  • It is necessary to predict the activation time of fire detectors accurately to improve the reliability for evaluating the required safe egress time (RSET) in performance-based fire safety design. In this study, problems of the plunge test, which is widely applied in assessing fire detectors, were examined through experiments and numerical simulations. In addition, a new shield-cup test method was proposed to address these problems. A fire detector evaluator (FDE) developed in a previous study was applied to ensure measurement accuracy and reproducibility. During the plunge tests, a significant measurement error was observed in the activation time of the smoke detector because of the rapid flow change when the detector was input. However, during the shield-cup tests, slight changes occurred in the flow inside the FDE when the detector as exposed to smoke. In conclusion, the proposed shield-cup test method is expected to be useful for evaluating the response characteristics of fire detectors more accurately in simulated fire environments.

  • A plunge pool is often employed as an energy-dissipating device at the end of a spillway or a pipe culvert. A jet from spillways or pipes frequently generates a scour hole which threaten the stability of the hydraulic structure. Existing scour prediction formulas of plunge pool of spillways or pipe culverts give a wide range of scour depths, and it is, therefore, difficult to accurately predict those scour depths. In this study, a new experimental method and new sour prediction formulas under submerged circular jet for large bed materials with shallow tailwater depths were developed. A major variable, which was not used in previous scour prediction equations, was the ratio of jet size to bed material size. In this study, jet momentum acting on a bed particle and jet diffustion theory were employed to derive scour prediction formulas. Four theoretical formulas were suggested for the two regions of jet diffusion, i.e., the region of flow establishment and the region of established flow. The semi-theoretically developed scour prediction formulas showed close agreement with laboratory experiments performed on movable bed made of large spherical particles.

  • In this paper, the grinding characteristics in internal grinding methods(plunge, thrust) were studied with vitreous CBN wheels using machining center. Grinding experiments were performed according to the same material removal rate conditions such as a wheel speed, depth of cut and workpiece speed. And the grinding force, machining error and grinding ratio were investigated though these experiments. Based on the experimental results, the grinding characteristics on internal grinding methods were compared.

  • In this paper, grinding characteristics of cylindrical plunge grinding in 200m/sec of grinding velocity was investigated by use of vitrified CBN wheel. From the experimental result, it was convinced that grinding power is decreased 2.5times and grinding efficiency is heightened 3times more according to increasing wheel velocity 80m/sec to 200m/sec And also, be expected to improvement of surface roughness and roundness by increasing the wheel velocity.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of cylindrical plunge grinding. The study investigates the process using the current signals of a spindle motor through a hall sensor. Grinding experiments were conducted under various conditions such as wheel speeds, workpiece speeds and infeed rates with a conventional vitrified bonded wheel. Analyzing the current signal of the spindle motor, a relationship between current signals and the metal removal rate in terms of the in(red rate is induced. It was also shown that a hall sensor has similar capabilities in evaluation of grinding behavior compared to the AE signals, which are useful far monitoring the grinding process.

  • Non-uniform minute deformation of a cylinderical workpiece resulted from the heat treatment process prior to the grinding makes it diffeclt to control the approaching feedrate of a grinding wheelto a workpiece optimallywithout on-site detection of the grinding states in the plunge grinding. The 4-stage model of the plunge grinding process is proposed according to the state of contact between grinding wheel and workpiece ; precontact, partial contact, entire contact and spark-out. Despite of being scrious to the precision of workpiece finished, the duration of spark-out is determined empirically. The purpose of this research is to develop a monitoring/control system for saving non- production time and setting the optimal spark-out time based on sensor information in the plunge grinding using AE and ultra sonic sensor.

  • A computer simulation method for investigating the form generation mechanism in the centerless infeed (plunge) grinding process is described. For a 3-D simulation model of form generation, contact points are assumed to be on least squares contact lines at the grinding wheel, regulating wheel, and work-rest blade. Using force and deflection analyses, the validity of this assumption is shown. Based on the 2-D simulation model developed in the previous work and the least squares contact line assumption, a 3-D model is presented. To validate this model, simulation results were compared with the experimental works. The experiments and computer simulations were carried out using three types of cylindrical workpiece shapes with varying flat length. The experimental results agree well with the simulation. It can be seen that the effect of flat end propagated to the opposite end through workpiece reorientation.

  • In this paper, grinding characteristics of ultra high speed cylindrical plunge grinding was investigated by use of vitrified CBN wheel. From the experimental result, it was convinced that grinding power is decreased according to the increase of wheel and workpiece speed due to changing of grinding mechanism which decreases depth of cut and length of contact curve according to increment of wheel speed. And also, stock removal reduction of each gram lead to improvement of surface roughness by increasing the wheel speed.

  • Plunge milling is the fastest way to mill away large volumes of metal in the axial direction. The residual volume (inaccessible volume by the plungers) is minimized when selecting a specific direction of filling. This direction is known as the optimal inclination angle for filling of the plunged area. This paper proposes a new algorithm to calculate the optimal inclination angle of filling and to fill the plunged area with multi-plungers sizes. The proposed algorithm uses the geometry of the 2D area of the shape that being cutting to estimate the optimal inclination angle of filling. It is found that, the optimal inclination angle for filling of the plunged area is the same direction as the longer width of the equivalent convex polygon of the boundary contour. The results of the tested examples show that, the residual volume is minimized when comparing the proposed algorithm with the previous method.

  • In modern engineering practice, the grinding process is one of the most important and widely used operations for the precision finishing of components. In this paper, machining characteristics of external plunge grinding were investigated by using spindle motor current signal through hall sensor. Grinding experiments were performed in terms of various grinding conditions such as wheel speed, workpiece speed, infeed rate and spark-out time with conventional vitrified bonded WA wheel. The relationship between spindle motor current signal and metal removal rate in terms of infeed rate was induced the by analyzing spindle motor current signal.
