  • This manuscript covers the results of field investigation and lab-scale experiments to design a double-layered biofilter system to control urban storm runoff. The biofilter system consisted of a coarse soil layer (CSL) for filtration and fine soil layer (FSL) for adsorption and biological degradation. The variations of flow rate and water quality of runoff from a local expressway were monitored for seven storm events. Laboratory column experiments were performed using seven kinds of soil and mulch to maximize pollutants removal. The site mean concentration (SMC) of storm runoff from the drainage area (runoff coefficient: 0.92) was measured to be 203 mg/L for SS, 307 mg/L for $TCOD_{Cr}$, 12.3 mg/L for TN, 7.3 mg/L for ${NH_4}^+-N$, and 0.79 mg/L for TP, respectively. This study employed a new design concept, to cover the maximum rainfall intensity with one month recurrence interval. Effective storms for last ten years (1998-2007) in seoul suggested the design rainfull intensity to be 8.8 mm/hr Single layer soil column showed the maximum removal rate of pollutants load when the uniformity coefficient of CSL was 1.58 and the silt/clay contents of FSL was virtually 7%. The removal efficiency during operation of double layer soil column was 98% for SS and turbidity, 75% for TCODCr, 56% for ${NH_4}^+-N$, 87% for TP, and 73-91% for heavy metals. The hydraulic conductivity of the soil column, 0.023 cm/sec, suggested that the surface area of the biofilter system should be about 1% of the drainage area to treat the rainfall intensity of one month recurrence interval.

  • In the environment where various and complicated threat signals exist, RWR (Radar Warning Receiver), which can warn pilot of the existence of threats, has long been a necessary electronic warfare (EW) system to improve survivability of aircraft. The angle of arrival (AOA) information, the most reliable sorting parameter in the RWR, is measured by means of four-quadrant amplitude comparison direction finding (DF) technique. Each of four antennas (usually spiral antenna) of DF unit covers one of four quadrant zones, with 90 degrees apart with nearby antenna. According to the location of antenna installed in helicopter, RWR is subject to signal loss and interference by helicopter body and structures including tail bumper, rotor blade, and so on, causing a difficulty of detecting hostile emitters. In this paper, the performance degradation caused by signal interference by tail rotor blades has been estimated by measuring amplitude video signals into which RWR converts RF signals in case a part of antenna is screened by real tail rotor blade in anechoic chamber. The results show that corruption of pulse amplitude (PA) is main cause of DF error. We have proposed two algorithms for resolving the interference by tail rotor blades as below: First, expand the AOA group range for pulse grouping at the first signal analysis phase. Second, merge each of pulse trains with the other, that signal parameter except PRI and AOA is similar, after the first signal analysis phase. The presented method makes it possible to use RWR by reducing interference caused by blade screening in case antenna is screened by tail rotor blades.

  • EU's Galileo project is a market-based GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) that is under development. It is expected that Galileo will provide the positioning services based on new technologies in 2020s. Because Galileo E1 signal for OS (Open Service) shares the same center frequency with GPS L1 C/A signal, CBOC (Composite Binary Offset Carrier) modulation scheme is used in the E1 signal to guarantee interoperability between two systems. With E1 signal consisting of a data channel and a pilot channel at the same frequency band, there exist several options in designing signal acquisition for Assisted-Galileo receivers. Furthermore, compared to SNR worksheet of Assisted-GPS, some factors should be examined in Assisted-Galileo due to different correlation profile and code length of E1 signal. This paper presents SNR worksheets of Galileo E1 signals in E1-B and E1-C channel. Three implementation losses that are quite different from GPS are mainly analyzed in establishing SNR worksheets. In the worksheet, hybrid long integration of 1.5s is considered to acquire weak signal less than -150dBm. Simulation results show that the final SNR of E1-B signal with -150dBm is 19.4dB and that of E1-C signal is 25.2dB. Comparison of relative computation shows that E1-B channel is more profitable to acquire the strongest signal in weak signal environment. With information from the first satellite signal acquisition, fast acquisition of the weak signal around -155dBm can be performed with E1-C signal in the subsequent satellites.

  • The behavior of a one-step fixed bed reactor which directly synthesizes dimethyl ether(DME) from Natural Gas was simulated. In the reactor, the prevention of the occurrence of hot spots which can cause deactivation of catalysts is pivotal, since methanol synthesis and dehydration reaction involved in the synthesis of DME are highly exothermic. Therefore, we simulated and compared performance of the reactor with counter-current cooling and pool boiling system that can be applied to a commercial plant. As a result, we found that counter-current cooling system is more effective in terms of CO conversion and DME productivity. However, pool boiling system can operate in a small temperature gradient that can decrease problems caused by hot spot. And, the system can operate in a safer range.

