  • Recently, the necessity of deep and double-deck tunnels has been grown day by day due to the increase of traffic volume at metropolitans and thus the study on the divergence of those tunnels becomes required. Therefore sensitivity analyses were conducted with FLAC 2D program by selecting ground condition, coefficient of lateral pressure, support pattern, and depth of rock cover as parameters. Ultimately, this study is to find the optimal shape and support method of a diverged section. As the results of this study, it turned out that the box type gave higher stability of the section than arch type unlike the general thought. It can be explained that the arch type has about 30% bigger excavation area than the box type. When the ground conditions are poor, steel pipe grouting reinforcement gives higher stability than rockbolt reinforcement, but its thickness and range do not give a great influence on the stability of the enlarged section.

  • This case study deal with the investigation of various causes and analyses concerning the cases of the collapse of reinforced segmental retaining walls installed for newly constructing a peripheral road within the campus of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ University located in Gyeonggi-do. As results of stability analyses and reviewing of design documents concerning collapsed reinforced segmental retaining walls, such a collapse appeared because of problems related to construction including poor-compacted backfill, the omission of the investigation on the bearing capacity, the length and space in the installation of reinforced materials, and drainage systems. Also, problems during diverse types of designing were confirmed involving the stability analysis of the entire slope stability to be considered during designing and failure in application of the proposed methods of FHWA or NCMA which are generally used for two-tier reinforced segmental retaining walls. In addition, based on these details of the stability assessment, the study proposed reinforcement solutions and construction methods for stabilizing reinforced segmental retaining walls to be reconstructed in the future.

  • The reduction behavior of silver ions to silver nanoparticles is an important topic in polymer/silver salt complex membranes to facilitate olefin transport, as this has a significant effect on the long-term performance stability of the membrane. In this study, the effects ofthe solvent type on the formation of silver nanoparticles, as well as the long-term membrane performance of a solid polymer/silver salt complex membrane were investigated. These effects were assessed for solid complexes of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) $(PVP)/AgBF_4$, using either an ionic liquid (IL), acetonitrile (ACN) or water as the solvent for the membrane preparation. The membrane performance test showed that long-term stability was strongly dependent on the solvent type, which increased in the following order: IL > ACN >> water. The formation of silver nanoparticles was more favorable with the solvent type in the reverse order, as supported by UV-visible spectroscopy. The poor stability of the $(PVP)/AgBF_4$ membrane when water was used as the solvent might have been due to the small amount of water present in the silver-polymer complex membranes actively participating in the reduction reaction of the silver ions into silver nanoparticles. Conversely, the higher stability of the $(PVP)/AgBF_4$, membrane when an IL was used as the solvent was attributable to the cooperative coordination of silver ions with the IL, as well as with the polymer matrix, as confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implant thread depth on primary stability in low density bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The insertion torque was measured by inserting Ti implants with different thread depths into solid rigid polyurethane blocks (Sawbones) with three different bone densities ($0.16g/cm^3$, $0.24g/cm^3$, and $0.32g/cm^3$). The insertion torque value was evaluated with a surgical engine. The static compressive strength was measured with a universal testing machine (UTM) and the Ti implants were aligned at $30^{\circ}$ against the loading direction of the UTM. After the static compressive strength test, the Ti implants were analyzed with a Measurescope. RESULTS. The Ti implants with deeper thread depth showed statistically higher mean insertion torque values (P<.001). Groups A and group B had similar maximum static compressive strengths, as did groups C and D (P>.05). After the static compressive strength, the thread shape of the Ti implants with deeper thread depth did not show any breakage but did show deformation of the implant body and abutment. CONCLUSION. The implants with deeper thread depth had higher mean insertion torque values but not lower compressive strength. The deep threads had a mechanical stability. Implants with deeper thread depth may increase the primary stability in areas of poor quality bone without decreasing mechanical strength.

  • In this study, we evaluated the characteristics by the addition of 3 different kinds of nonionic surfactant to improve the dispersion stability of slurries. Slurry stability is an issue in any industry in which settling of particles can result in poor performance. So we observed the variation of particle size and settling rate when the concentration and addition time of surfactant are changed. When the surfactant is added after milling process, the particle size and pH became low. It is supposed that the particle agglomeration was disturbed by adsorption of surfactant on alumina abrasive. The settling rate was relatively stable when nonionic surfactant is added about 0.1~1.0 wt%. When molecular weight(MW) is too small like Brij 35, it was appeared low effect on dispersion stability. Because it can't prevent coagulation and subsequent settling with too small MW. The proper quality of MW for slurry stability was presented about 500,000. Consequently, the addition of nonionic surfactant to alumina slurry has been shown to have very good effect on slurry stabilization. If we apply this results to copper CMP process, it is thought that we will be able to obtain better yield.

  • The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is widely used in various fields and the proportional-integral (PI) controller is popular in PMSM control systems. However, the motor parameters are usually unknown, which can lead to a complicated PI controller design and poor performance. In order to design a PI controller with good performance when the motor parameters are unknown, a control algorithm based on stability margin is proposed in this paper. First of all, based on the mathematical model of the PMSM and the least squares (LS) method, motor parameters are estimated offline. Then based on the estimation values of the motor parameters, natural angular frequency and phase margin, a PI controller is designed. Performance indices including the natural angular frequency and the phase margin are used directly to design the PI controller in this paper. Scalar functions of the d-loop and the q-loop are selected. It can be seen that the designed controller parameters satisfy Lyapunov large scale asymptotic stability theory if the natural angular frequencies of the d-loop and the q-loop are large than 0. Experimental results show that the parameter estimation method has good accuracy and the designed PI controller proposed in this paper has good static and dynamic performances.

