Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the association between cohabitation status and sleep quality in family members of people with dementia (PwDs). Methods: Data of 190 365 participants aged ≥19 years from the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey were analyzed. Participants were categorized according to their cohabitation status with PwDs. Multiple logistic regression and ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between the cohabitation status of PwDs' relatives and sleep quality measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and PSQI subscales. Results: Compared to participants without PwDs in their families, both cohabitation and non-cohabitation with PwDs were associated with poor sleep quality (cohabitation, male: odds ratio [OR],1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08 to 1.52; female: OR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.20 to 1.64; non-cohabitation, male: OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.05 to 1.24; female: OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.14 to 1.33). In a subgroup analysis, non-cohabiting family members showed the highest odds of experiencing poor sleep quality when the PwD lived alone (male: OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.14 to 1.91; female: OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.24 to 2.01). Cohabiting male and female participants had higher odds of poor subjective sleep quality and use of sleeping medications than non-cohabiting male and female participants, respectively. Conclusions: The residence of PwDs and cohabitation status may contribute to poor sleep quality among PwDs' family members. The circumstances faced by cohabiting and non-cohabiting family members should be considered when evaluating sleep quality in family members of PwDs, and appropriate interventions may be needed to improve sleep quality in both cohabiting and non-cohabiting family members.
Objectives : This study investigated poor self-rated health and its associated factors in married Korean women, focusing on the burdens related to family affairs and social support. Methods : Cross-sectional data from 3,039 married women (between 25 and 64 years old) who completed Korean Longitudinal surveys of Women and Families were analyzed. Results : Among working women, only two factors-lack of husband's involvement in housework and insufficient communication with husband - influenced poor self-rated health. Among housewives, lack of husband's involvement in housework, insufficient communication with husband, low satisfaction of marriage, and avoidance of alcohol consumption were associated with poor self-rated health. Conclusions : Regardless of whether women are employed or housewives, husband's support is a very important factor affecting women's health. Social efforts for changing perceptions and values are needed so that men and women mutually support each other in family affairs.
Female-headed household is one of the common family type in the changing Korean society. This study explored and described the coping strategies of poor female household heads who were in struggle with economic, physical, and emotional problems. The data was gathered by in-depth interviews with fifteen poor female heads of households. In the process of qualitative interview and analysis, the coping strategy was emerged as an important theme. The major strategies which the poor female heads had adopted were as follows. First strategy was making up their minds to live as heads of households to keep their children in the fence of family. Second was accepting that any husbands would not be helpful in general. Third was developing independence, which meant providing their families on their own labor without expecting the support from social network or welfare system. Forth strategy was giving the present situation a positive definition: it gave them the emotional comfort.
This study analyzes diverse factors in time poverty and quality of life in dual-earner families with preschool children that pertain to the individual, family, and occupation. Data were taken from the 17th edition of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study developed by the Korea Labor Institute in 2014. The sample consists of 826 households who are dual-earner families with preschool children. The major findings are as follows. First, this study identified inadequacies in personal care time for dual-earner families with preschool children. Second, the results show that gender, recognition of gender role, and overall satisfaction of occupation are related to the time poverty of dual-earner families. Men are more likely to experience time poverty than women, and equal recognition of gender role and satisfaction of occupation indicate a negative relation on the time poverty of dual-earner families with preschool children. Last, quality of life in non-time-poor groups is higher than for groups who experience time poverty. Also, health state, earned income, work-family life conflict, and overall satisfaction of occupation are commonly related to quality of life in both groups. The results suggest implications for comprehensive policies to address family time issues.
The purpose of this study was to examine the health status of the daughter and daughter- in-law caregivers who care for a cognitively and/or functionally impaired elderly, individual to identify factors that were related to reported health outcomes, and to investigate the negative and positive impacts of family caregiving. Data was collected from 120 daughter and daughter-in-law caregivers and care-recipients using face to face interviews. Most caregivers were daughters- in-law (77.5%) and most care-recipients were female (88.3%). Sixty-eight percent (n=81) of caregivers reported depressive symptomatology. General health also deteriorated by caregiving. Caregivers reported several negative impacts (difficulties): care-recipients' problematic behaviors, deterioration of their own health, pressure from social norms related to family caregiving in Korea, intrafamily conflict, and economic problems. Contrary to the popular belief, caregivers reported diverse positive impacts of family caregiving (68.3%): a sense of filial responsibilities, recognition from elderly, family members, relatives, and society, education for the children, and familial harmony. Higher depression score was predicted by lower family income, the presence of cognitive impairment of care-recipients, and higher level of social conflict of caregivers. Poor general health of caregivers was predicted by older caregivers' age, lower competing roles of caregivers, and poor emotional health. While not seeking to deny the negative aspects of family caregiving, it is also necessary to understand positive aspects of family caregiving to see complete picture of caring for an elderly family member.

