large quantities of fine particles up to 50%. The characteristics of fine particle movement of weathered granitic residual soils are investigated in this paper. Samples are obtained from Poiiong, Shinnaedong in Seoul and Andong in Kyungpook : each of the samples represents typical residual soil types in Korea. Laboratory experiments for the three adopted soil types are performed. It is found that effluent concentration of the samples is influenced by porosity, fine particle percentage and particle size distribution. The critical velocity decreases as the fine particle percentage increases and the rate of change of erosion rate increases as the porosity increases. And well-graded samples showed less effluent concentrations compared to poorly-graded samples. The governing equation on the physical mechanism of fine particle movement and its nomerical solution scheme are suggested on the basis of the test results.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum rooting media composition for the production of high-quality rose cuttings. The percentage of rooting was highest in peatmoss (P) and coarse vermiculite (CV) mixture (1:2, v/v). In 'Little Mable' and 'Suplesse', the rate was above 95%, and 'Red Velvet', 'Noblesse', 'Rote Rose', and 'Sweetness' showed 100% rooting rate. 'Rote Rose' showed lowest rooting rate, but in the composition, the rate was 100%. In the composition, root growth was accelerated. Root number, root weight, and root diameter increased in P:CV (1:2) mixture. However, root length increased in peatmoss and perlite mixture (1:2). This results might be caused by the water holding capacity and porosity of the rooting media composition.

  • The demand for porous asphalt mixtures is increasing because it has a range of functions, such as reducing traffic accidents and traffic noise. On the other hand, its application is delayed due to concerns about durability. This study examined the effects of the maximum aggregate size, temperature, and porosity of an asphalt mixture on the durability. To this end, the durability measure was set to the Cantabro loss rate. Mixtures having the same porosity of 20% and the maximum aggregate diameters of 13 mm, 10 mm, and 8 mm were tested at 20℃ and -20℃. Mixtures containing 20% and 22% voids with the same material having the same diameter were tested. With 20% porosity, there was no significant difference in durability when there was a change in the maximum aggregate size. There was a significant difference between 20℃ and -20℃, but no significant difference in durability when there was a 2% difference between 20% and 22%. The significance of this study is that the durability was presented quantitatively by tests and statistical analysis. This research will help improve the durability of porous asphalt mixtures by evaluating the factors affecting the durability quantitatively.

  • Freezing of saturated porous media contained in a rectangular cavity has been studied experimentally. Water and different diameter glass beads consitituted the liquid and porous media. Solidification front shape, the effects of bead diameter and initial liquid temperature was investigated. When the hot wall temperature was below $4^{\circ}C$, the freezing rate was higher at the top than at the bottom due to the density inversion, but with increasing the hot wall temperature the freezing rate at the top was effected by the liquid temperature and was lower than at the bottom. With increasing the bead diameter, the difference of freezing rate between top and bottom was increased and depends on thermal conductivity. When the liquid temperature was low in the beginning, the freezing rate was high, but with increasing the time almost the same with those of high temperature liquid.

  • Parametric study was performed using the SCW numerical model for evaluating the performance of the SCW. The five ground related parameters, which are porosity, hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, geothermal gradient, and five SCW design parameters, which are pumping rate, well depth well diameter, dip tube diameter, bleeding rate, were used in the study. Numerical simulations were performed for short-term (24-hour) simulation. The study results indicate that the parameters that have important influence on the performance of SCW were hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, geothermal gradient, pumping rate, and bleeding rate. Overall, this study showed that various factors had a cumulative influence on the performance of the SCW, and a numerical simulation can be used to accurately predict the performance of the SCW.

  • Recently, wave dissipating structures with porosity are widely used to improve habor tranquility and to reduce the wave overtopping rate. In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to examine hydraulic efficiency of slit caissons, igloo blocks, and hollow blocks. The model tests showed that slit caissons were the most effective in dissipating wave energy under moderate wave conditions. Slit caissons and igloo blocks showed no significant difference in reducing wave overtopping rate. Hallow blocks are less effective in reducing wave overtopping rate than slit caissons and igloo blocks lU1der higher wave energy conditions.

  • Little is known about how the increased porosity of a deciduous windbreak, which results from loss of leaves, influences wind speed reduction. We hypothesized that, with loss of foliage, the wind speed reduction effectiveness of a deciduous windbreak decreases on near leeward side but not on further leeward side and that wind speed recovers faster in the full foliage season than in other seasons. During summer, autumn, and winter (full, medium, and non-foliage season, respectively), we observed wind speed and direction around a deciduous windbreak in a traditional Korean village on windward and near and further leeward sides (at -8H, 2H, and 6H; H = 20 m, a windbreak height). We used a linear mixed effects model to determine that the relative wind speed reduction at 2H significantly decreased from 83% to 48% ($F_{2,111.97}=73.6$, P < 0.0001) with the loss of foliage. However, the relative wind speed reduction at 6H significantly increased from 26% to 43% ($F_{2,98.54}=18.5$, P < 0.0001). Consequently, wind speed recovery rate between 2H and 6H in summer was two times higher than in autumn and ten times higher than in winter ($F_{2,102.93}=223.1$, P < 0.0001). These results indicate that deciduous windbreaks with full foliage seem to induce large turbulence and increase wind speed recovery rate on leeward side. Our study suggests that further research is needed to find the optimal foliage density of a deciduous windbreak for maximizing windbreak effectiveness regardless of seasonal foliage changes.

  • TRISO coatings on $ZrO_{2}$ surrogate kernels were conducted by a fluidized-bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) method. Effects of the deposition temperature and the gas flow rate on the properties of SiC layer were investigated in the TRISO-coated particles. Deposition rate of the SiC layer decreased as the deposition temperature increased in the temperature range of $1460^{\circ}-1550^{\circ}C$. At the deposition temperature of $1550^{\circ}C$ the SiC layer contained an excess carbon, whereas the SiC layers had stoichiometric compositions at $1460^{\circ}C\;and\;1500^{\circ}C$. Hardness and elastic modulus measured by a nanoindentation method were the highest in the SiC layer deposited at $1500^{\circ}C$. The SiC layer deposited at the gas flow rate of 4000 sccm exhibited a high porosity and contained large pores more than $1{\mu}m$, being due to a violent spouting of particles. On the other hand, the SiC layer deposited at 2500 sccm revealed the lowest porosity.
