  • This study aims to recognize that creative thinking methodologies can be adopted in the spatial design. The concept of 'Convergent' and 'Divergent' used in structure of intellect model by Guilford is chosen to understand the character of creative thinking methodologies. Technical and physical contradictions is analyzed for '40 inventive principles' of TRIZ and spatial design works. Through this study, we recognize that the creative thinking methodologies consist of analysis, idea generation and evaluation phase. The psychological inertia that limits the creative thinking should be move away from solving problem, and convergent and divergent thinking have peculiarities to be adopted in condition and to be harmonized, and to set the direction of solving technical problems through to reach the target point integrated way of thinking is needed. '40 inventive principles' by Altshuller are based on engineering and useful in many areas of fields. However some principles are not accepted in design process because these are not considered in design field and paradigm is changed from machine to nature. Nowadays, nature is a prime issue for sustainable human life, because it has sustainable recycle structure and saving energy ways. Thus, creative thinking, including TRIZ is useful in design education and progress, and should be an essential element to get a new design paradigm.

  • Rolling bearings are assorted one of the most important machine elements. The various functions of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required to improve rolling bearing lubrication. The two conditions for optimum grease synthesis were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) program by using dropping points and OIT values respectively. And the optimized two urea/ether oil greases were synthesized to compare the performance. The typical physical properties of grease were investigated. And life test of these greases was conducted by rolling bearing grease life tester. The characteristics of the greases before and after life test were investigated using FTIR, microscope, SEM, TG/DSC, OIT and TAN meter. The optimized two greases showed longer life time than typical urea/ether oil grease. The optimized grease by means of OIT value showed higher performance such as long life time, low TAN value and high oil bleeding amount in comparison with the optimized grease using dropping point.

  • This paper presents the development of a virtual forging factory framework. The technologies of virtual reality and relational database had been integrated in the developed framework using Microsoft $Windows^{(R)}$ programming as the main technique so as to emulate a physical forging factory. The developed virtual forging factory consists of forging cells and a forging cell is comprised of forging machine, forging die, and forging operations forming a forging production line. The technology of virtual reality had been successfully adopted in the production simulation of manufacturing such as CNC and robotics. However, the application in virtual forging factory seems to have not been studied yet. Potential application of a virtual forging factory can be beneficial to (1) computer aided instruction, (2) shorten the learning curve of a novice, (3) remote diagnosis and monitoring when remote monitoring and control technology and signal inspection is considered, (4) improve adverse forging environment when remote forging technology is applied, and (5) virtual reality application.

  • The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surface. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface contours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated depth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in addition to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamometer. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admittance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.

  • This paper proposes a robust tension control algorithm for the let-off and take-up system driven by servo motor which is robust to disturbance and tension variation by using SVR(Support Vector Regression). Quality of textile goods in fiber manufacturing process highly depends on control of let-off, take-up and tension which are essential for constant tension control of yarn and textile fabrics and correct length of them. The physical properties of textile fabrics are very sensitive to several factors(temperature, humidity, radius change of warp beam etc.) which result in tension change. Rapid development of fiber manufacture machine for higher productivity requires control system for let-off, take-up and tension for robustness to sharp tension-variation and quick response. The validity and the usefulness of the proposed algorithm are thoroughly verified through numerical simulation.

  • This study reports the selection of dependent variables for momentum equations in general curvilinear coordinates. Catesian, covariant and contravariant velocity components were examined for the dependent variable. The focus of present study is confined to staggered grid system Each dependent variable selected for momentum equations are tested for several flow fields. Results show that the selection of Cartesian and covariant velocity components intrinsically can not satisfy mass conservation of control volume unless additional converting processes ore used. Also, Cartesian component can only be used for the flow field in which main-flow direction does not change significantly. Convergence rate for the selection of covariant velocity component decreases quickly as with the increase of non-orthogonality of grid system. But the selection of contravariant velocity component reduces the total mass residual of discretized equations rapidly to the limit of machine accuracy and the solutions are insensitive to the main-flow direction.

  • Along with the increasing demand for automatic and mechanical tunnel excavation methods in Korea, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method of tunnel excavation has become increasingly popular. However, in spite of this rising demand, few studies have been performed on the TBM method, in Korea. For this reason, this study focused on evaluation of the applicability of TBM performance prediction models based on field data in order to contribute to the basic and essential parts of TBM designation and the TBM method of tunnel excavation in Korea. These rock properties can be defined as the mechanical and physical factors of rock that have an influence on a disc cutter's ability to cut rock, and provide information for the evaluation of the applicability of field data. Based on outcomes from these tests, applicability of the prediction model was evaluated and the predicted performance of a TBM was compared with real field data obtained from four different TBM construction sites in Korea.

  • We apply a machine learning algorithm, artificial neural network, to the search for gravitational-wave signals associated with short gamma-ray bursts. The multi-dimensional samples consisting of data corresponding to the statistical and physical quantities from the coherent search pipeline are fed into the artificial neural network to distinguish simulated gravitational-wave signals from background noise artifacts. Our result shows that the data classification efficiency at a fixed false alarm probability is improved by the artificial neural network in comparison to the conventional detection statistic. Therefore, this algorithm increases the distance at which a gravitational-wave signal could be observed in coincidence with a gamma-ray burst. We also evaluate the gravitational-wave data within a few seconds of the selected short gamma-ray bursts' event times using the trained networks and obtain the false alarm probability. We suggest that artificial neural network can be a complementary method to the conventional detection statistic for identifying gravitational-wave signals related to the short gamma-ray bursts.

  • This paper describes a study of the influence of shield tunnel construction on the displacements and stresses induced in the linings of existing nearby parallel tunnels. The paper presents a brief review of a set of laboratory scale model research programme investigating the influence of tunnel proximity and alignment, liner stiffness on the nature of the interactions between closely spaced tunnels in clay. A total of two sets of carefully controlled physical model tests were performed. A cylindrical test tank was developed and used to produce clay samples of Speswhite kaolin. In each of the tests, three model tunnels were installed in order to conduct two interaction exts that have been carried out to investigate the interaction problem between parallel tunnels. The results of these tests are compared with the results of finite element analysis to investigate the techniques that must be used to obtain reliable numerical solutions to this type of problem.
