  • This study was examed about leaching behavior in order to separate plasticizer selectively before dechlorination from flexible PVC material in alkali solutions at $80~120^{\circ}C$. The dechlorination of that was not almost occurred below $100^{\circ}C$. But the yield of elution of plasticizer was 100% above 5M NaOH. Therefore, by controlling alkali concentration and reaction temperature, it is possible to extract the plasticizer selectively without taking dechlorination.

  • Objectives: This study is to examine the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials in elementary school classrooms and libraries in Seoul, and to investigate phthalate contamination in indoor dust. Methods: PVC material was identified for building materials and furniture using portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Phthalates in dust samples (n=19) were extracted by ultrasonic extraction using cyclohexane and analyzed by GC-MS. Results: Diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were found in all collected dust samples (n=19), and diisonyl phthalate (DINP) was detected in all except for one sample (n=18). The concentration of DEHP (median: 2190 mg/kg) and DINP (2960 mg/kg) were higher than other compounds, suggesting that there are many products in the school that used these compounds. When comparing the phthalate concentration in the classroom (n=11) and library dust (n=8), the total concentration in the classroom (median: 10000 mg/kg) was higher than that in the library (8030 mg/kg). DEHP was the dominant compound in the library. The library is relatively more equipped with PVC furniture (n=83) and most floors are also identified as PVC material, suggesting that floors and furniture made of PVC materials are main sources of DEHP contamination. Conclusions: This study is a pilot survey for investigating phthalate contamination in elementary schools. As a result of the survey, phthalate contamination in elementary school was confirmed. However, further study requires risk assessment of children through analysis of phthalate metabolites in children based on sufficient number of samples and information about the site.

  • Objectives: Excluding in their homes, children spend most of their time at an elementary school, daycare center, and/or kindergarten. For educational or recreational purposes, they make use of many children's goods at these places. Some children's goods contain phthalates and heavy metals with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), so due to their physiological and behavioral characteristics children are exposed to high concentrations of phthalates and heavy metals. This study aims to measure PVC and heavy metals, which are harmful substances in children's goods which can have an effect on children's health. Methods: Six samples of children's goods were selected through cases of detected harmful substances and the results of previous research, including assembly blocks, model toys, household toys, bags, indoor play equipment, and floor mats. The selected items were measured using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and the presence and content of environmentally harmful substances such as PVC or heavy metals in the materials of children's goods were examined. Results: The highest detection rate for PVC was observed in floor mats, and bags and indoor play equipment were higher than other goods in this regard. The highest detection rate for heavy metals was found in bags, followed by indoor play equipment, assembly blocks, household toys, model toys and floor mats. Except for bags containing heavy metals, five goods showed the highest level of Pb compared to other heavy metals. Floor mats contained the highest level of Pb, Cr, and Cu among all goods. Conclusion: Many children's goods contain PVC and heavy metals, and high levels of heavy metals have been detected in some goods. It is necessary to manage children's goods to support their health.

  • Bacterial infection is one of the most common and universal cause of disease spreading associated with medical and surgical environment. Antimicrobial function of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will be useful for making hygienic environments. Here, we synthesized the PVC composite by the addition of inorganic bacteriocide containing silver, zinc and zeolite. And we investigated the growth inhibition rate for Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae which were analyzed in the presence of PVC composite with different doses of inorganic bacteriocide (1~15 wt%). Bacterial proliferation was significantly inhibited by 3 wt% of inorganic bacteriocide containing PVC composite. And we found the inhibition of bacterial biofilm formation by 5 wt% of inorganic bacteriocide containing PVC composite by the observation of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our data suggested that the antimicrobial effect of inorganic bacteriocide was caused by disturbing the bacterial biofilm formation.

