This study was carried out to investigate adsorption characteristics of residual pesticides on an adsorbent. $Bauxsol^{TM}$ and mackban-stone as adsorbent were used. Analytical method for residual pesticides was established by GC/NPD and $GC/{\mu}ECD$. Pesticides used in this study were ${\alpha}$-endosulfan, ${\beta}$-endosulfan, pendimethalin and chlorpyrifos-methyl, fenitrothion, and recovery rates were more than 97%. Adsorption rate on an adsorbent was decreased in order of endosulfan, chlorpyrifos-methyl, pendimethalin, fenitrothion. Organochlorine pesticides showed higher removal rate than the other pesticides. $Bauxsol^{TM}$ gave both chemical decomposition and physical adsorption. Mackban-stone gave only physical adsorption on the other hand. The high pH and chloric ions structure of eluted solution have greatly affected at chemical resolution. The removal rate of pesticides was increased due to the physical property of adsorbent, i.e. high porosity. The above adsorbent is to be a candidate to remove residual pesticides in water and pond of links.

Composite membranes were prepared by the solution casting method from sulfonated poly(etheretherketone)(sPEEK) and imidazole and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) to enhance the electrolytic properties of the membrane. TGA measurements showed that physical crosslinking due to acid-base interactions improved the thermal resistance to the desulfonation of sulfonic acid groups of the composite membrane and the addition of PWA enhanced the resistance to thermal decomposition of the composite membrane. The acid-base interaction decreased the water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the sPEEK/imidazole composite membranes. The addition of PWA increased the proton conductivities while it decreased the water uptake and methanol permeability of sPEEK/imidazole/PWA composite membranes. Therefore, the selectivity of the composite membranes was enhanced by the addition of PWA.
The purpose of this study was to understand of water quality characteristics of lake Paldang, especially at a certain representative site, right in front of Paldang dam ($P_2$ site) and to propose the directions of water quality management of lake Paldang. Water characteristics at $P_2$ site was investigated by principle components analysis and the Pearson correlation coefficient analysis. Also, seasonality was identified by the Kruskal-Wallis test and long term trend of nutrients and chlorophyll-a was analyzed by seasonal decomposition method at lake Paldang statistically. The primary factor affecting on water quality at $P_2$ site was identified as nutrients, while physical parameters, such as rainfall and inflow rate were also important factors. At the result of linear regression analysis particulate organic phosphorus (POP) vs total phosphorus (TP) showed very high correlation of 0.78. TP loading was increased annually from 1995 to 2006. Chlorophyll-a and nutrients show seasonality at $P_2$ site. Long term trend of Chlorophyll-a was increased by increase of TP at lake Paldang.
This research presents an evaluation of the weathering and deterioration state of the Wanggung-ri five-storied stone pagoda in the Iksan (National Treasure No. 289) and suggests conservational schemes. A deterioration map of the pagoda was drawn from the aspects of petrological, physical, chemical, biological, structural and artificial weathering. The rock properties consisting of the pagoda were medium-grained biotite granite that had leucocratic phenocryst developed in parts. The body of each story suffered severely from the secondary contamination that turned the colors into light grey, pitch dark, yellowish brown, and reddish brown as well as granular decomposition, exfoliation and peel-off. The roof stones were heavy exfoliated or peeled off in most of the cases. In addition to the fine cracks, there were layered cracks on the corners. The roof stones of the3rd and 4th story in the north and west side had some stones fall-off, while those of the 2ndstory in the north side had steel reinforcement filled for a fixing purpose. Those of the 5th story showed big gaps that must have originated from cracks and were easily subject to granular decomposition and rainfall. The inside clay filler was missing in the lower part of the roof stones of the 4th and 5th story and the supporting stones, which were thus covered by light grey or pitch dark sediments. The contact area of the materials was about 70 % in the parts where there was a space due to the filler missing and washigher than 90 % in the lower parts of the pagoda. About 90 % or more of the roof stones surface of each story were covered by aerial plants that formed a thick biological mat. Thus it seemed necessary to come up with the conservational measures to remove the plans living on the surface of the stone materials, with the plans to prevent rain from falling inside, and with the water repellent and hardening treatments to postpone the surface weathering of the rock properties. All those measures and plans must be based on the results of long-term monitoring and thorough detail investigations.
Treatment of vinyl monomers onto silk fiber modifies the properties of the original silk fiber considerably. This field has been the subject of investigation by many workers using chemical and radiation initiation. Many studies on the reaction conditions, polymerization mechanism, physical properties and practical performances of methacrylamide-treated silk fiber have been continued. However, the polymerization mechanism has not been clearly revealed yet and this remains ambiguously whether the grafting is formed on fiber or not. In general, it has been accepted that free radicals were formed and vinyl monomers were polymerized in silk fibroin by graft polymerization mechanism, while active sties were varied by the types of monomer and initiator as well as by the reaction conditions. On the other hand, there is another argument on polymerization mechanism, in which monomers are polymerized and impregnated in the internal side of the fiber by homopolymerization. Though a large number of analytical methods are used to examine the polymerization mechanism of methacrylamide-treated silk fiber, the results on the basis of thermal analysis are merely reported in this paper. In differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, the thermal decomposition behaviors of the methacrylamie-treated silk fibers were determined and compared to those of the controlled silk fibers. DSC curves obtained from the methacrylamide-treated silk fibers showed double peaks at around 290$^{\circ}C$ (A peak) and 320$^{\circ}C$ (B peak) which are attributed to the thermal decomposition of the methacrylamide polymer and silk fibroin fiber, respectively. The temperature of A and B peak shifted to higher value with the increase of add-on. Also, the moisture regain of the treated silk fibers increased with add-on.

