In this study, we proposed a newly designed sulfuric acid transfer system for the sulfur-iodine (SI) thermochemical cycle. The proposed sulfuric acid transfer system was evaluated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for investigating thermodynamic/hydrodynamic characteristics and material properties. This analysis was conducted to obtain reliable continuous operation parameters; in particular, a thermal analysis was performed on the bellows box and bellows at amplitudes and various frequencies (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 Hz). However, the high temperatures and strongly corrosive operating conditions of the current sulfuric acid system present challenges with respect to the structural materials of the transfer system. To resolve this issue, we designed a novel transfer system using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, $Teflon^{(R)}$) as a bellows material for the transfer of sulfuric acid. We also carried out a CFD analysis of the design. The CFD results indicated that the maximum applicable temperature of PTFE is about 533 K ($260^{\circ}C$), even though its melting point is around 600 K. This result implies that the PTFE is a potential material for the sulfuric acid transfer system. The CFD simulations also confirmed that the sulfuric acid transfer system was designed properly for this particular investigation.
Electrodes using for the anode electrode of direct methanol fuel cell with Pt/C and Pt/Ru/C catalyst were prepared and characterized by SEM, TEM, thermal analysis and electrochemical analysis. The half cell tests were carried out with 1 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte and 1 M $CH_3OH$ in order to evaluate the electrode performance. The employed electrochemical methods were cyclic vol-tammetry and potentiodynamic polarization experiments. It was found that 20 w% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in catalyst showed the best performance due to the best platinum utilization on PTFE-containing catalyst layer. It was found that Pt/Ru/C binary catalyst inhibited the poisoning of anode electrode showing improved performance compared to the Pt/C catalyst by the adsorption of oxygen containing species on the electrode surface at same time. The apparent activation energy for methanol oxidation on the Pt/Ru/C and Pt/C catalyst layer was 11.60 kJ/mol and 26.85 kJ/mol, respectively.
Congenital interruption of the inferior vena cava (IVC) can lead to secondary hepatic congestion, portal hypertension, and liver cirrhosis. A 49-year-old woman was admitted to the gynecology department with symptoms of menorrhalgia, known uterine myoma, and anemia. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and venography performed at our hospital revealed congenital interruption of the IVC. The patient underwent retrohepatic cavoatrial bypass surgery with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) 16-mm ringed graft via posterolateral thoracotomy, and recovered without major complications. A retroperitoneal approach via posterolateral thoracotomy provides appropriate visualization during dorsal cavoatrial bypass in treating patients with congenital interruption of IVC.

The Polyethylene (PE), Polystyrene (PS) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface modification was investigated by hydrogen io assisted reaction (H-IAR) in oxygen environment. The IAR is a kind of surface modification techniques using ion beam irradiation in reactive gas environment. The energy of hydrogen ion beam was fixed at 1keV, io dose was varied from 5$\times$1014 to 1$\times$1017 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and amount of oxygen blowing gas was fixed 4ml/min. Wettability was measured by water contact angles measurement, and the surface functionality was analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The contact angle of water on PE modified by argon ion beam only decrease from 95$^{\circ}$ to 52$^{\circ}$, and surface energy was not changed significantly. But, the contact angle using hydrogen ion beam with flowing 4ml/min oxygen stiffly decreased to 8$^{\circ}$ and surface energy to 65 ergs/cm. In case of PS, the contact angle and surface energy changes were similar results of PE, but the contact angle of PTEE samples decreased with ion dose up to 1$\times$1015 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$, increased at higher dose, and finally increased to the extent that no wetting was appeared at 1$\times$1017 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. These results must be due to the hydrogen ion beam that cleans the surface removing the impurities on polymer surfaces, then hydrogen ion beam was activated with C-H bonding to make some functional groups in order to react with the oxygen gases. Finally, unstable polymer surface can be changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic formation such as C-O and C=O that were confirmed by the XPS analysis, conclusionally, the ion assisted reaction is very effective tools to attach reactive ion species to form functional groups on C-C bond chains of PE, PS and PTFE.
This experimental study is aimed at evaluating the hydrodynamic performance of newly designed self-expandable graft stents under steady flow condition. Two graft stents with different coating materials and a bare TiNi metallic stent for comparison test were used in the experiment. Pressure variation and velocity distribution at the upstream and downstream of the stents were measured at flow rates of 5, 10, and 15 l/min, respectively. Pressure loss due to insertion of the stent increased with increasing flow rate exponentially as expected. At a flow rate of 15 l/min, pressure loss of Polyure-thane(PU)-coated graft stent was 6 times higher than that of TiNi metallic stent, while the pressure loss of a porous Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)-coated graft stent was comparable to a bare TiNi metallic stent. Velocity profiles of the porous PTFE-coated graft stent were similar to those of a bare TiNi metallic stent regardless of flow rate. Furthermore, the velocity profile of PU-coated graft stent revealed an asymmetrical and relatively low central velocity at a higher flow rate than 10 1/min, expecially, where the effects resulted in increases of wall shear stress and normal stress. The worse hydrodynamic behavior of PU-coated graft stent than the other two stents might be attributed to formation of folds due to poor flexibility of coated material when inserting the graft stent into the pipe with a more smaller size, which later gave rise non-symmetry of flow area, increase of surface roughness and jet flow via the crevice between the stent and cylinder wall.
