An economic and efficient system for measuring drop sizes was developed. Pattern recognition technique was used with conventional oil-bath sampling and photographic method. The system was designed to measure and count relatively large number of drops in a very short time, and also to filter out abnormal images such as drops in contact or overlap as well as odd-shaped foreign materials. In this measuring system, most important error originates from the process of converting the original image to the binary image. If the photograph contains a large number of spray drops, the relative size of the pixel to the drops is not infinitesimally small; thus the proper choice of threshold level to convert the original image to the binary image becomes very important. In present case, most of the images lay in one of the two separate bands of brightness level and the arithmetic mean of the most popular brightness levels from each band was chosen as the threshold level. Present image processing system reduces the subjective error by the observers in counting and measuring drops and turns out to be substantially effective. The processing time can be further reduced by improving the hardware system concerned with the digital image coding.
This study aims to discriminate differences in natural landscapes between the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and the Jirisan National Park in Korea, using functions of content-based image retrieval such as texture, shape, and color. Digital photographs of each National Park were taken and selected. The low-level functions of photographic images were reduced to orthogonally rotated five factors. Based on the reduced factors, a linear decision boundary was obtained between Cairngorms landscapes and Jirisan landscapes. As a result, the discriminant function significantly delineated two groups, resulting in $x^2=63.40$ with df=5(p<0.001). Both the eigenvalue 2.417 and the value of wilks' lambda 0.29 supported that the most proportion of total variability came from the differences between the means of discriminant function of groups. It was estimated that four independent variables explained about 70.7% of total variance of dependent variable. The variable with the largest effect on landscapes was far region-related factor(r=1.07), followed by near region-related factor (r=0.90). A total of 90.7% of cross-validated grouped cases were correctly classified. It was interpreted that far distant regions, as well as near distant regions, had sufficient discrimination power for landscape classification between the Cairngorms National Park and the Jirisan National Park, so that landscape identity of the National Park over cultures was revealed by skylines in a most effective way. Relatively fewer factors making visual landscapes were effectively used to classify natural landscapes of the National Parks which had different semantics.

It is important for hydrographers to extract the accurate cross section of a river for the hydrographical analysis of the topography. Aerial photographs were used to extract the cross section of a river for the advantages of the accuracy and economical efficiency in this study, while the direct measurement has been used in existing studies. An ortho-rectified photo map using imageries taken by the PKNU 2 (High-resolution, multi-spectral, aerial photographic system developed by our laboratory) was generated using the surveyed data and a digital map. The cross section of a river that was obtained from the ortho-rectified by the surveyed Kinematic data of GPS was compared with the result using ImageStation stereo-plotter of corp. Z/I Imaging. As a result of this study, the RMSE in the ortho-rect process using the surveyed GPS data was lowered as from 5.5788 pixels (about 2m) to 2.84 (about 1m) in comparison with it in the process using a digital map. The surveyed kinematic GPS in extraction of the cross section of a river was excellent as 6.6cm of the planimetric and precision in the confidence level of 95%. The correlation coefficient between the result from the using stereo-plotter and the extraction of cross section of a river using aerial photos was 0.8 hydrographical acquisition of it using PKNU 2 imagery will be possible.

Cleft palate is a congenital deformity condition with separation of the two sides of the lip resulting in nose deformity. Evaluation of surgical corrections and outcome assessments for nose deformity due to the cleft lip depends mainly on doctor's subjective judgment. An objective method for evaluation of the condition and surgical outcome of nose deformity due to the cleft palate is needed. This study aimed at objective assessment of a cleft palate nose deformity condition by analyzing the following parameters obtained from photographic images of a cleft palate patients: (1) angle difference between two nostril axes. (2) center of the nostril and distance between two centers. (3) overlapped area of two nostrils, and (4) the overlapped area ratio of the two nostrils. A regression equation of doctor's grades was obtained using the eight parameters. Three plastic surgeons gave us the grades for the each photographic image by 10 increments with maximum grade of 100. The average reproducibility of the grades given by the three plastic surgeons and the three laymen using the developed program was $10.8{\pm}4.6%$ and $7.4{\pm}1.8%$, respectively. Kappa values representing the degree of consensus of the plastic surgeons and the three laymen were 0.43 and 0.83. respectively. Correlation coefficient of the grades evaluated by the surgeons and obtained by the neural network was 0.798. In conclusion. the developed neural network model provided us better reproducibility and much better consensus than doctor's subjective evaluation in addition to objectiveness and easy application.

