  • Cattle feeding in South Korea has been heavily dependent on domestically produced rice straw and imported grain. Around 42% of domestically produced rice straw is utilized for forage, and the remainder is recycled to restore soil fertility. Approximately 35% of round baleages were made with rice straw. However, higher quality hay is desired over rice straw. Due to increasing stockpiles of rice, there has been an economic burden on the government to store the surplus; therefore production of annual forage crops in rice fields has been further promoted in recent years. Hay import from the USA currently constitutes more than 80% of total imported hays. The main imported hays are alfalfa (Medicago sativa), timothy (Phleum pretense), and tall fescue (Festica arundinacea). The estimated forage required for cattle feeding was approximately 5.4 million MT in 2016. Domestically produced forage sates only 43% of that value, while low quality rice straw and imported hay covered the rest of demand by 33% and 20%, respectively. As utilization of domestically produced forage is more desirable for forage-based cattle production, long-term strategies have been necessary to promote domestic production of high quality baleage. One such strategy has been utilizing the fertile soil and abundance of fallow rice fields of western region of S. Korea to produce forage crops. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is the most successfully produced winter annual in the region and is approximately 56% of the total winter annual forage production. Forage sorghums (Sorghum bicolor), sorghum × sudangrass hybrids, and hybrid corn (Zea mays) produce a substantial amount of warm-season forage during summer. Produced forage has been largely stored through baleage due to heavy dew and frequent rains and has been evaluated according to S. Korea's newly implemented baleage commodity evaluation system. The system weighs 50% of its total grading points on moisture content because of its importance in deliverable DM content and desirable baleage fermentation; this has proved to be an effective method. Although further improvement is required for the future of forage production in South Korea, the current government-led forage production in rice fields has been able to alleviate some of the country's shortage for quality hay.

  • Environmental measurements in the many different types of horticultural farms were carried out to evaluate the ventilation performance for multi-span plastic greenhouses according to the eaves height, the number of spans, the existence of side wall vents and the position of roof vents. Hydroponic tomatoes were being cultivated in all experimental greenhouses, and ventilation rates of the greenhouses were analyzed by the heat balance method. It showed that the ventilation rate in the greenhouse with 4 m eaves height increased about 22% compared to the greenhouse with 2 m eaves height. The ventilation rate in the greenhouse with 9 spans decreased about 17% compared to the greenhouse with 5 spans. In the greenhouse with 9 spans, if there were no side wall vents, the ventilation rate showed about a third of the case that side wall vents were open. Overall, as the eaves height was higher and the number of spans was smaller in multi-span greenhouses, the natural ventilation performance was better. And the ventilation performance was best in the greenhouse which the eaves height was high and the position of roof vents was ridge, not gutter. Therefore, in order to maximize the natural ventilation performance, multi-span plastic greenhouses need to improve their structures such as that make the eaves height higher, place the roof vents on the ridge, install the side wall vents as much as possible, and the number of spans is limited to about 10 spans.

  • The effects of barnyard millet (Echinochloa spp.) content (10~30%) on wheat flour dough and noodle properties were investigated. As the amount of barnyard millet increased, the particle size and ash content of mixed flour increased, while lightness tended to decrease. The gelatinization characteristics of millet flour showed higher peak viscosity, holding strength, final viscosity, and setback compared with wheat flour. There was significant positive correlation between protein content and sedimentation volume, as well as between protein content and water absorption. As the amount of barnyard millet increased, hardness, springiness and cohesiveness of wet noodles tended to decrease. From the results of sensory evaluation, composite flours (addition up to 20% barnyard millet) were rated with a quality score for taste and overall acceptance which was comparable with the control flour.

  • Changes of the spectroscopic characteristics of the organic matter fractions and circular filter paper chromatograph were assessed for the bark and piggery manure composts during the composting. as an approach to base the criteria of the compost maturity evaluation. Contents of humic acid-C (HA-C) and fulvic acid-C (FA-C) in both bark and piggery manure composts were decreased as the composting got closer to maturity, but the ratios of HA-C/FA-C were increased. During the composting. ${\Delta}log$ K values were decreased, but RF values were increased. Humic acid of the mature bark compost after 120 days of composting was A-type, as compared to Rp-type for the raw bark and B-type for the immature compost. However. humic acid of the mature piggery manure composts after 40 days of composting was B-type, indicating the humification of the organic matter fractions continued at this stage. Circular filter paper chromatograph of the mature bark compost exhibited the regular sawteeth pattern at the edge, but that of the mature piggery manure showed an irregular sawteeth pattern. Results demonstrated that spectroscopic characteristics and circular filter paper chromatograph of the organic by-product composts might be employed for the compost stability assessment.

