This study presents the nonlinear finite element analysis to predict the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams shear-strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer laminates (FRP). In this paper, modeling concept for the FRP is introduced to enable the use of finite element methods for the shear analysis of RC beams shear-strengthened with FRP composites. The numerical techniques are used to represent the FRP composite, bond properties between the FRP and the concrete, and the RC beams. According to the proposed modeling methods, a finite element analysis is performed using a two-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis program, VecTor2, based on the Disturbed Stress Field Model (DSFM). To verify the application of the DSFM for the prediction of the behavior of the shear-critical beams strengthened with FRP composites in shear, a detailed comparison between experimental and numerical results for the response of the RC beams is carried out.
In the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the development of a reinforced membrane with improved durability by a support is actively in progress in Korea. In this study, the initial performance and characteristics of four types of reinforced membranes were compared. Reinforced membranes with higher amounts of C-F chains in the polymer membrane showed lower water diffusion coefficients due to the hydrophobicity of the C-F chains. The thicker the polymer membrane, the more the hydrogen permeability decreased and the higher the OCV. Membrane with short resistance below 1.5 Ωcm2 showed OCV below 0.9 V and the lowest performance, so short resistance should be above 3.0 Ωcm2. Compared with the current standard membrane, there was a similar domestic membrane, which could confirm the possibility of localization of PEMFC polymer membrane.

In this study, the tensile behavior of concrete specimens reinforced with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), BFRP (Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer), and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars was experimentally analyzed. The tensile strength of the FRP bars is appeared to be similar to the design strength, but the elastic modulus was somewhat lower. Additionally, the specimens for tension stiffening effect were manufacured using OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with dimensions of 150(W)×150(B)×1000(H) mm. The crack spacing of specimens was most significant for GFRP reinforcement bars, which have a lower elastic modulus and a smoother surface, while BFRP and CFRP bars, with somewhat rougher surfaces and higher elastic moduli, showed similar crack spacings. In the load-strain relationship, GFRP bars exhibited a relatively abrupt behavior after cracking, whereas BFRP and CFRP bars showed a more stable behavior after the cracking phase, maintaining a certain level of tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening index was somewhat smaller as the diameter increased, and GFRP, compared to BFRP, showed a higher tension stiffening index.

Carbon nanotube(CNT)-reinforced poly(ethylene-co-ethyl acrylate)(EEA) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing with a Haake internal mixer. The CNT loading was vaned from 0 to 20 wt%. The changes m CNT dispersion and shape were investigated with FE-SEM observation with and without the Tensile strain of 40%. The CNT was protruded over the fracture surface upon Tensile strain, which is a very interesting behavior.

Cladding that finishes the exterior of a building could enhance the value of the building, and shape control is an important factor. With the recent development of 3D printing, cementitious claddings were printed by 3D printer in China, U.S.A and elsewhere. On the other hand, the structural safety of the exterior panel should be examined, as casualties occur when the exterior panel fails due to typhoon or impact. Cement-based cladding is reinforced by wire mesh to improve safety. Introducing 3D printing composite system with polymer and cement, makes it possible to produce claddings fast and accurate. Prior to the development of 3D printing cementitious cladding, the major parameters influencing the optimal shape were identified based on structural performance. The wind load, joint, and bond behavior between polymer and cement were considered. Polymer laminate shape, order, and thickness were variables, and finite element analysis was performed.
In recent years, the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites has increased because of their unique features. They have been used widely in the aircraft and space industries, medical and sporting goods and automotive industries. Thanks to their beneficial and various advantages over traditional materials such as high strength, high rigidity, low weight, corrosion resistance, low maintenance cost, aesthetic appearance and easy demountable or moveable construction. In this paper, it is aimed to determine and compare the geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis results of footbridges using steel and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite (GFRP) materials. For this purpose, Halgavor suspension footbridge is selected as numerical examples. The analyses are performed using three identical footbridges, first constructed from steel, second built only with GFRP material and third made of steel- GFRP material, under static and dynamic loadings using finite element method. In the finite element modeling and analyses, SAP2000 program is used. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta criterion. The numerical results have indicated that the responses of the three bridges are different and that the response values obtained for the GFRP composite bridge are quite less compared to the steel bridge. It is understood that GFRP material is more useful than the steel for the footbridges.
The mechanical behavior of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer columns is affected by various factors including concrete strength, stiffness of tube, end confinement effect, and slenderness ratio of members. In this research the behavior of slender columns was examined both experimentally and analytically. Experimental works include 1) compression test with 30cm long glass fiber composite columns under different end confinement conditions, 2) uni-axial compression test for 7 slender columns, which have various slenderness ratios. Short-length stocky columns gave high strength and ductility revealing high confinement action of FRP tubes. The strength increment and strain change were examined under different end confinement conditions. With slender columns, failure strengths, confinement effects, and stress-strains relations were examined. Through analytical work, effective length was computed and it was compared with the amount of reduction in column strength, which is required to predict design strength with slender specimens. This study shows the feasibility of slender concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer composite columns.

In recent years, fiber reinforced polymer plastic composites are readily available in the construction industry. Fiber reinforced polymer composite has many advantages such as high specific strength and high specific stiffness, high corrosion resistance, light-weight, magnetic transparency, etc. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the flexural behavior of flange strengthened I-shape pultruded fiber reinforced polymer plastic (PFRP) member using carbon fiber sheet (CFRP sheet). Test variable is consisted of the number of layers of strengthening CFRP sheet from 0 to 3. From the experimental results, flexural strengthening effect of flange strengthened I-shape PFRP member using CFRP sheet is evaluated and it was found that 2 layers of strengthening CFRP sheet are appropriate considering efficiency and workability.

Combat vehicles are frequently maneuvered in battlefields when the lives of combatants are being threatened. These vehicles are important elements that influence the consequences of a battle. Their armor must be lightweight and provide excellent protection to ensure successful operations. Ceramic composite armor has recently been developed by many countries to fulfill these requirements. We reviewed previous research to determine an effective armor design, and then fabricated a composite armor structure using $Al_2O_3$ and glass fiber-reinforced polymer. Specimens were manufactured under controlled conditions using different backing plate thicknesses and bonding methods for the ceramic layer and the backing plate. The penetration of an armor-piercing bullet was evaluated from ballistic protection tests. The bonding method between the ceramic layer and the fiber-reinforced polymer influenced the ballistic protection performance. A bonding layer using rubber provided the best protection.
This paper introduces new specimens of Steel-Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer composite developed in accordance with standard test method and definition for mechanical testing of steel (ASTM-A370). The main purpose of this research is to study the behaviour of steel-CFRP composite specimen under uniaxial tension to use it in beams in lieu of traditional steel bar reinforcement. Eighteen specimens were prepared and divided into six groups, depending upon the number of the layers of CFRP. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to determine yield strength and ultimate strength of specimens. Test results showed that the stress-strain curve of the composite specimen was bilinear prior to the fracture of CFRP laminate. The tested composite specimens displayed a large difference in strength with remarkable ductility. The ultimate load for Steel-Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer composite specimens was found using the model proposed by Wu et al. (2010) and nonlinear FE analysis. The ultimate loads obtained from FE analysis are found to be in good agreement with experimental ones. However, ultimate loads obtained applying Wu model are significantly different from experimental/FE ones. This suggested modification of Wu model. Modified Wu's model which gives a better estimate for the ultimate load of Steel-Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (SCFRP) composite specimen is presented in this paper.