  • In this paper, we study single-user receiver, which applicable to DS-CDMA downlink. DS-CDMA downlink mainly use wallsh code, its orthogonality may be lost by the multiple access interference(MAI) caused by the multipath channel. In this paper, we use linear channel equalizer to eliminate the interference due to multipath channel and then to recover orthogonalit and use code-matched filter to detect transmitted data. Unlike existing research, which mainly assumed ideal channel information, we use pilot channel to estimate the channel coefficients. Especially we use guard symbols which are inserted periodically to estimate channel coefficients exactly without interference from user signal, and we accept an approximately ideal. The results show that improvement can be achieved using proposed detectors compared with that of that conventional RAKE receiver, especially when the user population is high we accepts excellent performance improvement.

  • In this paper, we present a Smart Water Treatment Plant using Zigbee USN devices and a real-time monitoring system in K-water Flow Meter Calibration Center Building. For verification, the data of vertical type WTP such as flow rate, pressure, water level and water temperature are obtained by the Zigbee USN devices, operating in 2.45 GHz band, and be wirelessly surveilled by the real-time monitoring system. The received data from the sensor is transmitted to the data processing device, and then the processed data can be monitored on a smart phone. Consequently, the pilot plant based on the low-cost and high-efficiency USN has been developed with the performance analysis for the communication network and remote monitoring system on mobile devices.

  • The carrier frequency offset causes loss of orthogonality between sub-carriers, thus leads to inter-carrier interference (ICI) in the OFDM symbol. This ICI causes severe degradation of the BER performance of the OFDM receiver. In this paper, we propose a new ICI cancellation algorithm which estimates frequency offset at the time-domain by using CP-ICA method to the received sub-carriers phase rotation. This algorithm is based on a statistical blind estimation method, which mainly utilizes the EVD, rotating phase and the $4^{th}-cumulants$. Since our scheme does not need any training and pilot symbol in estimation, we can expect enhanced bandwidth efficiency in OFDM systems. Simulation results show that the proposed frequency offset estimator is more accurate than the other estimators in $0.0<\varepsilon<1.0$.

  • In this paper, the author presents the MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) receiver algorithm with the capability of inter-cell or inter-sector interference cancellation over multi-antenna OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems. As contrast with the previous research dealing with the filtering scheme at the time domain, the proposed algorithm is presented as the pre-filtering scheme which can be applicable to the frequency domain. Note that the proposed one can be implemented only by pilot symbols which are used in the channel estimation. In addition, it is analytically confirmed that the proposed scheme can be applied for either MIMO( C-SM(Collaborative-Spatial Multiplexing)) interference or SIMO(Single-Input Multi-Out) interference. The proposed receiver algorithm is verified by simulations over UL-PUSC SR off in IEEE 802.16e standard. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed one can be applicable regardless of the kind of interference. Furthermore, it is verified that the performance is guaranteed even under Ole severe effect of interference and the improvement of system throughput is guaranteed.

  • Low parasitemic condition in malaria remains a diagnostic challenge; as the available diagnostic methods failed to detect. Currently, hemozoin (Hz) pigment is gaining attention in the diagnosis of malaria. The major drawback is ease of detection of Hz in routine practice. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the role of Hz pigment and to compare the performance of quantitative buffy coat assay (QBC) and PCR in such conditions. Clinically suspected cases of malaria were examined by both Giemsa stain and immunochromatographic test (ICT). Samples positive by ICT and negative by Giemsa stain were further examined by nested PCR targeting 18S rRNA and QBC for the presence of malaria parasites and pigments. Thirty blood samples fulfilled the inclusion criteria out of which 23 were Plasmodium vivax (Pv), 4 Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), and 3 mixed (Pv and Pf) by immunochromatographic test. Twenty-one out of 30 (70%) were positive by nested PCR in comparison to 25/30 (83%) by QBC. Samples containing both malaria parasites and Hz pigment by QBC completely showed concordance with the PCR result. However, 61% of total samples containing only Hz pigment were observed positive by PCR. Hz pigment remains an important tool for malaria diagnosis. Identification of leukocytes containing pigments by QBC not only indicates recent malarial infections but also puts light on severity of the disease. QBC assay is a rapid, highly sensitive, and cost-effective method to detect malaria parasites and Hz pigment especially in low parasitemic conditions.