Purpose: This study was conducted to compare self-care behaviors and self-care behavior related factors for groups of patients with good, inadequate and poor glycemic control. The study was based on variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior by Ajzen, habit and family support. (1991). Methods: Participants were 134 patients with type 2 diabetes (good glycemic control group: 57, inadequate glycemic control group: 40, poor glycemic control group: 37). Self-care behaviors, intention to self-care behavior and self-care behavior related variables (attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, habits and family support) were measured. Data were collected from August 12 to September 25, 2014 and were analyzed using $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, ANCOVA, and logistic regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: Among the three glycemic groups, there were significant differences in self-care behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, family support, and habits. Multinomial logistic regression showed that poor blood glucose probability was associated with duration of diabetes mellitus, method of DM therapy, perceived behavior control and habits. Conclusion: The study findings reveal the important role of self-care behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, family support, and habits in blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

The film handles some happenings based on the story that a poor family sponges off a rich family. Junho Bong, a film director, has won the Palme d'Or in Cannes Film Festival and received a Academy Award for best picture, best original screen play, best international film and best director. The film has accomplished the cinematic achievements, but it seems that the implications the film aims to show might not be seriously appreciated to the public. The film has an unusual synopsis, which demonstrates that a deprived family is parasitic to a wealthy family. The storyline specifies how great the gap between the rich and the poor in Korea is. Accordingly, this article investigates some implications of the house, family, and society in the film .Consequently, three families (Kitaek's house, Park's luxury house, and maid's hidden basement) explicitly reveal distinctive social hierarchy. The common features found in two families are like this: the lower classes are willing to help one another but have no conscience and morality. The social implications in the film are closely associated with the class system based on the gap between the rich and the poor, the symbols of stone, and tragic ending. From the ending of the film, it is expected that the extreme social imbalance precedes the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

This study examines health and life satisfaction of the married female production workers(Mfpw). The data of 370 Mfpw in manufacturing sector in Taegu are collected by using questionares in August, 1995. Health scale measured by Todai Health Index is composed physical health and mental health. There are three satifsfaction areas-individual life satisfaction, family life satisfaction, and job satisfaction-in the overall life satisfaction scale. The findings of this study are as follows: 1) Mfpw’s total health conditions are poor. Especially physical health is worse than mental health. Physical health is influenced by age and purpose of attaining job, while mental health is influenced by purpose of attaining job. Mfpw who get the job for family financial needs have poor physical and mental health. 2) The overall life satisfaction level of Mfpw is lower than middle point : their family life satisfaction level is the heigest and their individual life satisfaction level is the lowest. Family income, purpose of attaining job and work place environment have effect on the level of overall life satisfaction. Mfpw who have the higher family income, get the job by non-economic motivations and work in good work place environment show the higher life satisfaction level.
The purpose of this study was to observe differences in peer competence by children's personality and to investigate the relationship between peer competence and characteristics of children from poor families. The subjects were 79 parents and their 4- to 6-year-old children at a kindergarten in Seoul. The instruments were Iannotti's facial drawings cards, vignettes, "roster and rating" the Family Environment Scale (FES) and the Family Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). The main results of this study were that girls from poor families had higher levels of peer competence than boys. There was a significant correlation between the peer competence of the children in poverty and family characteristics. The children's gender, knowledge of emotion, and mother's negatively dominant conduct were the factors that indicated children's behavior in peer competence. Family conflict and mother's emotional conduct did not relate to children's knowledge of emotion.
This study focuses on the problem of feminization of poverty that is formed within family relations. In order to approach this question, this study analyses the process of becoming poor through the life stories of ten woman are now heads of a household. There are differences among the study participants in the process of becoming a member of a low-income class. I have classified them into two groups depending on the routes they are led into the low-income class; one is the continuation of poverty group, and the other is the new members of the low-income class group. The continuation of poverty group is the case where they have been poor since their childhood and are still poor in their adulthood. The new members of the low-income class group is the case where you have become a low-income class sometime around divorce. The difference of the groups are related to the differences of the ways the power relationships work within a family. Women head of a household are prone to poverty because of the discrimination in formation, distribution and control of resources in their original family and their family formed by marriage. The norm of male breadwinner worked as a discrimination device. But this kind of discrimination device showed differences in their workings according to class. The continuation of poverty group experienced exclusion in the gendered responsibility of supporting the family and maintaining the family, whereas the other group experienced exclusion through the gendered nature of the distribution and control of resources. By showing that the presupposition of discussions on the poverty of woman head of a household is false, these findings challenge the existing view that as long as 'The Family' is maintained women will not be poor.
