  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of high-strength lattice girders as a possible superior alternative to conventional steel arch ribs. For this purpose, the structural characteristics of supports were analyzed using numerical analysis, and their performance was evaluated using maximum bending load tests and tensile tests of the welded joint. According to the results of structural analysis, the optimum size of the upper and lower members and plates is 50 mm × 31.8 mm × 25.4 mm, demonstrating excellent functionality and economic efficiency. High-strength lattice girders of dimensions 55 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm and 85 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm, determined from bending load tests, are found to meet both the reference values and the target values of H-profiles 100 and 125. A review of the ratio of theoretical deflection to actual deflection shows that the high-strength lattice girder developed during this study meets fewer than five of the evaluation criteria for lattice girder deflections proposed by the Federal Railway Department of Germany. Finally, tensile test results reveal that the welded joint of the high-strength lattice girder at the main steel bar-auxiliary steel bar-plate junction exceeds the target value, indicating that the welded joint has sufficient stability.

  • This paper presents the means of improving the strength of LTV's FRP structure for resolve and prevent quality problems. LTV secures enough kerb weight by applying FRP materials at hood and rear van assembly. However, because of FRP's inherent limitations, many initial quality problems such as crack at connections have occurred. Moreover, hood assy' is concerned about fall of endurance, because hood assy' have operated in abnormal condition. Therefore, this study executes lamination structure optimizations of FRP structure for improving bending strength. As a results, hood and rear van's bending strength at connections is improved 8.1 times and 1.5 times, respectively. Also hood assy's plate secures endurance life and improve 1.7 times of critical load about abnormal operating conditions through 1.4 times improvement of bending strength.

  • The southeastern Korean Peninsula has experienced crustal multi-deformations according to changes of global tectonic setting during the Cenozoic. Characteristic features of the crustal deformations in relation to major Cenozoic tectonic events are summarized as follows. (1) Collision of Indian and Eurasian continents and abrupt change of movement direction of the Pacific plate (50${\sim}$43 Ma): The collision of Indian and Eurasian continents caused the eastward extrusion of East Asia block as a trench-rollback, and then the movement direction of the Pacific plate was abruptly changed from NNW to WNW. As a result, the strong suction-force along the plate boundary produced a tensional stress field trending EW or WNW-ESE in southeastern Korea, which resultantly induced the passive intrusion of NS or NNE trending mafic dike swarm. (2) Opening of the East Sea (25${\sim}$16 Ma): The NS or NNW-SSE trending opening of the East Sea generated a dextral shear stress regime trending NNW-SSE along the eastern coast line of the Korean Peninsula. As a result, pull-apart basins were developed in right bending and overstepping parts along major dextral strike slip faults trending NNW-SSE in southeastern Korea. The basins can be divided into two types on the basis of geometry and kinematics: Parallelogram-shaped basin (rhombochasm) and wedged-shaped basin (sphenochasm), respectively. In those times, the basins and adjacent basement blocks experienced clockwise rotation and northwestward tilting contemporaneously, and the basins often experienced a kind of propagating rifting from NE toward SE. At about 17Ma, the Yonil Tectonic Line, which is the westernmost border fault of the Miocene crustal deformation in southeastern Korea, began to move as a major dextral strike slip fault. (3) Clockwise rotation of southeastern Japan Island (about 15 Ma): The collision of the Izu-Bonin Arc and southeastern Japan Island, as a result of northward movement of the Philippine sea-plate, induced the clockwise rotation of southeastern Japan Island. The event caused the NW-SE compression in the Korea Strait as a tectonic inversion, which resultantly tenninated the basin extension and caused local counterclockwise rotation of blocks in southeastern Korea. (4) E-W compression in the East Asia (after about 5 Ma): Decreasing subduction angle of the Pacific plate and eastward movement of the Amurian plate have constructed the-top-to-west thrusts and become a major cause for earthquakes in southeastern Korea until the present time.

  • We have demonstrated a low speed weigh-in motion system using FBG sensors and performed field test at a trial road. Technique, called identical chirped grating interrogation, have used for a demodulation relying on the mismatching of two identical broadband chirped gratings. We compensated the fluctuation of LED power and the temperature of sensor and used a lock-in amplifier to reduce effect of noise. We could design a bending plate that the measurement results are independent of position of weight. The FBG sensors weigh-in motion system showed linearity and reproducibility.