This basic study is focused on the physically removal method of carbon dioxide from the decomposition of ammonium carbarmate to prevent the recombination of ammonium salts. A basic visual experimental set-up was designed and constructed to observe the recombination phenomena from the proper composition of ammonia gas, carbon dioxide gas, and compressed air dilution gas. To quantify the recombination phenomena, a simple device was designed to measure the weight change under severe cases for three different tube sizes. The temperature and pressure in the visual tube and the volumetric flow rates of the nitrogen dilution gas were studied and the conditions to avoid recombination were analyzed according to mean free path theory. Diffusivity values based on the Chapman-Enskog theory were calculated from the experimental data. These value may serve as an index for the prevention of recombination.
Nanosized $TiO_2$ particles were prepared by hydrothermal method from the aqueous peroxotitanate solution using the different carboxylic acids as an additives. The physical properties of prepared nanosized $TiO_2$ particles were investigated and we also examined the activity of $TiO_2$ particles as a photocatalyst on the decomposition of methylene blue. The major phase of all the prepared $TiO_2$ particles was an anatase structure regardless of carboxylic acids and a rutile peak was observed above $700^{\circ}C$. The photocatalytic activity increased with an increase of hydrocarbon number of carboxylic compounds and the highest activity was shown on the catalysts which was prepared using succinic acid as an additive and calcined at $500^{\circ}C$.

Recently, safety diagnosis of the existing structures has been emerged as important issue. In particular, systematical and precise safety diagnostics for steel structures for power substation, have been required. Steel structures for power substation are under the periodical impact loads from operations of gas insulated switchgear. These loading condition accelerates damage and aging of structure. The objective of this research is to evaluate damage of structure under periodical impact loads. To evaluate the integrity of structures as organizing mathematical models including the dynamic characteristics of structures, Frequency Domain Decomposition method was choiced and an algorism was proposed. For verifying this methods and algorism, a mathematical model is composed of the development of a variety of reverse analysis and a signal processing technology reflecting physical damage of structures. A series of analysis and test results indicatge that proposed method has a confidence for applying a filed test. Therefore, it is expected to be able to take advantage of system identification to detect damage for the maintenance and management of steel structures under periodical impact loads such as power substation.
Background: The Arctic permafrost stores enormous amount of carbon (C), about one third of global C stocks. However, drastically increasing temperature in the Arctic makes the stable frozen C stock vulnerable to microbial decomposition. The released carbon dioxide from permafrost can cause accelerating C feedback to the atmosphere. Soil organic matter (SOM) composition would be the basic information to project the trajectory of C under rapidly changing climate. However, not many studies on SOM characterization have been done compared to quantification of SOM stocks. Thus, the purpose of our study is to determine soil properties and molecular compositions of SOM in four different Arctic regions. We collected soils in different soil layers from 1) Cambridge Bay, Canada, 2) Council, Alaska, USA, 3) Svalbard, Norway, and 4) Zackenberg, Greenland. The basic soil properties were measured, and the molecular composition of SOM was analyzed through pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS). Results: The Oi layer of soil in Council, Alaska showed the lowest soil pH and the highest electrical conductivity (EC) and SOM content. All soils in each site showed increasing pH and decreasing SOC and EC values with soil depth. Since the Council site was moist acidic tundra compared to other three dry tundra sites, soil properties were distinct from the others: high SOM and EC, and low pH. Through the py-GC/MS analysis, a total of 117 pyrolysis products were detected from 32 soil samples of four different Arctic soils. The first two-axis of the PCA explained 38% of sample variation. While short- and mid-hydrocarbons were associated with mineral layers, lignins and polysaccharides were linked to organic layers of Alaska and Cambridge Bay soil. Conclusions: We conclude that the py-GC/MS results separated soil samples mainly based on the origin of SOM (plants- or microbially-derived). This molecular characteristics of SOM can play a role of controlling SOM degradation to warming. Thus, it should be further investigated how the SOM molecular characteristics have impacts on SOM dynamics through additional laboratory incubation studies and microbial decomposition measurements in the field.
Weak target detection and localization in the presence of loud surface ship noise is a critical problem for matched field processing (MFP) in shallow water. For stationary sources, each signal component of received signal can be separated and interference can be suppressed using eigen space analysis schemes. However, source motion, in realistic cases, causes spreading of signal energies in their subspace. In this case, eigenvalues of target and interfere signal components are mixed and hard to be separated with usual phone space eigenvector decomposition (EVD) approaches. Our technique is based on mode space and utilizes the difference in their physical characteristics of surface and submerged sources. Performing EVD for modal cross spectral density matrix, interference components in the mode amplitude subspace can be classified and eliminated. This technique is demonstrated with synthetic data, and results are discussed.
