Garlic oleoresins were made by extracting with four solvents of methanol, methyl acetate hexane and acetone from chopped garlic, respectively, and the volatile compounds of each extract were separated by gas chromatography installed with polar (supelcowax-10$^{TM}$) and nonpolar (HP-5) capillary columns, respectively, and identified by matching mass data of mass selective detector and Kovat\`s retention index with references. The numbers of the volatile compounds identified the garlic oleoresin by polar and nonpolar columns from in garlic oleoresins were 41 and 32, respectively. In polar column, 13 pyrans, 11 sulfur-containing compounds 6 furans 2 alcohols and 2 heterocyclic compounds were identified. In nonpolar column, 11 sulfur-containing compounds 5 acids 3 furans and eugenol were identified. The major sulfur-containing compounds identified from the oleoresins were 3, 3'-thiobis-1-propene, methyl 2-propenyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, di-2-prnpenyl-trisulfide, 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid. The amount of these sulfur-containing compounds isolated from the oleresins were more abundant in polar column than in nonpolar column. The most efficient solvent for extracting volatile compounds of garlic was methanol but the most useful solvent for extracting sulfur-containing compounds was methyl acetate of less polarity.y.

The poor conductivity of poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film hinders to use for a flexible electrode in solar cells. In this report we demonstrate that the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film can be enhanced by modifying structures in a mixture of PEDOT: PSS aqueous solution and various organic solvents such as polar protic (2-propanol, methanol, ethanol, formic acid) and aprotic solvents (acetone and acetonitrile). To comparatively study the structural effects on the resulted electrical properties, the films are spin-coated on glasses and ITO. At the same time, a contact angle goniometer is used for clarifying a mechanism of wettability of PEDOT (hydrophobic) and PSS (hydrophilic) on the observed conductivity. The structures and electrical properties are investigated by FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy), AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), and 4-point probe, respectively.
Organic solvent-tolerant (OST) enzymes are widely applied in various industries for their activity and stability in organic solvents, for their higher substrate solubility, and for their greater stero-selectivity. However, the criteria for identifying OST enzymes largely remain undefined. In this study, we compared the amino acid composition of 19 OST esterases with that of 19 non OST esterases. OST esterases have increased the ratio of Ala and Arg residues and decreased the ratio of Asn, Ile, Tyr, Lys, and Phe residues. Based on our amino acid composition analysis, we cloned a carboxylesterase (EstSP2) from a psychrophilic bacterium, Sphingomonas glacialis PAMC 26605, and characterized its recombinant protein. EstSP2 is a substrate specific to p-nitrophenyl acetate and hydrolyzed aspirin, with optimal activity at $40^{\circ}C$; at $4^{\circ}C$, the activity is approximately 50% of its maximum. As expected, EstSP2 showed tolerance in up to 40% concentration of polar organic solvents, including dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and ethanol. The results of this study suggest that selecting OST esterases based on their amino acid composition could be a novel approach to identifying OST esterases produced from bacterial genomes.
Complexation of cesium ion by p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene ethyl ester was studied by NMR spectroscopy in nonpolar $CDCl_3$ and polar acetone-$d_6$ and the results were compared with each other. Analysis of temperature dependent $^1H$ spectra and titration curves reveals that both solvents result in a 1 : 1 cone-form complex with nonpolar $CDCl_3$yielding a more tightly bound one than acetone-$d_6$. Unexpectedly, at very low temperature, we have found that two phenyl ring proton peaks of equal intensity appear both in $CDCl_3$and in acetone-$d_6$ solution which gradually collapse and eventually coalesce into a single line as temperature is raised. This observation could be interpreted in terms of the chemical exchange through direct and/or indirect interconversion between two equivalent conformations possible the complex in both solvents over the temperature range observed. And broadening of $^{133}Cs$ (I = 7/2) nmr line with increasing temperature has also been observed, indicating the exchange of $^{133}Cs$ ion between the complex and the solvent. From numerical fitting of lineshape changes for one-dimensional $^1H$ and $^{133}Cs$ spectra, the exchange rate constants and other relevant parameters for this conformational interconversion and the complex-solvent exchange were deduced.
The absorption rate of carbon dioxide with 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol(AMP) was measured in such non-aqueous solvents as methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and propylene carbonate, and in water at 298 K and 101.3 kPa using a semi-batch stirred tank with a plane gas-liquid interface. The overall reaction rate constant, obtained under the condition of fast reaction regime, from the measured rate of absorption was used to get the elementary reaction rate constants in complicated reactions represented by reaction mechanism of carbamate formation and the order of overall reaction of $CO_2$ with amine. The correlation between the elementary reaction rate constant and the solubility parameter of the solvent was also presented.
