Monitoring of Climatological Variability Using EOS and OSMl Data

  • Dramatic changes in the patterns of satellite-derived pigment concentrations, sea-level height anomaly, sea surface temperature anomaly, and zonal wind anomaly are observed during the 1997-1998 El Ni$\bar{n}$o. By some measures, the 1997-1998 El Ni$\bar{n}$o was the strongest one of the 20$^{th}$ century. A very strong El Ni$\bar{n}$o developed during 1997 and matured late in the year. A dramatic recovery occurred in mid-1998 and led to La Nina condition. The largest spatial extent of the phytoplankton bloom was fellowed recovery from El Ni$\bar{n}$o over the equatorial Pacific. The evolution towards a warm episode (El Ni$\bar{n}$o) started from spring of 2002 and continued during January 2003, while equatorial SSTA remained greater than +1$^{\circ}C$ in the central equatorial Pacific. The OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager) data are used for detection of dramatic changes in the patterns of pigment concentration during next El Ni$\bar{n}$o.

Ecosysteme de I′Etang de Berre (Mediterranee nord-occidentale) : Caracteres Generales Physiques, Chimiques et Biologiques

  • Climatological, hydrological and planktonical research studies, measurements of primary production and photosynthetic efficiency from December 1976 to December 1978 have been carried out in two brackish lakes: Lake Etang de Berre and Lake Etang de Vaine located in the French Mediterranean coast, in the region of Carry-le-Rouet located on the north-west Mediterranean near Marseilles, and in fresh water inflows from 4 Rivers (Touloubre, Durance, Arc, Durancole) to Lake Etang de Berre. Physico-chemical parameters were measured for this study: water temperature, salinity, density, pH, alcalinity, dissolved oxygen (% saturation), phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, silicate etc. Diverse biological parameters were also studied: photosynthetic pigments, phaeopigments, specific composition and biomass of phytoplankton, primary pelagic production etc. Climatical factors were studied: air-temperature, solar-radiation, evaporation, direction (including strength) of winds, precipitation and freshwater volume of the four rivers. The changes in Lake ‘Etang de Berre’ ecosystem depend on the quality of the water in the Durance River, and on the effects of seawater near the entrance of the Caronte Canal. The water quality of the lake varies horizontally and vertically as a result of atmospheric phenomena, maritime currents and tides. The distribution of water temperatures is generally heterogeneous. Southeasterly winds and the Northeasterly Mistral wind are important in the origins of circulated and mixed water masses. These winds are both frequent and strong. They have, as a result, a great effect on the water environment of Lake Etang de Berre. In theory, the annual precipitation in this region is well over eight times the water mass of the lake. The water of the Durance River flows into Lake Etang de Berre through the EDF Canal, amounting to 90% of the precipitation. However, reduction of rainfall in dry seasons has a serious effect on the hydrological characteristics of the lake. The temperature in the winter is partially caused by the low temperature of fresh water, particularly that of the Durance River. The hydrological season of fresh and brackish water is about one month ahead of the hydrological season of sea water in its vicinity. The salinity of Lake Etang de Berre runs approximately 3$\textperthousand$, except at lower levels and near the entrance to the Caronte Canal. However, when the volume of the Durance River water is reduced in the summer and fall, the salinity rises to 15$\textperthousand$. In the lake, the ratio of fresh water to sea water is six to one (6:1). The large quantities of seston conveyed by rivers, particularly the Durance diversion, strongly reduce the transparency in the brackish waters. Although the amount of sunshine is also notable, transparency is slight because of the large amount of seston, carried chiefly by Tripton in the fresh water of the Durance River. Therefore, photosynthesis generally occurs only in the surface layer. The transparency progressively increases from freshwater to open seawater, as mineral particles sink to the bottom (about 1.7kg $m^{-2}a^{-1}$ on the average in brackish lakes). The concentration of dissolved oxygen and the rate of oxygen saturation in seawater (Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 5.0 to 6.0 $m\ell$ㆍ.$1^{-1}$, and from 95 to 105%, respectively. The amount of dissolved oxygen in Etang de Berre oscillated between 2.9 and 268.3%. The monographs of phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and silicate were published as a part of a study on the ecology of phytoplankton in these environments. Horizontal and vertical distributions of these nutriments were studied in detail. The recent diversion of the Durance River into Lake Etang de Berre has effected a fundamental change in this formerly marine environment, which has had a great impact in its plankton populations. A total of 182 taxa were identified, including 111 Bacillariophyceae, 44 Chlorophyceae, and 15 Cyanophyceae. The most abundant species are small freshwater algae, mainly Chlorophyceae. The average density is about $10^{8}$ cells $1^{-1}$ in Lake Etang de Berre, and about double that amount in Lake Etang de Vaine. Differences in phytoplankton abundance and composition at the various stations or at various depths are slight. Cell biovolume V (equivalent to true biomass), plasma volume VP (‘useful’ biomass) and, simultaneously. the cell surface area S and S/V ratio through the measurement of cell dimensions were computed as the parameters of phytoplankton productivity and metabolism. Pigment concentrations are generally very high on account of phytoplankton blooms by Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae. On the other hand, in freshwaters and marine waters, pigment concentrations are comparatively low and stable, showing slight annual variation. The variations of ATP concentration were closely related to those of chlorophyll a and phytoplankton blooms only in marine waters. The carbon uptake rates ranged between 38 and 1091 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with an average surface value of 256 mg; water-column carbon-uptake rates ranged between 240 and 2310 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with an average of 810, representing 290 mg$Cm^{-2}$, per year 45 000 tons per year of photosynthetized carbon for the whole lake. Gross photosynthetic production measured by the method of Ryther was studied over a 2-year period. The values obtained from marine water(Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 23 to 2 337 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with a weighted average of 319, representing about 110 gCm$^{-2}$ per year. The values in brakish water (Etang de Berre) ranged from 14 to 1778 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with a weighted average of 682, representing 250 mg$Cm^{-2}$ per year and 38 400 tons per year of photosynthesized carbon for the whole lake.

