  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the near-optimal parameters of continuous beam subject to a moving load. The computer-aided optimization technique is used to obtain the near-optimal parameters. The computer program is developed to obtain the natural frequency parameters and the forced vibration responses to a transit point load for the continuous beam with variable support spacing, mass and stiffness. The optimization function to describe the design efficiency is defined as a linear combination of four dimensionless span characteristics: the maximum dynamic stress; the stress difference between span segments; the rms deflection under the transit point load; and the total span mass. Studies of three span beams show that the beam with near-optimal parameters can improve design efficiency by 12 to 24 percent when compared to a reference configuration beams of the same total span length.

  • Approximating bottled water consumption distribution is complicated by zero observations in the sample. To deal with the zero observations, a mixture model of bottled water consumption distributions is proposed and applied to allow a point mass at zero. The bottled water consumption distribution is specified as a mixture of two distributions, one with a point mass at zero and the other with full support on the positive half of the real line. The model is empirically verified for household bottled water consumption survey data. The mixture model can easily capture the common bimodality feature of the bottled water consumption distribution. In addition, when covariates were added to the model, it was found that the probability that a household has non-consumption significantly varies with some variables.

  • Nowadays Laser Controllable Thermo-cleaving is the most promising method of cutting FPD(Flat Panel Display) glass in mass-production line. And this method can be used to cut other brittle materials such as quartz, sapphire, ceramic and semiconductor. The concept of this method is shown in Picture 1. Laser beam heats glass up to strain point not to melting point and cooling system chills glass to make maximum thermal stress in glass and then the thermal stress generates micro thermal crack in other words blind crack. Laser Controllable Thermo-cleaving controls the thermal stress to optimize the blind crack up to level of mass-production line.

  • Fixed-bed adsorption was adapted to separate phenolic acids from diluted phenolic solution. Break-through curve was obtained by nonlinear curve fitting method, and breakpoint, saturation time, and mass transfer coeffi-cient were calculated . Break point and saturation time were reached slower with $\rho$-coumaric acid than ferulic acid .The p-coumaric acid, having small molecular weight, is suposedly traveled longer pathway in characoal than ferulic acid. Fixed-bed adsorption iwht gallic acid having more hydroxyl functional group than other phenolic acids showed break point arrival and the largest saturation time. This fact means that there was bigger electrostatic affinity between gallic acid and charcoal than between other phenolic acids and charcoal.

  • A skier's motion was analyzed by a simple model consist of point mass m and a single rod connected to a single ski plate. We studied the conditions for the stable ski turn as functions of the linear velocity and the radius of the turn. The solutions for the stable ski turn in our model do not require any extra skier's movement to complete a stable circular turn. The solution may then give the skier the most comfortable skiing method without any active movement to control the ski. The generalized force supporting the point mass from the ski plate was calculated. We obtained the force from the ground (rebound force) without any geometrical structure of the ski plate. Adding an active movement to the direction of the ski plate, the conditions for the stable ski turn were also analyzed. Our result gives some insight for the skier who wants to develop technique.

  • Pollution sources and their environmental contributions were investigated to select the best management practices for the effective control of water quality. The nitrogen isotope mass ratio was determined to estimate the nitrate sources and their contribution. Sampling sites were chosen by calculating effluent loads at each watershed. Two liters each of the surface water samples were collected from four sites at Bokha river and two sites and Gwanri river. They were sequentially prepared through distillation method and analyzed using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer(IsoPrime EA). As revealed by the experimental values obtained the mass ratio values ($\delta$$^{5}$ N) of watersheds with a large amount of nonpoint sources were less than +5 an indication that the samples were influenced by chemical fertilizers. However watersheds with large amount of point sources were influenced not only by chemical fertilizers but also by animal and municipal wastes. The mass ratio values of samples generally decreased during rainy days. But during dry days the mass ratio values well-reflected the nitrate sources and the condition of watersheds. Through this study the nitrogen isotope mass ratio has been found to be useful for estimating nitrate sources and their contribution to the rural watersheds.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal posture control law for an unmanned bicycle by deriving linear bicycle model from fully nonlinear differential equations. We calculate each equilibrium point of a bicycle under any given turning radius and angular speed of rear wheel. There is only one equilibrium point when a bicycle goes straight, while there are a lot of equilibrium points in case of turning. We present an optimal equilibrium point which makes the leaning input minimum when a bicycle is turning. As human riders give rolling torque by moving center of gravity of a body, many previous studies use a movable mass to move center of gravity like humans do. Instead we propose a propeller as a new leaning input which generates rolling torque. The propeller thrust input makes bicycle model simpler and removes input magnitude constraint unlike a movable mass. The proposed controller can hold optimal equilibrium points using both steering input and leaning input. The simulation results on linear control for circular motion are demonstrated to show the validity of the proposed approach.

  • The purpose of the this study was to provide the basic information about the formation background of urban squatter and their housing state in Korea. This study was progressed on the basis of socio-historical point of view from after the Korean War to the present time. Therefore, this study considered the meaning of housing for urban squatter in the Korean housing history. For this study, the formation background of urban squatter was divided into five periods. The first one was the period of the policy on the mass migration (1955-1960) after the Korean War. The second period was the period of reproduction of deteriorated residential area (1960-1970) for the continuing mass migration policy. The third was the period of disbanding of deteriorated residential area (1970-1980) for redevelopment. The forth period was before the IMF (1980-1997) broke up the deteriorated residential area. The fifth period was after the IMF (1997-) produced the new poverty due to the unemployment and the business failure. Thus, such social change increased the number of urban squatter and created the new type urban poor.

  • A new low cost high power density photovoltaic power conditioning system (PV PCS) with an energy storage system is proposed in this paper. Its high power density and cost effectiveness can be achieved through the unification of the maximum power point tracker and the battery charger/discharger. Despite the reduced power stage, the proposed system can achieve the same performance in terms of maximum power point tracking and battery charging/discharging as the conventional system. When a utility power failure happens, the proposed system cannot perform maximum power point tracking at the UPS mode. However, the predetermined battery voltage near the maximum power point of the PV array can effectively generate a reasonable PV power even at the UPS mode. Therefore, it features a simpler structure, less mass, lower cost, and fewer devices. Finally, to confirm the operation, validity, and features of the proposed system, a theoretical analysis and experimental results from a single phase AC 220Vrms/1.5kW prototype are presented.

  • Analysis of point defects invisible by a microscope has been studied on the a-Si thin film transistor panel. The point defects which were named Invisible Point Defect (IPD) is characterized by no particles or distortion of patterns on a pixel structure and randomly distributed on panels. To investigate the IPD, measurements were carried out: gray level driving, transistor transfer characteristic, focused ion beam (FIB), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results showed that a contamination layer had a bad influence on an active surface. The contamination layer consisted of oxygen and iron from a water supply line during cleaning process. After the process tuning, IPD has been stabilized.