  • PVC(polyvinyl chloride) powder were mixed with EAF(Electric Arc Furnace) dust and made as pellets. In order to recover the hydrochloride emitted from pyrolysis of PVC and the valuable metals in dust through making chlorides, pellets were roasted at $300 ^{\circ}C$ and investigated about the generation of chlorides. Two dust samples were collected at I steel making Co. and P Co. (called I dust and P dust respectively), which were mainly composed of zincite and franklinite. It was confirmed that about 50% of Zn in I dust and 48% of Zn in P dust compose zincite. The emission of HCl gas was completed in 15 min at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and the HCl mostly reacted with dust and made chlorides under 20% PVC mixed ratio. Because the reaction of HCl with zincite was faster than with franklinit, when generation and volatilization of ferric chloride is not allowed, the equivalent PVC powder mixed ratio in pellet depended on the amount of zincite in dust.

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/gypsum Polymer blend materials were prepared by melt blending of PVC with gypsum and additives. Effect of gypsum content on the properties of PVC/gypsum Polymer blend material was studied by investigating physico-mechanical properties, thermal properties and morphology development. It was found that the replacement of gypsum for methylene-butadiene-sarene (MBS) component in PVC/gypsum polymer blend material enhanced the tensile strength, but gradually decreased its impact strength. Besides, with the increase of gypsum content, the elongation at break of material gradually decreased. The Presence of the different gypsum contents made a shift of g1ass transition temperature and increased the thermal stability as well as the processing temperature range of polymer blends. The observation of morphology, the results of the physico-mechanical properties and thermal properties proved simultaneously that PVC/gypsum Polymer blend material with the gypsum content of 22.56 wt.% reached the optimum results among five kinds of PVC/gypsum Polymer blend materials investigated.

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration membrane was prepared by blending 12 wt.% of PVC in N, N-dimethylacetimide (DMAc) with polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) as an additive. The influence of PEG400 concentration on the PVC membrane morphology, permeability, fouling and rejection were investigated. Fouling and rejection of the PVC membrane were characterized by dextran T-100 filtration. The results showed that membrane water flux was increased up to $682Lm^{-2}h^{-1}$ when 28 wt.% of PEG400 was added into the PVC membrane solution. The best membrane performance with a low fouling and a high selectivity was achieved by adding 12 wt.% concentration of PEG400, which resulted in 90% rejection of dextran and 90% of flux recovery ratio. At further addition of PEG400 concentration, irreversible fouling was starting to increase. A 90% of irreversible fouling was formed in the PVC membrane when more than 22 wt.% of PEG400 is added.

  • Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) was chemically modified, and used for ultrafiltration to analyze the performance. Non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method was used to prepare membranes. The neat PVC membrane was casted and used as a control membrane. Modified membrane was prepared by reacting PVC with ethanolamine (EA) in the casting solution (labeled as CM-PVC). Pure water permeability (PWP) was evaluated by measuring pure water flux. Humic acid was used as model foulant solute to analyze flux and rejection ability of membranes. Flux and rejection data of neat and modified membranes were compared to prove the improvement in the filtration performance. The experimental results showed that for PVC and CM-PVC, PWP was calculated to be ~64 and ${\sim}143L/m^2{\cdot}h$, respectively, and the rejection of humic acid was found to be 98% and 100%, respectively. TGA was carried out to analyze the effect of chemical modification on the thermal stability of polymer. FT-IR analysis was another characterization technique used for the comparative study.

  • PVC is a kind of electric insulation polymer. But we get some deteriorations in electrical characteristics of the PVC, when it is used on the radioactive field. In order to find out the cause of the deterioration, we investigate the surface-resistance, volume-resistance, dielectric constant and dielectric loss angle of the soft and hard PVC which is irradiated by the Co$^{60}$ .gamma. radioactivity. From the experiment, we can conclude the followings 1. Radio-activity proof characteristic in the soft PVC is stronger than in the hard PVC. 2. The resistance of PVC which is irradiated by the radio-activity decrease exponentially. 3. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss angle of PVC irradiated by Co$^{60}$ .gamma.ray reach maximum value in first few time.

  • 10, 20, 30, and 40% of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were added to nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) to modify the latter. The NBR/PVC composites containing pure NBR were synthesized to investigate properties, such as crosslinking density, hardness, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, heat resistance, solvent resistance, and filler dispersion. The experimental result revealed a decrease in crosslinking density and heat resistance with increase in the PVC content. In contrast, addition of PVC to NBR resulted in enhancement of hardness, tensile strength, solvent resistance, and filler dispersion.
