Simple Formation of Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) Pattern on the Hydrophobic Substrate for the Control of Cell Adhesion via a Selective Ion Irradiation

  • In this study, the simple preparation of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)-patterned substrate via a selective ion irradiation was investigated to manipulate cell adhesion. PSS thin films spin-coated onto the hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) was patterned through masked 150 keV proton irradiation followed by developing with deionized water. The characteristics of the resulting PSS-patterned surfaces were investigated by using microscope, surface profiler, FT-IR, XPS, and contact angle analyzer. These analytical results revealed that the resolved $100{\mu}m$ PSS patterns were formed on the hydrophobic PS surface above the fluence of $1{\times}10^{15}ions\;cm^{-2}$ and the chemical structure, composition, and wettability of the PSS patterns were dependant on a fluence. Moreover, the results of the in-vitro cell culture and proliferation assay exhibited that H1299 cells preferentially adhered and proliferated onto the more hydrophilic PSS part of the PSS-patterned PS and the well-aligned cell patterns was formed on the PSS-patterned PS particularly at the fluence of $1{\times}10^{15}ions\;cm^{-2}$.

  • The interactions of water soluble polymers with dye are studied by ultrafiltration using a molecular weight cut off of 10 KDa regenerated cellulose ultrafiltration membrane. Two water-soluble polymers, namely Poly (Sodium-4 Styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) were selected for this study. The effects of process parameters, such as, polyelectrolyte concentrations, transmembrane pressure, ionic strength and pH of solution on dye retention and permeation flux were examined. PSS enhanced ultrafiltration achieved dye retention as high as 99% as a result of complexation between polyanion containing aromatic groups and cationic dye. This result was confirmed by the red shift. The retention of dye decreases as the salt concentration increases, a high retention was obtained at pH above 4. However, in case of PVA, relatively low retention (50%) was observed. Ionic strength and pH has no significant effect on the removal of MB. The permeate flux depended slightly on polyelectrolytes concentrations, transmembrane pressure, salt concentration and pH.

Preparation and Electrochemical Properties of LiFePO4-PSS Composite Cathode for Lithium-ion Batteries

  • In this study, we prepared $LiFePO_4$- poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) composite by the hydrothermal method and ball-milling process. Different wt% PSS were added to $LiFePO_4$. The cathode electrodes were made from mixtures of $LiFePO_4$-PSS: SP-270: PVDF in a weighting ratio of 70%: 25%: 5%. $LiFePO_4$-PSS powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical properties of $LiFePO_4$-PSS/Li batteries were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, charge/discharge tests, and AC impedance spectroscopy. A Li/$LiFePO_4$-PSS battery with 4.75 wt% PSS shows the best electrochemical properties, with a discharge capacity of 128 mAh/g.

  • The electrical properties of an inorganic/organic heterojunction has been investigated by spin coating the p-type polymer poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) on an n-type gallium doping zinc oxide (GZO) film. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the fabricated heterojunction diodes have a good rectifying characteristics. The barrier height is calculated 0.8 eV.

  • The influence of oxygen plasma and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) treatment of $SiO_2$ on the patterning of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is presented. A significant difference in surface energies between plasma treated and OTS treated $SiO_2$ was noted. Such heterogeneous surface energy guides PEDOT:PSS to wet and spread on the wettable region and to dewet and retract from other regions.

  • We synthesized a new composite of poly sodium 4-styrenesulfonate intercalated graphene oxide for energy storage devices by controlling oxidation time in the synthesis of graphite oxide. Specific capacitance was improved from 20 F/g of the previous composites to 88 F/g of the new composite at the current density of 0.3 A/g. The capacitance retention was 94% after 3000 cycles, indicating that the new composites of high cyclic stability, prominent performance as electric double layer capacitor, and even low resistance could be an excellent carbon based electrode for further energy storage devices.

