  • Purpose: This is a mixed method study to understand the experience regarding the job satisfaction of Physician Assistant (PA) male nurses. Methods: First, factors influencing job satisfaction were analyzed using quantitative approach and job adaptation processes by qualitative research was done through interviews. Finally both of the collected data were comprehensively compared. Results: The factors which had the greatest influence on job satisfaction in the regression analysis were job stress (${\beta}=-.49$, p<.001) and job identity (${\beta}=.46$, p<.001) and the explanatory power explaining these variables was 58% (Adj. $R^2=.58$). The results of qualitative research were categorized using the same four variables with qualitative research variables. Five themes in job satisfaction, three themes in job identity, five themes in job stress and six themes in job value were identified by content analysis. Conclusion: This finding identified that the job stress and job identity were important variables related to job satisfaction. Therefore, the factors influencing job identity have to be strengthened, and a systematic management and interest to develop them are necessary.

There was no statistical difference between general characteristics and job satisfaction. There were statistical difference between unmarried subjects and organizing system(p<.05), inadequate compensation(p<.01). In the results of multivariate regression analysis, adjusted $R^2$ value was 0.567. The model fit was 56.7%. Job satisfaction was low in the insufficient job control and inadequate organizing system. It is hospital policies for the reduction of job stress(particularly, insufficient job control, and organizing system stress).

  • The intention of this study was to investigate relationship of PA (Physician Assistant) nurses' workplace bullying, burnout and emotional intelligence. Research respondents were 150 PA nurses who are working at 19 different hospitals from 5 cities and provinces and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 program. This study discovered that 20.7% of PA nurses had experienced workplace bullying and 54.7% had witnessed workplace bullying. The workplace bullying scored 2.14 (on a 4-point scale), emotional intelligence scored 4.88 (on a 7-point scale), and burnout scored 3.22 (on a 7-point scale). As a result of correlation analysis, as workplace bullying was higher, the level of burnout was greater, while as the emotional intelligence was higher, the level of burnout was lower. Thus, there is a need for improvement plan for bullying in workplace to alleviate PA nurses' burnout and strategy to improve emotional intelligence and develop education and program.

  • This study was attempted to identify the status of the work of the PA and provide the direction and evidence of policy making on the PA scheme. A convergence study was conducted to analyze a total of 23 articles of papers and Internet news through systematic review methodology. A literature search was performed using KISS, NDSL, RISS, National assembly library, and 11 major domestic daily newspapers and Youth Medical Newspaper. The analysis of eight papers showed that the PA's work-related exhaustion, job stress, unclear scope of work and lack of regulations reduced job satisfaction. Through 15 press articles, it was understood that it was urgent to establish a legal system and education system for qualifications and work as professional medical personnel amid a conflict of positive and negative opinions of related agencies. In order to increase the utilization of PA in the future, it is necessary to secure institutional devices suitable for Korean affairs and prepare educational programs.

  • Hospitals in Korea have been increasingly using physician assistants (PA) as an alternative way of dealing with the shortage of residents. However, some incidents of a Physician's Assistant practicing beyond their legal scope require closer examination of the current PA's roles and functions. This study is a web-based survey designed towards targeting physician assistants in Korea (KPA) who practice delegated tasks under a physician's license. Currently, there are 2,125 KPAs working in 141 general hospitals and medical centers. Data from 704 nurses from who responded to the questionnaire were analyzed with descriptive statistics using the SPSS 12.0 program. Their mean age is 32.5 years with 8-10 years of clinical experiences, with males being more likely to be a PA. Despite of KPAs providing medical services and performing invasive procedures, only 13% of KPAs are licensed APNs (advanced practice nurse). KPAs have a low job satisfaction due to a lack of rewards and the necessity for providing illegal practices, and are experiencing identity confusion. The current KPA system is a transitional product of the change from the hierarchial structure to a more collaborative relationship between the medical and nursing departments. Providing adequate education and training, establishing protocols with legal protection, and developing professional independent scope of care are recommended to deliver safe and efficient medical services.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the nationwide operational status of the professional medical support staffs (PMSS) who practice the expanded roles in the hospital setting. Methods: The data were obtained through survey from 36 hospitals with over 500 beds from 25th May to 12th July 2016. Data from 1,666 PMSS were analyzed. Results: Since the job titles varied, we classified them into 5 groups according to their roles; advanced practice nurse, clinical nurse expert, PA (physician assistant), coordinator, and others. There were differences in the operation status of PMSSs depending on the region, nurse staffing grade and number of hospital beds. Qualification criteria varied from hospital to hospital, and almost half of the hospitals didn't have any qualification standards for them. There were differences in age, educational level, clinical careers, rewards, and job satisfaction in 5 groups. Especially PA group had low salary, poorer working conditions, more difficulties in performing their work, and lower job satisfaction than other groups. Most PMSS (99.5%) were using a delegated prescription authority, however only 68.3% had job description and 19.9% had documented delegated role. Conclusion: Adequate training curriculum, documented delegated roles, and the protocols for legal protection and efficient medical services are needed.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) provides the most accurate and quickest diagnosis of epilepsy. It is also an important examination for the real-time evaluation of brain function and seizures, no matter where. In the field of epilepsy, it is appropriate for a clinical pathologist with considerable knowledge of EEG and clinical experience to perform the role of a Physician Assistant (PA). The electrode attachment method is based on the international 10-20 system. The EEG reading is mainly taken by longitudinal bipolar montage. However, a reading using only one montage may result in an error. Hence, two or more montages should be used for readings according to the clinical situation. In the EEG, electric potentials are seen as contour lines. The most important principle in EEG reading is under-reading, not over-reading. The higher the repetitions of the EEG recording, the greater the sensitivity of the reading. For a good reading, the EEG recording must be of good quality. So, the relationship between the neurologist and the EEG technician is very important. In the future, it is expected that the field of activities of the EEG technician with abundant EEG reading experience and clinical practical knowledge will be further expanded.