  • This paper describes an integrity evaluation method for emergency diesel generator(EDG) and rotor part of EDG. EDG is a very important equipment in the nuclear power plant(NPP). EDG supplies electricity to the safety-related equipments for the safety shut down of NPP in an emergency situation of earthquake. The safety of the rotor part of EDG is also important during seismic impact from earthquake. The finite element modelling of the EDG including rotor part was constructed. The modal analysis of EDG was firstly performed. The first natural frequency was calculated and revealed higher than the cutoff frequency of seismic spectrum. Then the stress analysis was done to compare with the allowable stress. The safety of the rotor part was investigated by the finite element analysis of the rotor and journal bearing interaction to find film thickness and critical speed. The seismic load was applied to rotor part in a manner that the load was a weighted static load. Analysis results showed that the maximum stress was within the range of allowable stress and the film thickness is larger than the permissible minimum thickness, and the critical speed was out of the operating speed. Hence, the structural and dynamic integrity of EDG could be confirmed by the numerical analysis method used in this paper. However, dynamic analysis of a rotating rotor and supporting bearing with the seismic impact needs to be investigated in a more rigorous method since the seismic load to the rotating part complicates the behavior of rotating system.

  • The overall objective of this study was to determine which variety of carrot-10 Japan varieties or 6 domestic varieties- produces the optimum quality, when cultivated on Jeju Island. Plant height, leaf number and leaf weight were observed to be more superior in the purebred variety ‘Jungang’than other varieties. further studies, however, skewed the crossing variety ‘Bureoun’was superior to all others. Furthermore, when comparing root diameter, root length and root weight, the ‘Bibary’was superior in both the purebred and crossing variety, When researching Japan varieties, the crossing variety, ‘Jung’showed an increase in underground root. The purebred variety ‘Donghae’also showed an increase in underground root. Marketable yields in domestic varieties were greatest in ‘Hapa’, while in Japan varieties, ‘Kaneko’was the most productive. The percentage of root cracked was 15% greater in ‘Bureon’. In the purebred variety, Jungang, the percentage was only 10%. The percentage of roots branched was highest in ‘Hidomi’which showed a rate of 9%, The roots branched rate was 2% for ‘Jung’and 6% for‘Donghae’. Considering the percentage of roots clacked or branched, the marketability of carrots was higher in Japan varieties in comparison with domestic varieties. Therefore we conclude that, in the cropping patterns of carrots, the domestic variety has an advantage over the Japan variety.

  • In this study, as one of solutions associated with the shortage of treatment area of industrial waste and the containment of its harmful components, the bottom ash which is known to be by-products of thermoelectric power plant was selected and its applicability for aggregate of concrete mixture was measured. Hardness test, sieve analysis, water-absorption test and SEM analysis were carried out to investigate the possibility of using bottom ash as a replacement of coarse and fine aggregate. Chemical analyses such as ignition loss test and X-ray incidence were carried out also. In addition, values for slump, strength, permeability, freeze and thaw, and carbonation were evaluated in terms of effects of replacement ratio of bottom ash. As the results, it was found that, though bottom ash is in short supply of fine particles and is in lack of cohesion, these problems can be solved by partially mixing with natural aggregates or improving in a process of production. In addition, bottom ash has not only advantage of durability but also acquirement of general compressive strengths in case that a certain proportion of natural aggregate is applied to mixture, in spite that unit water or chemical admixture should be increased to acquire good workability due to plenty of porosity.

  • This study focused on the regulations and support system of green rooftop landscaping between Korea and China. Our research found out regulations and support system to review the supplement point to understand the present state of green rooftop landscaping in the two countries. We aimed to provide basic legal information for the development of green rooftop landscaping regulations. Also, a management plan guide and after-evaluation guide were suggested. First, roof load safety is the foremost factor for the structure of green rooftop landscaping. It includes not only considering the weight of construction materials, but also accurately calculating weight of rain, snow and the rooftop's capacity for people when the rooftop is designed. Second, the appropriate waterproof and root material should be selected basing on climatic conditions. Third, a maintenance and management plan needs to be established to regularly check the plant, facilities, soil and to maintain them. Fourth, the criteria of quality inspection are waterproof and root resistant material, and the growth and development of plants. Waterproof and root resistant materials are a very important part of rooftop greening, so they must be strictly inspected after construction. Fifth, the support system of rooftop greening should be continuously improved. The choice of the object and the amount of support should be strictly stipulated so that the construction of rooftop is promoted when volunteers do rooftop greening.