  • 자유 라디칼 중합법으로 친 이산화탄소성 단량체인 퍼플로로데실메타크릴레이트(FDMA)와 산에 불안정한 단량체인 tert-부틸메타크릴레이트(TBMA)로 구성된 랜덤 공중합체를 합성하였다. 합성된 공중합체의 이산화탄소에 대한 용해도 특성 및 365 nm 노광에서의 포토레지스트 감도 특성에 관하여 조사하였다. 또한, 랜덤 공중합체를 이용하여 형성된 패턴을 플라즈마 에칭을 통해 전도성 고분자인 poly(styrenesulfonate): poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PSS : PEDOT)에 전사하여 미크론크기의 PSS : PEDOT 패턴을 제조할 수 있었다.

  • 유리화탄소전극 위에 탄소나노튜브(CNT), 전하전달체(CTC), 글루코스 산화효소(GOx), 폴리이온복합체(PIC, poly-L-lysine hydrobromiderhk과 poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) 혼합물)를 순차적으로 도포하여 글루코스/산소 바이오전지용 효소전극을 제조하였다. 또한, CNT, bilirubin oxidase (BOD), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), 그리고 PIC 등의 층으로 제조한 전극을 바이오캐쏘드로 사용하여 바이오전지를 제조하였다. CNT와 CTC가 전극의 성능에 미치는 영향을 조사하였으며, 글루코스농도 5, 20, 200 mM에서 각각 3.6, 10.1, $46.5{\mu}W/cm^2$의 최대전력밀도를 나타내었으며, 본 연구에서 제시한 전극이 바이오전지 및 바이오센서의 개발에 활용될 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다.

전도성 고분자 박막을 이용한 ITO 투명 전극 필름의 열성형 안정성 향상 연구 (The Enhanced Thermoforming Stability of ITO Transparent Electrode Film by Using the Conducting Polymer Thin-Film)

  • ITO 투명 전극 필름은 디스플레이, 전기 자동차 등 산업 전 범위에서 널리 사용되는 전자 재료이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 indium tin oxide (ITO) 필름의 열성형 안정성을 향상시키기 위하여 Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) 전도성 고분자 코팅 용액 조성을 결정하였다. 1000 S/cm의 고 전도성을 보이는 PEDOT:PSS 용액에 끓는점이 각기 다른 4가지 종류의 용매를 희석하였고, 코팅 전 후 면저항 변화를 분석하였다. 또한 380~800 nm 영역의 광 투과율 분석 및 Raman 스펙트럼 분석을 통하여 PEDOT:PSS 박막이 코팅된 ITO 투명 전극의 전기적 특성 결정 메커니즘을 규명하였다. 230℃ 열성형 공정 결과 ITO 필름은 113% 연신 상태에서 이미 전기 전도성을 읽었지만, ethylene glycol을 희석 용매로 사용하여 얻어진 전도성 고분자 박막이 적용된 ITO 필름은 126% 고 연신 상태에서도 초기 60 Ω/sq 면저항을 246 Ω/sq로 유지하는 우수한 전기 전도성을 보였다.

Precursor and Substituent Effects on the Alternate Adsorption of Polycation and Anionic Dyes as Studied by Second Harmonic Generation and Absorption Spectroscopies

  • An alternately assembled polycation-anionic dye film was prepared on a precursor assembly of poly(allylamine)hydrochloride (PAH) and poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS) or of poly (djallyldimethyl)ammonium chloride (PDDA) and PSS. The (PAH/PSS) precursor assembly gave better adsorptivity to the anionic dye than the (PDDA/PSS) one. Four kinds of anionic dyes (EB-T, AR-17 AR-18, AR-27) with different numbers of sulfonate substituents were compared. The extent of dye assembling was higher for the dye with a smaller number of sufonate substituents. Second harmonic generation (SHG) was clearly observed from the films. The SHG signal and the absorption intensity correlated well up to four polycation/dye bilayers, while further assembly did not increase the SHG signal appreciably. Second order nonlinear coefficients for ten bilayer assemblies were the order of pm/V.