남태평양 축 라군의 초미소 식물플랑크톤 분포 특성 (Picophytoplankton Distribution in the Chuuk Lagoon South Pacific)

  • 열대 남태평양에 위치한 축 라군에서 flow cytometry와 HPLC를 이용 초미소 식물플랑크톤 조사를 하였다. Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus 그리고 picoeukaryotes의 풍도와 지시색소 분포 양상을 분석하였고 추정된 탄소 생체량에서의 기여율을 조사하였다. 남세균인 Synechococcus와 Prochlorococcus는 축 라군에서 대비되는 분포 특성을 보였다. Synechococcus는 웨노섬 주변 정점에서 높은 풍도를 보인 반면, 북동수로 쪽으로 멀어지며 풍도가 감소하였다. Prochlorococcus는 이와 반대의 분포특성을 나타냈으며, picoeukaryotes는 특정적인 수역별 변화를 보이지 않았다. Prochlorococcus의 지시색소인 divinyl chlorophyll a (Chl. $\alpha2$)는 $1.2\sim180.3\;ng\;L^{-1}$의 농도 범위를 보였으며, 웨노섬 주변 정점들보다 북동수로에 접한 정점들에서 높게 나타났다. 이는 Prochlorococcus의 풍도와 유사한 분포로서, chl. a2가 생체량의 좋은 지표임을 나타냈다. 반면 zeaxanthin은 $61.4\sim135.8\;ng\;L^{-1}$의 농도 범위로 정점별 변화가 풍도변화에 비해 작은 특징을 보였는데 이는 Prochlorococcus로부터 유래된 zeaxanthin의 영향으로 판단된다. Synechococcus의 추정된 탄소 생체량은 전체 초미소 식물플랑크톤 생체량의 68%를 차지하였다. Prochlorococcus와 picoeukaryotes는 각각 17.1%와 14.9%의 생체량을 나타냈다.

