  • Flexible sheets consisting of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are newly prepared varying the composition (CNT 20-25 wt.%) for use as a current collector of supercapacitor electrodes. The as-prepared CNT/NBR is electrodeposited with aniline using potentiodynamic cyclic voltammetry to yield a polyaniline (PANI)/CNT/NBR composite electrode. It is confirmed that the electrical conductivity of CNT/NBR current collector can be enhanced as the content of CNT increases. Cyclic voltammetry result shows that the sample of PANI/CNT(25 wt.%)/NBR composite achieves a maximum specific capacitance ($134.9\;F\;g^{-1}$) at $5\;mV\;s^{-1}$. Such supercapacitor application is possibly originated from the synergistic effects consisting of higher polarity of nitrile groups in NBR, conducting pathway of CNT, and electroactive property of PANI.

  • Polyaniline-yttrium trioxide (PAni-$Y_2O_3$) composites were synthesized by the in-situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of $Y_2O_3$ The composite formation and structural changes in these composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The direct current (DC) electrical conductivity of the order of $0.51{\times}10^{-2}\;S\;cm^{-1}-0.283\;S\;cm^{-1}$ in the temperature range 300 K-473 K indicates semiconducting behavior of the composites. Room temperature AC conductivity and dielectric response of the composites were studied in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 1 MHz. The variation of AC conductivity with frequency obeyed the power law, which decreased with increasing weight percentage (wt %) of $Y_2O_3$. Studies on dielectric properties shows the relaxation contribution coupled by electrode polarization effect. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss in these composites depend on the content of $Y_2O_3$ with a percolation threshold at 20 wt % of $Y_2O_3$ in PAni. Electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the composites in the frequency range 100 Hz to 2 GHz was in the practically useful range of -12.2 dB to -17.2 dB. The observed electrical and shielding properties were attributed to the interaction of $Y_2O_3$ particles with the PAni molecular chains.

  • In this paper, we report a modified technique for the production of oriented continuous nanofibers instead of non-woven mats using a rapidly rotating collection device. We are interested in retaining physical properties such as electrical conductivity of fiber bundles in their axial direction. The experiments were performed using polyethylene oxide (PEO) and its blend with polyaniline (PANI). According to the results, a typical fiber with a uniform diameter of about 100 nanometer was produced. The fibers from the PEO/ CHCl$_3$ solution show high crystallinity and good orientation whereas the fibers from the blend solution of PEO/PANI/m-cresol and CHCl$_3$ show no preferred orientation. However, the fibers of the blend exhibit high electrical conductivity of 33 S/cm for a fiber bundle at a PANI level of 50 %.

  • The paper describes the preparation and characterization of conductive polyaniline-modified polymers by growing of aniline onto functionalized poly(styrene-co-p-methylstyrene) [P(St-co-MSt)]. For this purpose, P(St-co-MSt) was synthesized via nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) and then N-boromosuccinimide was used for introduction of bromine to the benzylic positions of copolymer. Afterwards, 1,4-phenylenediamine was linked to the brominated P(St-co-MSt) and functionalized copolymer $[P(St-co-MSt)-NH_2]$ was prepared. The graft copolymerization of aniline monomers onto functionalized P(St-co-MSt) was initiated by oxidized phenylamine groups after addition of ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS), and p-toluenesulfonic acid-doped PANI was chemically grafted onto P(St-co-MSt) via oxidation polymerization. The obtained terpolymer was studied by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and its thermal behaviour were examined by DSC and TGA analyses. The conductivity of terpolymer was measured by four-point probe method and electroactivity was measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The solubility of P(St-co-MSt)-g-PANI was examined in common organic solvents.

  • To enhance the stability of dispersed polyaniline (PANI) particles in a silicone oil system, a nonionic surfactant was adopted, and its effect on the electrorheological (ER) performance was investigated under an applied electric field. In the presence of a nonionic surfactant, the PANI based ER fluid exhibited not only an improved sedimentation stability based on the estimated sedimentation ratio but also an enhanced maximum yield stress behavior. Furthermore, the surfactant added ER suspension was applied to an ER damper system, and its damping performance was compared with the ER suspension without a surfactant.

  • The presence of a porous Si layer(PSL) formed on the surface of crystalline silicon by electrochemical etclling in HF solution is found to enhance the stability of n-Si photoanodes, but porous n-Si thus formed is still liable to corrode upon exposure to excitation light. To improve the stability of the porous n-Si electrodes and to reduce the photo-induced corrosion, we have examined the PEC behavior of porous n-Si modified with polyaniline(PANI) and 3 nm thick layer of Au. Comparisons were made between Au/PSL and PANl/Au/PSL photoelectrodes.

  • Temperature and frequency dependent AC conductivity behavior has been studied for the chemically synthesized polyaniline-polymannuronate (PANI-PM) composites. The temperature (300 - 500 K) and frequency (100 - $10^6$ Hz) dependent AC conductivity suggests evidence for the transport mechanism in PANI-PM composites. The frequency dependence of AC conductivity has been investigated by the power law. The frequency exponent (s) is determined, and the data suggest that s decreases with temperature. The variation of s with temperature suggests that AC conduction is due to the correlated barrier hopping.

  • In this study, Nafion membrane was modified to prevent methanol crossover by layer-by-layer self assembly using polyaniline (PANi) as a polycation and sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) as a polyanion onto the Nafion surface. Since PANi and SPES possess thermal and chemical stability and rigid backbone, their layer-by-layer self-assembled films on the Nafion are expected to reduce methanol permeability and to increase mechanical stability. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy verified a linear build-up of the multilayers of PANi and SPES. We found that the thickness per bilayer was about 10 nm by TEM measurement. Although modified Nafion membrane exhibited 15% decrease of proton conductivity, it reduceded 67% of methanol permeability compared to that of the pristine Nafion membrane, resulting in 2.5 times larger selectivity. At the performance test of the fuel cell using 5M methanol as a fuel, the modified Nafion membrane showed 2.4 times higher maximum power density at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1.4 times larger at $60^{\circ}C$ than the pristine Nafion.

  • The electrical properties of Ti/p-type InP Schottky diodes with and without polyaniline (PANI) interlayer was investigated using current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. The barrier height of Ti/p-type InP Schottky diode with PANI interlayer was higher than that of the conventional Ti/p-type InP Schottky diode, implying that the organic interlayer influenced the space-charge region of the Ti/p-type InP Schottky junction. At higher voltages, the current transport was dominated by the trap free space-charge-limited current and trap-filled space-charge-limited current in Ti/p-type InP Schottky diode without and with PANI interlayer, respectively. The domination of trap filled space-charge-limited current in Ti/p-type InP Schottky diode with PANI interlayer could be associated with the traps originated from structural defects prevailing in organic PANI interlayer.

  • The electrorheological(ER) behavior of hollow polyaniline(PANI) sebacate suspension in silicone oil was investigated by varying the electric fields and shear rates, respectively. The hollow PANI sebacate susepnsion acted as a typical Bingham fluid caused by the polarizability of an amide polar group and showed shear yield stress due to the formation of chains upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the hollow PANI sebacate suspension exhibited an electric field power of 1.24. On the basis of the experimental results, the newly synthesized hollow PANI sebacate suspension was found to be an anhydrous ER fluid.
