  • We studied the emission characteristics of white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), which were fabricated using a two-wavelength method. The best blue emitting OLED and red emitting OLED characteristics were obtained at a concentration of 12 vol.% FIrpic and 1 vol.% $Bt_2Ir$(acac) in UGH3, respectively. And the optimum thickness of the total emitting layer was 25 nm. To optimize emission characteristics of white PHOLEDs, white PHOLEDs with red/blue/red, blue/red, red/blue and co-doping emitting layer structures were fabricated using a host-dopant system. In case of white PHOLEDs with co-doping structure, the best efficiency was obtained at a structure UGH3: 12 vol. % FIrpic: 1 vol.% $Bt_2Ir$(acac) (25 nm). The maximum brightness, current efficiency, power efficiency, external quantum efficiency, and CIE (x, y) coordinate were 13,430 $cd/m^2$, 40.5 cd/A, 25.3 lm/W, 17 % and (0.49, 0.47) at 1,000 $cd/m^2$, respectively.

  • A mixed host structure of TCTA and TPBI was used in orange emitting layer and host composition was critical to device performances of PHWOLEDs. PHWOLEDs with TPBI host in orange emitting layer showed high quantum efficiency of 10.3 % at $1000\;cd/m^2$ with little change of CIE coordinates of (0.32, 0.34) from $100\;cd/m^2$ to $10,000\;cd/m^2$.

  • We report simple structure red phosphorescent devices comprising only single organic layer structure. Maximum current efficiency of 9.44 cd/A and the driving voltage of 5.4 V are obtained in this single layer structure PHOLEDs, respectively. The mixed host system using electron transporting and hole transporting materials doped with $Ir(piq)_3$ provides such high efficiency and reasonable driving voltage. The principal to simplification is the direct charges injection from the metallic electrodes into mixed host materials.

  • We have developed novel bipolar host materials, designed to have both electron transporting and hole transporting abilities, which show significant increase in luminance efficiency and decrease in driving voltage of green phosphorescent OLEDs. In case of the best host material, CheilGH-3, the driving voltage was decreased 27 % at a given constant luminance of $1000cd/m^2$. Also the luminance efficiency was enhanced 44 % and the power efficiency was almost doubled compared to the reference device using CBP as a host.

  • We have fabricated phosphorescent white organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) with a spin-coated poly(Nvinylcarbazole) [PVK] host layer. Iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,$C^{2'}$]picolinate (FIrpic), tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) [$Ir(ppy)_3$], and tris(2-phenyl-1-quinoline)iridium(III) [$Ir(phq)_3$], were used as the blue, green, and red guest materials, respectively. The PVK was mixed with FIrpic, $Ir(ppy)_3$, and $Ir(phq)_3$ molecules in a chlorobenzene solution and spin-coated in order to prepare the emission layer; 3-(4-biphenylyl)-4-phenyl-5-(4-tertbutylphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole (TAZ) was used as an electron transport material. The resultant device structure was ITO/PVK:FIrpic:$Ir(ppy)_3:Ir(phq)_3$/TAZ/LiF/Al. The electroluminescence, efficiency, and electrical conduction characteristics of the WOLEDs based on the doped PVK host layer were investigated. The maximum current efficiency of the three wavelength WOLED with the doped PVK host was 19.2 cd/A.

  • The internal quantum efficiency of EL devices using fluorescent organic materials is limited within 25% because of the triplet excitons which can hardly emit light. So there has been considerable interest in finding ways to obtain light emission from triplet excitons. One approach has been to add phosphorescent compounds to one of the layers in an EL device. Then triplet excitons can transfer to these phosphorescent molecules and emit light. In this study, multilayer organic light-emitting devices with phosphorescent emitter, tris (2-phenylpyridine)iridium ($Ir(ppy)_3$) were prepared. The device exhibited power luminous efficiency of 1.07 1m/W at the luminance of $61.6\;cd/m^2$ diriven at the voltage of 9 V and current density of $1.9mA/cm^2$. At the luminance of $100\;cd/m^2$, the luminous efficiency was obtained 1.05 lm/W with the voltage of 9.5 V and the corrent density of $2.8\;mA/cm^2$.

  • We have fabricated simple triple-layer blue-emitting phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using different thicknesses (25 and 55 nm) of 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) electron transport layers. 1,1-bis[4-bis (4-methylphenyl)- aminophenyllcyclohexane (TAPC), bis[(4,6-di-fluorophenyl)-pyridinate-$N,C^{2'}$]picolinate (FIrpic) and N,N' -dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene (mCP) were used as hole transport, blue guest and host materials, respectively. The driving voltage, electroluminescence (EL) efficiency and emission characteristics of devices were investigated. The maximum EL efficiency was 20 cd/A in the device with 55 nm BCP layer, which efficiency was about 33% higher than the device with 25 nm BCP layer. The higher efficiency in the 55 nm BCP device resulted from the enhanced electron-hole balance. In the EL spectrum of blue phosphorescent OLED with BCP layer, the relative intensity between 470 and 500 nm peaks was related to the location of emission zone.

  • A polymeric host for triplet emitters composed of N-alkylcarbazole and tetramethylbenzene units was successfully synthesized. Efficient energy transfer was observed between this polymeric host and green phosphorescent dyes. The device fabricated using 5 wt% green 1 in the polymeric host as the emitting layer showed the best performance. Thin films of this host-guest system, exhibiting clear stripe patterns could be prepared through the LITI process. The patterned films were then used to fabricate electrophosphorescent devices, which show performance characteristics similar to those of spin-coated devices. The new host material is a good candidate to be used in polymer-based full-color electrophosphorescent light-emitting displays.
