In this study, the topology optimization is applied to the design of a piezoelectric microactuator satisfying the specific mean transduction ratio(MTR). The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current mean transduction ratio. In order to analyze the response of the piezoelectric-structure coupled system, both the structural and the electric potential are considered in the finite element method. The optimization problem is resolved by using Sequential Linear Programming(SLP) and the results of test problems show that the design of a piezoelectric microactuator with specified mean transduction ratio can be obtained.

This study presents a method to monitor cable force of a long-span cable-stayed bridge using a smart piezoelectric sensor system. The following approaches are implemented in order to achieve the objective. Firstly, the method to utilize piezoelectric materials for the health monitoring of stay cables is presented. For strain measurement of a stay cable, a PZT-embedded smart skin is designed to overcome the difficulties of bonding PZT sensors directly on stay cables. Secondly, a piezoelectric strain monitoring system for stay cables is designed. For the operation of the sensor board, the Imote2 sensor platform is used to provide the computation, wireless communication and power supply units. The feasibility of the proposed monitoring system is then evaluated on a full-scale cable of a cable-stayed bridge.

The purpose of this study is to obtain strong bond strength at the interface between piezoelectric substrates and semiconductor thin films to be applied for the manufacture of high-performance acoustic wave semiconductor coupled device. For this purpose, we have compared and examined the effects of different surface treatment methods on hydrophile properties at the surface of the piezoelectric substrates. Moreover, we have observed the effect of microwave and laser on the elimination of water molecules at the interface. As for the piezoelectric substrates, dry method for surface treatment was found to be superior in the control of hydrophilicity of the surface compared to wet method. On the other hand, both microwave and laser were found to be effective in the elimination of water molecules in the interface.

An analytical method is presented to solve the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere subjected to thermal shock and electric excitation. Exact expressions for the transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and electric potentials in the piezoelectric hollow sphere are obtained by means of Hankel transform, Laplace transform, and inverse transforms. Using Hermite non-linear interpolation method solves Volterra integral equation of the second kind involved in the exact expression, which is caused by interaction between thermo-elastic field and thermo-electric field. Thus, an analytical solution for the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere is obtained. Finally, some numerical results are carried out, and may be used as a reference to solve other transient coupled problems of thermo-electro-elasticity.
High-sensitivity signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) microphones are essentially required for a broad range of automatic speech recognition applications. Piezoelectric microphones have several advantages compared to conventional capacitor microphones including high stiffness and high SNR. In this study, we designed a new piezoelectric membrane structure by using the finite elements method (FEM) and an optimization technique to improve the sensitivity of the transducer, which has a high-quality AlN piezoelectric thin film. The simulation demonstrated that the sensitivity critically depends on the inner radius of the top electrode, the outer radius of the membrane, and the thickness of the piezoelectric film in the microphone. The optimized piezoelectric transducer structure showed a much higher sensitivity than that of the conventional piezoelectric transducer structure. This study provides a visible path to realize micro-scale high-sensitivity piezoelectric microphones that have a simple manufacturing process, wide range of frequency and low DC bias voltage.

In order to develop piezoelectric inverter module for CCFL driving, Rosen-type multilayer piezoelectric transformer was fabricated. The output power and efficiency of mutilayer piezoelectric transformer according to the variation inner electrode layer were investigated. Mutilayer piezoelectric transformer was fabricated conventional mutilayer ceramic method using PZT base ceramics. Also, piezoelectric inverter module was adopted driving circuit with half-bridge type. The piezoelectric inverter module was set up with input voltage 12.5 V, switching frequency 104.3 KHz. The results showed the value of step-up ratio 100, efficiency 87% at load resistance of $100k{\Omega}$.

A multilayer square-type piezoelectric transformer with a hole at the center was investigated in this paper. Temperature distribution at the center was improved by using this construction, therefore increasing input voltage and output power. This model was simulated and investigated successfully by applying a finite element method (FEM) in ATILA software. An optimized structure was then fabricated, examined, and compared to the simulation results. Electrical characteristics, including output voltage and output power, were measured at different load resistances. The temperature distribution was also monitored using an infrared camera. The piezoelectric transformer operated at first radial vibration mode and a frequency area of 70 kHz. The 16 W output power was achieved in a three-layer transformer with 96% efficiency and $20^{\circ}C$ temperature rise from room temperature under 115 V driving voltage, 100 ${\Omega}$ matching load, $28{\times}28{\times}1.8mm$ size, and 2 mm hole diameter. With these square-type multilayer piezoelectric transformers, the temperature was concentrated around the hole and lower than in piezoelectric transformers without a hole.
This paper presents the optimum load-speed diagram evaluation for a linear micromotor, including multitude cantilever piezoelectric bimorphs, briefly. Each microbeam in the mechanism can be actuated in both axial and flexural modes simultaneously. For this design, we consider quasi-static and linear conditions, and a relatively new numerical method called the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) is introduced here. For this purpose, after finding an optimum volume fraction for piezoelectric layers through a standard numerical method such as quadratic finite element method, the relevant load-speed curves of the optimized micromotor are examined and compared by deterministic topology optimization (DTO) design. In this regard, to avoid the overly stiff behavior in FEM modeling, a numerical method known as the cell-based smoothed finite element method (CS-FEM, as a branch of S-FEM) is applied for our DTO problem. The topology optimization procedure to find the optimal design is implemented using a solid isotropic material with a penalization (SIMP) approximation and a method of moving asymptotes (MMA) optimizer. Because of the higher efficiency and accuracy of S-FEMs with respect to standard FEMs, the main micromotor characteristics of our final DTO design using a softer CS-FEM are substantially improved.

This paper presents the numerical analysis of piezoelectric devices using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The characteristic of piezoelectric transducer, such as mechanical displacement and electrical are analyzed and the validity is confirmed by experiments Applying the finite element routine to a piezoelectric transformer, the resonance features electrical impedance. the ratio of step-up voltage and vibration mode of piezoelectric transformer are calculated numerically By using three-dimensional finite element method effects of width variation to resonance features, electrical input impedance and the voltage step-up ratio for a piezoelectric transformer, can be considered in design procedure.