Fresh water impact on chlorophyll a distribution at northeast coast of the Bay of Bengal analyzed through in-situ and satellite data

  • The distribution of phytoplankton pigments were studied bimonthly at four stations from the mouth of Mahanadi River at Paradip to the 36.7km off coast in Bay of Bengal during April 2001 to December 2002. Bottom depth was shallower than 40m in all stations. The pigment concentration of Chl-a was measured. It increased from surface to bottom in the water column. The water column integrated chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) varied between 6.1 and $48.5mg{\cdot}m-^2$ with peaks during monsoon period (Aug & Oct). Spatial distribution of salinity depended strongly on freshwater runoff. The salinity was 5psu at river mouth and 25.15psu at offshore in monsoon period; however it was 30psu at the river mouth in summer. We found a linear relationship between the amount of river discharge and integrated Chl-a in coastal region from 2 years observations. Extending this result, we analyzed rainfall and coastal Chl-a using satellite data. The relationship between the river discharge and monthly accumulated rainfall estimated from TRMM and others data sources was analyzed in 2001 and 2002 using Giovanni infrastructure provided by NASA. The result depended on the specified area on TRMM images; the river delta area had sharper relationship than wider rain catchments area. Moreover, the relationship between monthly averaged Chl-a derived from SeaWiFS and monthly accumulated rainfall estimated from TRMM was analyzed from 1998 to 2005. It was clear that the broom in monsoon period was strongly controlled by rainfall on river delta.

Changes in MCSST and Chlorophyll-a Off Sanriku Area (38-43N, 141-l50N) from NOAA/AVHRR and SeaWiFS Data

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the change of the spring bloom and oceanographic condition. The variation of pigment concentration derived from the satellite ocean color data has been analyzed. According to the movement of blooming area, blooming was very concerned with a rising trend of sea surface temperature and a supply of nutrients. A nutrient rich water carried by the Oyashio encounters with the warm Core ring, where mixings and blooms are observed. We examined the correlation by using the satellite observations of the temperature and chlorophyll-a for the spring seasons (May, June, July) of 1998 the off Sanriku area (38-43N, 141- l50E). Using the SeaWiFS data, we process the data into the level-3, which contains the geophysical value of chlorophyll-a. And chlorophyll-a data is mapped for the water between 110E and 160E, and 15N and 52N with a 0.08 * 0.05 degree grid for each image. And Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data is produced using the AVHRR onboard the NOAA. The SST is derived by the MCSST. Then, the data is mapped for the water as much as chi-a data. And these gridded image was made by detection of each water masses, which are Kuroshio Extension, the warm-core ring and the Oyashlo Intrusion, etc., using those satellite images to determine short term change. Off Sanriku is a place where warm-water pool and the Oyashio at-e mixed. When warm streamer has intruded in cold water, the volume of phytoplankton increases at the tip of warm streamer. Warm water streamer was trigger of occurring blooming. And also, SeaWiFS images provided as much information for the studies of chlorophyll-a concentrations in the surface.

인공위성 고도계 자료와 해색 위성 자료 기반의 동해 중규모 소용돌이 탐지 비교 (Comparison of Mesoscale Eddy Detection from Satellite Altimeter Data and Ocean Color Data in the East Sea)

  • 인공위성 자료를 활용한 중규모 소용돌이 탐지에는 해수면온도, 식물플랑크톤 클로로필-a 색소 농도, 해수면고도 등 다양한 해양 변수를 활용할 수 있다. 각 위성 해양 자료는 시 공간 해상도, 관측 방식 및 자료 처리 과정이 상이하기 때문에, 동일한 소용돌이에 대해서도 다른 탐지 결과를 유도할 수 있어, 인공위성 자료를 활용한 소용돌이 탐지에 대한 기초 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 해색 위성 자료, 위성 고도계 해수면고도 자료, 적외선 해수면온도 자료를 활용하여 동해 중규모 소용돌이를 탐지하고 그 결과를 상호 비교하였다. 연속된 해색 위성 클로로필-a 농도 영상으로부터 최대 상호 상관 계수를 통하여 산출한 표층 해류장과, 위성 고도계의 해수면고도 영상 자료로부터 산출한 지형류를 활용하여 동해 중규모 소용돌이를 탐지하였다. 소용돌이 탐지 결과를 상호 비교하기 위하여 1) 해색 영상과 고도계 영상이 동시에 소용돌이를 탐지한 경우, 2) 해색 영상과 해수면온도 영상에는 존재하나 고도계 자료는 탐지하지 못한 경우, 3) 해색 영상과 해수면온도 영상에는 소용돌이가 존재하지 않으나 고도계 자료에서는 존재하는 경우 등 세 가지 사례를 선택하였다. 이와 같은 세 가지 사례를 통하여 동해 중규모 소용돌이 탐지 시 인공위성 고도계 자료의 문제점 제기와 더불어, 해색 위성 자료와 적외선 해수면온도 자료의 한계점을 제시하였다. 또한 해양 현상과 인공위성 관측 원리에 대한 깊이 있는 이해를 기반으로 소용돌이 탐지 및 관련 연구가 진행되어야 함을 강조하였다.