A tri-thiocyanate molybdenum (Ⅴ) complex containing pyridine has been prepared by one step process; namely, the solvent extraction of molybdenum (Ⅴ)-thiocyanate complex into organic solvents followed by precipitation of the compound by addition of pyridine to the extract. It is concluded that the compound has a definite composition regardless of the various mole ratios of molybdenum to thiocyanate ion employed in the preparation. The use of hydrazine as the reducing agent eliminates the necessity of working under inert atmosphere and of further purification of the product. Molybdenum (Ⅴ)-thiocyanate (1:3) complex can be quantitatively and selectively extracted with slightly polar organic solvents such as ethyl acetate, and the pyridine complex is quantitatively obtained due to the insolubility of the compound in them. The oxidation state of molybdenum in the compound is + 5 and the formula appears to be $MoH_2O_2(NCS)_3Py_2$ from the contents of Mo and NCS in the compound. The solubility of the compound in various has been studied at $25^{\circ}C$.
Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-co-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) was prepared and the degree of swelling of solvents into the polymers was examined. It was confirmed that the solubility parameter of PHEMA homopolymer is 26 (J/cm3)1/2. Ethanol was significantly absorbed into copolymers containing large amount of PHEMA, while tetrahydrofuran was effectively absorbed into copolymers containing large amount of PDMS. Absorption of polar solvents into the copolymers were increased with the increase of PDMS content. The model drug, crystal violet (CV), was more absorbable into PDMS-HPEMA copolymers than PHEMA homopolymer. Absorption of CV was decreased with the increase of PDMS content of the copolymers.
A series of aromatic poly(o-hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) were synthesized by the direct polycondensation reaction of 4,4′-(2,3-quinoxalinedioxy) dibenzoic acid and/or 4,4′-(2,3-pyridinedioxy) dibenzoic acid with bis(o-aminophenol) including 2,2-bis-(amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. The PHAs exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of 0.17-0.35 dL/g at $35^{\circ}C$ in a DMAc solution. These polymers showed low inherent viscosities and yielded brittle films. All the PHAs showed excellent solubility in aprotic solvents such as DMAc, DMSO, NMP, and DMF at room temperature and in less polar solvents such as pyridine and THF. However, all the PBOs were only partially soluble in $H_2SO_4$. The PBOs exhibited 10% weight loss at temperatures in the range of $537-551^{\circ}C$. The maximum weight loss temperature increased with an increase in the content of the quinoxaline-containing monomer. The residue of the PBOs showed a weight loss of 45.8-56.7% at $900^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere.
Perstractive fermentation is a good way to increase the productivity of bioreactors. Us-ing Propionibacteria as the model system, the feasibility of using supported emulsion liquid mem-brane(SELM) fro perstractive fermentation is assessed in this study. Five industrial solvents were considered as the solvent for perparing the SELM. The more polar a solvent, is the higher the par-tition coefficeint However, toxicity of a solvent also increases with its polarity. CO-1055(indus-trial decanol/octanol blend)has the highest partition coefficient toward propionic acid among the solvents that has no molecular toxicity toward Propionibacteria, A preliminary extraction study was conducted using tetradecane as solvent in a hydrophobic hollow fiber contactor. The results confirmed that SELM eliminates the equilibrium limitation of conventional liquid-liquid extrac-tion and allows the use of a non-toxic solvent with low partition coefficient.

Understanding the mechanisms that control and concentrate the observed electrospray ionisation (ESI) response from peptides is important. Controlling these mechanisms can improve signal-to-noise ratio in the mass spectrum, and enhances the generation of intact ions, and thus, improves the detection of peptides when analysing mixtures. The effects of different mixtures of aqueous: organic solvents (25, 50, 75%; v/v): formic acid solution (at pH 3.26) compositions on the ESI response and charge-state distribution (CSD) during mass spectrometry (MS) were determined in a group of biologically active peptides (molecular wt range 1.3 - 3.3 kDa). The ESI response is dependent on type of organic solvent in the mobile phase mixture and therefore, solvent choice affects optimal ion intensities. As expected, intact peptide ions gave a more intense ESI signal in polar protic solvent mixtures than in the low polarity solvent. However, for four out of the five analysed peptides, neither the ESI response nor the CSD were affected by the volatility of the solvent mixture. Therefore, in solvent mixtures, as the composition changes during the evaporation processes, the $pK_b$ of the amino acid composition is a better predictor of multiple charging of the peptides.