  • Damages by jellyfish are occurring frequently around the world. Among them, accidents caused by jellyfish stings are serious enough to cause death. So we designed a jellyfish blocking net and analyzed its stability to prevent sting caused by jellyfish entering the beach. To this end, the dynamic behavior of the jellyfish blocking net according to the current speed (0.25-1.0 m/s) and the net type (50, 100 and 150 mm) on the upper part of the blocking net was modeled using the mass spring model. As a result of simulations for the model, the horizontal tension (horizontal component of the mooring tension) of the mooring line increased with the decrease in the mesh size on the upper part of the blocking net at all current speeds, but exceeded the holding force at high tides faster than 0.5 m/s and exceeded the holding force at all current speeds at low tide. Therefore, the jellyfish blocking nets showed poor stability overall. The depth of the float line had a little difference according to the upper mesh size and increased lineary proportional to the current speed. However, the float line sank too much to block the incoming jellyfish. These analysis results helped us find ways to improve the stability of the jellyfish blocking net, such as adjusting the length of the mooring line and improving the holding power. Therefore, it is expected that this technology will be applied us various underwater structures to discover the weaknesses of the structures and contribute to increasing the stability in the future.

  • Although the mileage of electric vehicles can be increased based on the excellent energy density of the LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2, it is known that the reason for limiting its use is the low lifespan and poor surface stability due to the structural deformation of the LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2. To improve the structural stability of LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2, electrochemical performance is improved by La coating on the surface. La-modified LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 shows an initial capacity of 210.6 mAh/g, a capacity retention rate of 89.9 % after 50 cycles, and a retention rate of 52.5% at 6.0 C. These are superior performances than the pristine sample, because the structural stability of the LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode is improved by the La coating.

  • We report new polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (PSFLC) cells with mechanical stability which is achievable by introducing photospacers in the cells. It was found that the mechanical st ability of the PSFLC cell was effected by introduction of photo spacers. We analyzed the dependence of mechanical stability and memory property on the density of photospacers in the PSFLC cell. The stability and memory properties of PSFLC Cells depending on photospacer density are discussed. 1. Introduction Recently, flexible displays have attracted much attention because they have remarkable advantages: thinner, lighter, non-breakable and conformable features. Flexible displays have various potential applications such as e-book and e-paper displays utilizing the distinct features. E-book and E-paper displays demand very low power consumption, so that bistable memory liquid crystal modes are required in case of flexible plastic LCDs for those application. Three kinds of memory LC modes have been developed; bistable nematic, bistable cholesteric and bistable FLC. Among them SSFLC as one of bistable FLC has big advantages such as low driving voltage, wide view angle and fast response time, SSFLC cells are, however, very weak against mechanical shock. Polymer stabilized FLC (PSFLC) has been developed to overcome the poor mechanical stability of SSFLC. PSFLC was known to have network structure that FLCs are oriented with smectic layer ordering in polymer network. The polymer network stabilizes the FLC orientation, which leads to improvement of mechanical stability of PSFLCD. A lot of studies have been done for the application of PSFLC to flexible $LCDs.^{[1{\sim}12]}$ However, it should be noted that PSFLC does not have sufficient mechanical stability for the particular applications such as smart card LCD, where LCD is highly bendable.Bead spacer was mainly used to maintain cell gap of conventional PSFLCDs. But the spacer density of it is not locally uniform in the cell, so that it is generally difficult that the PSFLCDs with bead spacers show sufficient mechanical stability. In order to more improve the mechanical stability of PSFLCDs, we introduced photospacers into PSFLCDs. In this paper, we describe the improvement of mechanical stability by introducing photospacers into PSFLCDs.

  • In this work, transparent conductive oxide(TCO) films such as $In_2O_3-SnO_2$(ITO) and $In_2O_3-ZnO$(IZO) were prepared on polyethylene naphthalene(PEN) and glass substrates by using rf-magnetron sputtering system. The TCO films deposited on PEN substrate show very poor conductivity as compared to that of the TCO films deposited on glass substrates. From the results of the residual gas analysis(RGA) test, this poor stability of plastic substrate is presumed to be caused by the deteriorated adhesion between the TCO films and the plastic substrate due to outgassing from the plastic substrate during deposition of TCO films. From our experiment, it is found that the vaporization of some defects in the plastic substrates deteriorate the adhesion of the TCO films to the plastic substrate, because the most plastic substrates containing the water vapor and/or other adsorbed particles such as organic solvents. Mixing of these gases vaporized in the sputtering process will also affect the electrical property of the deposited TCO films. Inorganic thin composite $(SiO_2)_{40}(ZnO)_{60}$ film as a gas barrier layer is coated on the PEN substrate to protecting the diffusion of vapors from the substrate, so that the TCO films with an improved quality can be obtained.