탐진강댐 상류하천에서 수환경과 담수조류 (Water Environment and Freshwater Algae in the Upstream of the Tamjin River Dam)

  • 탐진강댐 상류 하천의 본류와 지류에서 부유조류 및 부착조류를 중심으로 조사하였다. DO는 9.0~9.2 mg $O_2/l$ 범위였고, pH와 전기전도도는 각각 7.0~7.1, $98{\sim}100{\mu}S/cm$ 범위였다. 수중 무기영양염 중 $NH_4$$NO_3$는 평균값이 각각 $40{\sim}56{\mu}g\;N/l$, $489{\sim}611{\mu}g\;N/l$ 범위로서 $NO_3$$NH_4$보다 9~15배 더 풍부하였다. SRP와 SRSi의 평균농도는 각각 $2{\mu}g\;P/l$, 1.6 mg Si/l로서 특히 Si는 강우가 집중된 하계에 다소 많았다. N/P 및 Si/P의 비는 각각 248~261, 640~740 범위로서 담수조류의 생장에 P가 제한영양염으로 추정되었다. 부유조류의 chl-a는 평균값이 $5{\sim}13{\mu}g/l$ 범위였다. 부착조류의 chl-a, 불활성색소 및 유기물 함량의 평균값은 본류에서 각각 $50.3mg/m^2$, $11.9mg/m^2$$11.5g/m^2$이었고, 지류에서 각각 $30.1mg/m^2$, $5.6mg/m^2$$7.8g/m^2$로서 본류가 지류보다 1.5~2.1배 높았다. 담수조류의 개체밀도로 본 주요 종조성은 규조류 Achnanthes linearis, A. minutissima, Fragilaria crotonensis, Gomphonema gracile 및 Tabellaria flocculosa였고 남조류는 Microcystis aeruginosa가 해당하였다. 분류군별 비율에서 식물 플랑크톤과 부착조류는 규조류>녹조류>남조류의 순이었고 다른 분류군에 비해 규조류가 월등히 많았다.

하계 강우기 섬진강 하구역의 일차생산력 및 식물플랑크톤 색소조성 변화 (Primary Productivity and Pigments Variation of Phytoplankton in the Seomjin River Estuary during Rainy Season in Summer)

  • 섬진강 하구역의 강우기 동안 일차생산력은 12~1,169 mgC $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$으로 넓은 범위를 보였으며 강우 전과 후의 일차생산력의 변화는 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 강우 전인 7월 6일에 가장 높은 생산력을 보였으며 상류정점에서 높은 일차생산력과 생리 활성도를 보였다. 집중호우 직후 일차 생산력은 현저히 감소하였으며 이러한 이유는 탁수의 영향이 전 수층으로 전이 되면서 식물플랑크톤 광합성 기작에 제한영향으로 적용되었음을 판단할 수 있다. 집중호우 19일 후의 일차생산력은 강우의 영향으로 유입된 탁도가 줄고 유광층 깊이가 깊어지면서 하류정점에서부터 회복되는 결과를 보였다. 또한 강우 전보다 식물플랑크톤의 생리활성도가 매우 좋음을 알 수 있었다. HPLC로 분석된 색소 조성 결과 Fuco가 전 정점에서 우점하는 것으로 나타났으며 현미경 결과와 비교 시 유사하였다. 일차 생산력과 HPLC로 분석된 지표색소 결과를 비교하였을 시 규조류가 일차생산력에 가장 큰 기여를 했을 것으로 보인다. 본 연구에서는 하계 한반도의 우세한 기후적 특징인 강우기 동안 섬진강 하구역에서 일차생산력의 시공간적 변동과 식물플랑크톤의 군집구조의 변화특성을 파악하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 강우기 섬진강 수 생태 환경 변화를 이해하기 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단되며, 향후 수질관리 및 수 생태계 에너지 흐름과 물질순환에 대한 연구를 위한 유용한 자료로 활용될 것으로 사료된다.