Background: A compact passive oxide layer can grow on tantalum (Ta). It has been reported that this oxide layer can facilitate bone ingrowth in vivo though the development of bone-like apatite, which promotes hard and soft tissue adhesion. Thus, Ta surface treatment on facial implant materials may improve the tissue response, which could result in less fibrotic encapsulation and make the implant more stable on the bone surface. The purposes of this study were to verify whether surface treatment of facial implant materials using Ta can improve the biohistobiological response and to determine the possibility of potential clinical applications. Methods: Two different and commonly used implant materials, silicone and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), were treated via Ta ion implantation using a Ta sputtering gun. Ta-treated samples were compared with untreated samples using in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Osteoblast (MG-63) and fibroblast (NIH3T3) cell viability with the Ta-treated implant material was assessed, and the tissue response was observed by placing the implants over the rat calvarium (n = 48) for two different lengths of time. Foreign body and inflammatory reactions were observed, and soft tissue thickness between the calvarium and the implant as well as the bone response was measured. Results: The treatment of facial implant materials using Ta showed a tendency toward increased fibroblast and osteoblast viability, although this result was not statistically significant. During the in vivo study, both Ta-treated and untreated implants showed similar foreign body reactions. However, the Ta-treated implant materials (silicone and ePTFE) showed a tendency toward better histological features: lower soft tissue thickness between the implant and the underlying calvarium as well as an increase in new bone activity. Conclusion: Ta surface treatment using ion implantation on silicone and ePTFE facial implant materials showed the possibility of reducing soft tissue intervention between the calvarium and the implant to make the implant more stable on the bone surface. Although no statistically significant improvement was observed, Ta treatment revealed a tendency toward an improved biohistological response of silicone and ePTFE facial implants. Conclusively, tantalum treatment is beneficial and has the potential for clinical applications.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate appropriate contrast reference values (CRVs) by comparing the contrast in phantom and clinical images. Materials and Methods: Phantom contrast was measured using two methods: (1) counting the number of visible pits of different depths in an aluminum plate, and (2) obtaining the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for 5 tissue-equivalent materials (porcelain, aluminum, polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE], polyoxymethylene [POM], and polymethylmethacrylate [PMMA]). Four panoramic radiographs of the contrast phantom, embedded in the 4 different regions of the arch-form stand, and 1 real skull phantom image were obtained, post-processed, and compared. The clinical image quality evaluation chart was used to obtain the cut-off values of the phantom CRV corresponding to the criterion of being adequate for diagnosis. Results: The CRVs were obtained using 4 aluminum pits in the incisor and premolar region, 5 aluminum pits in the molar region, and 2 aluminum pits in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region. The CRVs obtained based on the CNR measured in the anterior region were: porcelain, 13.95; aluminum, 9.68; PTFE, 6.71; and POM, 1.79. The corresponding values in the premolar region were: porcelain, 14.22; aluminum, 8.82; PTFE, 5.95; and POM, 2.30. In the molar region, the following values were obtained: porcelain, 7.40; aluminum, 3.68; PTFE, 1.27; and POM, - 0.18. The CRVs for the TMJ region were: porcelain, 3.60; aluminum, 2.04; PTFE, 0.48; and POM, - 0.43. Conclusion: CRVs were determined for each part of the jaw using the CNR value and the number of pits observed in phantom images.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of negatively electric field on bone healing in rabbit segmental long bone defects using negatively charged PTFE membrane. Ten millimeter segmental defects in the rabbit radius were used as the experimental model. After membranes were then charge injected using a corona-charging apparatus, the left defects were covered with non charged PTFE membranes as control groups, whereas the right defect was covered with negatively charged PTFE membranes as test group. The animals were divided into 4 groups of 2 rabbits each, and sacrificed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Histomorphometric analysis showed a more newly formed bone in negatively charged membrane at early healing period. At 2 weeks, the proportion of new bone formation to total defect area was 0.32% in control group, 1.10% in experimental group. At 4 weeks, the proportion of new bone formation to total defect area was 6.86% in control, and 13.75% in experimental. At 6 and 8 weeks, no obvious difference was found between the two groups but newly formed bone in test groups were slightly more than that in control groups. In conclusion, negatively charged membranes showed more newly bone tissue than noncharged membranes at an early healing period. Although the number of samples was small, this study showed that the combination of negatively electrical stimulation and P1FE membrane may be of value in long bone healing.

Porous matrices for PAFC were prepared with chemically synthesized polyaniline powders. Phosphoric acid doped polyaniline showed decreasing electric conductivities as the temperature increased. Above $100^{\circ}C$, it showed negligible conductivities. It was stable in phosphoric acid up to $250^{\circ}C$. SiC powders or SiC whiskers were added to polyaniline to decrease the thermal expansion of polyaniline. 10% of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) was also added as a binder. The bubble pressures and wettabilities of matrices were investigated and compared with the porosities measured by porosimeter. Based on these data, the optimum manufacturing condition was determined. The bubble pressure of the matrix made by adding 25w/o SiC whiskers was 345mmHg, the wettability was 235w/o, and the porosity was 83%. In the unit cell operation, the performances of polyaniline matrices were as good as those of SiC matrices. This result suggested that polyaniline can be a possible candidate for the matrix material of PAFC.
In this work, we have seen the effect of hole-transporting layer in organic light-emitting diodes using N,N'-biphenyl-N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine(TPD) and N,N'-biphenyl-N,N'-bis-(1-naphenyl)-[l,l'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine(NPB). NPB is regarded as a better hole trans porting material than TPD, since it has a higher glass transition temperature($T_g$). And current-voltage, luminance-voltage and external quantum efficiency of device were measured with the thickness variation of buffer layer using copper phathalocyanine(CuPc) am polytetrafluoroethylene (PTEE) at room temperature. We have obtained an improvement of External quantum efficiency when the CuPc 30[nm] and PTFE 1.0[nm] is used.