  • In this work, thermomechanical flexural analysis of functionally graded material sandwich plates with P-FGM face sheets and E-FGM and symmetric S-FGM core is performed by employing a nth-order shear deformation theory. A novel type of S-FGM sandwich plates, namely, both P-FGM face sheets and a symmetric S-FGM hard core are considered. By employing only four unknown variables, the governing equations are obtained based on the principle of virtual work and then Navier method is used to solve these equations. Analytical solutions are deduced to compute the stresses and deflections of simply supported S-FGM sandwich plates. The effects of volume fraction variation, geometrical parameters and thermal load on thermomechanical flexural behavior of the symmetric FGM sandwich plates are investigated.

  • In this paper, elastic responses of a floating structure in waves with a breakwater are presented. The method of source-dipole distribution is used to analyze the velocity potentials for the fluid region. The deflections of structure are expanded approximately in terms of natural mode functions of free-free beam. The model for present calculation is a floating plate with an length of 1000m and the hydroelastic responses for a floating structure with a straight breakwater are shown. The effects of distance between breakwater and structure, bending rigidity and relative length of regular waves are examined.

  • In this study, a method to characterize material properties of adhesive that is used in a layered plates bonding process is developed by combined evaluation of experiment, simulation and optimization technique. A small bonded specimens of rectangular plate are prepared to this end, and put into a thermal loading conditions. $Moir{\acute{e}}$ interferomety is used to measure submicron displacements occurred during the process. The elevated temperature is chosen as control factors. FE analysis with constant values for the adhesive materials is also carried out to simulate the experiment. Significant differences are observed from the two results, in which the simulation predicts the monotonic increase of the bending displacement whereas the measurement shows decrease of the displacement at above $75^{\circ}C$. In order to minimize the difference of the two, material parameters of the adhesive at a number of different temperatures are posed as unknowns to be determined, and optimization is conducted. As a result, optimum material parameters are found that excellently matches the simulation and experiment, which are decreased with respect to the temperature.

  • It is essential to predict the welding deformation at assembly stage, to increase productivity through mechanization and automation effectively. A practical analysis method appled for production engineering was proposed to simulate the deformation of arc welding, with an analytical model using finite element method solving thermal-elastic-plastic behavior. In this research, for accurate assembling, 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic finite element model is used to simulate the out-of-plane deformation caused by arc welding. Efforts have been made to find out the efficient method to improve the reliability and accuracy of the numerical calculation. Each of theories of small and large deformation is applied in solving 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic problem to compare with their efficiency about calculation imes and solution accuracy. When solid elements are used in a bending problem of a plate, phenomenon that the predictive deformation is more than that of actual survey is observed. To prevent this phenomenon, reduced integration method for element is employed instead of full integration that is generally used in 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic analysis.

  • In this study, the buckling loads and mode shapes characteristic of circular and non-circular(elliptical) closed composite shells were analyzed. To analyses the buckling behaviors, we develop and report an improved generalized shell element called 4EAS-FS through a combination of enhanced assumed strain and the substitute shear strain fields. A flat shell element has been developed by combining membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. The combined influences of length, thicknesses, cross-sectional parameters, and fiber-angle on the critical buckling loads and mode shapes of circular and non-circular(elliptical) closed shells are examined.

  • Fuel assembly's mechanical characterization test facility (FAMeCT) in KAERI was constructed with upgraded functional features such as increased loading capacity, underwater vibration testing and severe earthquake simulation for extended fuel design guideline. This facility is designed and developed to provide out-pile fuel data for accident analysis model and fuel licensing. Functional tests of FAMeCT were performed to confirm functionality, structural integrity, and validity of newly-built fuel assembly mechanical test facility. Test program includes signal check of data acquisition system, load delivering capacity using real-sized fuel assemblies and a standard loading cylindrical rigid specimen. Fuel assembly's lateral bending test was carried out up to 30 mm of pull-out displacement. Limit case axial compression loading test up to 33 kN was performed to check structural integrity of UCPS (Upper Core Plate Simulator) support frame. Test results show that all test equipment and measurement system have acceptable range of alignment, signal to noise ratio, load carrying capacity limit without loss of integrity. This paper introduces newly constructed fuel assembly's mechanical test facility and summarizes results of functional test for the mechanical test equipment and data acquisition system.