Purpose : This study was designed 1) to compare the perception of dental professionals and lay people with respect to minor variations in maxillary anterior tooth size and alignment and their relation to the surrounding soft tissues, and 2) to evaluate the normal tooth-gingiva topographical relationships in periodontally healthy young subjects, Materials and methods : Maxillary anterior teeth were intentionally diagrammed in varying degree of deviation with respect to one of three common anterior esthetic discrepancies including variations in crown length, shape of gingival margin, and length of interproximal contact, 17 images were generated to be preferentially selected by 2 groups consisting of dental professionals and lay people (total of 740). Smiling photographs of 120 dental students who had healthy periodontium were taken and the photographic images were analyzed to be classified as 17 kinds of altered image groups. Results : The results demonstrated noticeable difference between the varying levels of discrepancy. Both group preferred gingival margin of lateral incisor to be 0.5mm lower than that of central incisor. Lay people preferred the gingival margin shape that has 2/9 horizontal component of the crown width, while dental professionals preferred the gingival margin shape that has 1/9 horizontal component of the crown width. Lay people preferred longer length of the interproximal contact (two thirds of the crown length), whereas dental professionals preferred shorter length of the interproximal contact (half of the crown length). Photographic analysis of normal esthetic gingival topography revealed 2/9 horizontal component and short length of the interproximal contact which was of the hybrid nature of the preferences shared by lay people and dental professionals. Conclusion: The results of this study show that dental professionals and lay people demonstrated significant difference in their preference of dental esthetic components, which may then influence the decision making process by dental professionals with respect to designing the anterior esthetic gingival line.

In this paper, we present a perception-based tone mapping technique using histogram modification for displaying high dynamic range image. HDR (high dynamic range) tone mapping algorithms are used to display HDR image on LDR (low dynamic rnage) devices. Although perception-based tone mapping methods provides better performance, it dose not always produce good results for a wide variety of images. The proposed method reduces dynamic range by using the perception-based tone mapping function and histogram modification. A derivative of perception-based tone mapping function is used as constraint function of histogram and additional compensation process is performed. This method not only improves contrast by adopting different constraints on each pixel value, but also preserves more visual details. In order to prevent over enhancement, histogram modification technique is applied. Furthermore, it can control the rate of image contrast using control parameters. Subjective and objective evaluations show that proposed algorithm is better than existing algorithms.

In Ubiquitous communication environment, various conversions of images are essential, and most digital images are compressed by standard methods such as the Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) and Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) which are based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). In this paper, various image resizing algorithms in the DCT domain are analyzed, and a new image resizing algorithm, which shows superior performance compared with the conventional methods, is proposed. For arbitrary-ratio image resizing in the DCT domain, several blocks of $8{\times}8$ DCT coefficients are converted into one block using the conversion formula in the proposed algorithm, and the size of the inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) is decided optimally. The performance is analyzed by comparing the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) between original images and converted images. The performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the conventional algorithm, since the correlation of pixels in images is utilized more efficiently.
An algorithm of 3-D particle image velocimetry(3D-PIV) was developed for the measurement of 3-D velocity Held of complex flows. The measurement system consists of two or three CCD camera and one RGB image grabber. Flows size is $1500{\times}100{\times}180(mm)$, particle is Nylon12(1mm) and illuminator is Hollogen type lamp(100w). The stereo photogrammetry is adopted for the three dimensional geometrical mesurement of tracer particle. For the stereo-pair matching, the camera parameters should be decide in advance by a camera calibration. Camera parameter calculation equation is collinearity equation. In order to calculate the particle 3-D position based on the stereo photograrnrnetry, the eleven parameters of each camera should be obtained by the calibration of the camera. Epipolar line is used for stereo pair matching. The 3-D position of particle is calculated from the three camera parameters, centers of projection of the three cameras, and photographic coordinates of a particle, which is based on the collinear condition. To find velocity vector used 3-D position data of the first frame and the second frame. To extract error vector applied continuity equation. This study developed of various 3D-PIV animation technique.
Holospeckle interferometry, the combined technique of holographic interferometry and speckle photography, was applied to the measurement of 3-D contact deformation created by an indentor. This new tech$.$ nique makes possible to measure both in-plane and out-of-plane displacements from one photographic plate. In this study, the optical system based on image holography was set up. In order to enhance the size and the contrast of the speckle, a proper magnification and a low reference beam ratio was used as compared with the conventional holographic interferometry technique. This system shows the magnified and clear holographic interference fringe as well as Young's fringe patterns.tterns.
