  • Purpose: To perform a comparative study on curing shrinkage according to the thickness of photopolymerization resin. Methods: Stainless steel molds of 2, 4, and 6 mm heights were prepared. The 2, 4, and 6 mm-height molds were classified as the 2H, 4H, and 6H groups, respectively. A photopolymerization resin was injected into the stainless steel mold. Photopolymerization was carried out using a photopolymer machine. During photopolymerization, the wavelength and intensity of 400~405 nm were set to 10, the highest intensity among 1~10. Photopolymerization was performed for 30 min per specimen (each group=10). The inner and outer areas of the specimen were measured. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis H test (α=0.05). Results: In terms of the inner and outer diameters of the photopolymerization resin specimen, the 2H group contracted the most, whereas the 6H group contracted the least. A statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The amount of light irradiation of the photopolymerization resin must be adjusted according to the thickness.

  • Two diketones, 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione(PD) and 2,3-butanedione (BD) were investigated as new visible light photosensitizers for a dental resin composite of bis-GMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. And the photopolymerization efficiency of mixed photosensitizers, PD-CQ and DA-CQ, was studied. Photopolymerization effect of photosensitizers were compared with that of camphorquinone(CQ), the most widely used photosensitizer. The photopolymerization efficiency of bis-GMA containing the photosensitizer increased with irradiation time. The increase was in the order: BD < CQ < PD. The photopolymerization efficiency of this mixture was not so efficient as CQ or PD.

  • The photopolymerization efficiency and surface hardness of composite resin containing 1,2-phenylpropanedione (PD) and diacetyl (DA) as photoinitiators were studied by IR and Vickers hardness and the results were compared with that of camphorquinone (CQ). Relative photopolymerization efficiency of the photoinitiators increased in the order of DA < CQ < PD. Vickers hardness of composite resin containing the photoinitiators increased in the order of CQ < PD < DA. Thus, PD is a new visible light photoinitiator for dental composite resin with higher photopolymerization efficiency and surface hardness than that of CQ. Mechanical properties such as Vickers hardness, diametral tensile strength, and flexural strength of the experimental resin composite prepared by addition of the photosensitizer into a resin of bis-GMA improved with increasing the photosensitizer content and irradiation time. The resin composite of bis-GMA containing DA or PD shows better mechanical properties than that of CQ.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know the availability of two photosensitizers, PD, DA, as a photosensitizer instead of CQ in UDMA dental composite resin. We want to know photopolymerization effect of UDMA unfilled resin and surface hardness of composite resin containing PD and DA were compared with those of CQ, most widely used photosensitizer for dental composite resins. Methods: The photopolymerization effect of UDMA studied by FT-IR spectroscopy increased with irradiation time and the amount of photosensitizer. Knoop hardness of experimental composite resins prepared by the addition of the photosensitizer content and irradiation time. Results: The relative photopolymerization effect of UDMA increased in the order of PD > CQ > DA. The composite resin of UDMA containing DA or PD, which shows better Knoop hardness than that containing CQ. Conclusion: PD and DA show as effective photosensizers, suitable for UDMA dental composite resin compare with a higher efficiency than CQ.

  • Two t-amines, N,N-dimethylaniline (MA), N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (MPT), were investigated as new visible light amine initiators for a dental resin composite of UDMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. Three t-amines mixed with three photosensitizers, camphorquinone(CQ), 1-phenyl-1,2-propane dione(PD) and diacetyl (DA), respectively. And then this mixtures are added to resin monomer, UDMA. Photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA was studied through the use of FT-IR absorption spectroscopy. The photopolymerization effect of amine initiators were compared with that of 4-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (AEM), the most widely used photoinitiator. The photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA containing the amine initiator increased with irradiation time. The relative polymerization efficiency containing the CQ photosensitizer increase was in the order: AEM < MPT < MA. And the relative polymerization efficiency containing the PD photosensitizer increase was in the order: MPT < AEM < MA. This result shows that MA is most efficient amine initiator with CQ and PD.

  • We fabricated a polymer sub-microstructure for optical device application by two-photon-induced laser lithography technique. Polymer pattern could be minimized as small as ${\sim}100\;nm$. The photopolymerization resin contains laser-dye, thus promising a high level of the optical gain. We utilized the lithography technique to the photonic crystal application, where the template of the two-dimensional photonic crystal was modified by polymer gain medium as defect-shape and line-shape orientations. Photonic band gap effect from polymer-doped photonic crystals is expected to exploit the application such as organic solid-state laser device.

  • The photoreactive prepolymers with multifunctional cinnamate and bisphenol Atype cinnamate groups that could perform photodimerization without photoinitiators were synthesized by the reaction of t-cinnamic acids (CAs) and epoxy resins. Their photocure reaction rates and the extent of reaction conversion were measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and these increased with the intensity of UVirradiation. The experimental data of these reaction rates showed the characteristics of nth-order kinetics reaction, and all kinetic constants of each photoreactive polymer with this equation were summarized. Although the GTR-1800-HCA and KWG1-EP-HCA with hydroxyl group substituted cinnamate showed lower reaction conversion rates and rate constant than GTR-1800-CA and KWG1-EP-CAwith an unsubstituted cinnamate group, GTR-1800-MCAand KWG1-EP-MCAwith methoxy group substituted cinnamate showed similar and higher reaction conversion rates than the former, respectively. These results were explained in terms of segmental mobility for photopolymerization by molecular interactions.
