  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning and nature of pain experienced among patients with chronic pain. The present study adopted a hermeneutic phenomenological method which was developed by van Manen. Method: The participants for this study were 4 men and 5 women, who were over the age of 20 with chronic pain more than 6 months. Data was collected by using in-depth interviews and observations from September, 2004 to December, 2004. The contents of the interviews were tape-recorded with the consent of the subject. Result: The essential themes that fit into the context of the 4 existential grounds of body, time, space and other people were 'untamed and unremitting pain', 'the body as an obstacle', 'continuity of suffering time as if the moment would never end', 'a narrow radial range of action' and 'separating from other people'. Conclusion: Patients with chronic pain experienced and perceived the world through the filter of their pain. It is necessary for nurses to understand the experiences of chronic pain patients and to provide more empathic, supportive care. Further research is needed on nursing interventions that could help chronic patients cope with and find the meaning in their suffering.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the structure of nursing needs during labor pain as perceived by women who have given birth. The phenomenological perspective of qualitative research theory guided the approach to the study. The sample consisted of 20 women who had undergone normal labor and had delivered a healthy baby at term. Collection of data was by means of in-depth interviews conducted 1-2 days after delivery in the admission room from March to may 1998. On average, the interviews lasted for about 30 minutes. Interviews were taken with the consent of the subjects. Data were analyzed by means of Giorgi's method and categorized according to the similarities of their contents. The investigator read the data repeatedly to identify themes and categories. Four categories were : 1) a sense of security 2) self esteem 3) willingness to learn 4) a sense of comfort. Under these categories there were twelve themes. I. A sense of security : (a) presence (b) conversation (c) touching II. Self esteem : (a) praise (b) encouragement (c) treating the women with respect (d) caregiver with good character III. Willingness to learn : (a) teaching (b) information IV. A sense of comfort : (a) self controlled pain relief (b) artificially controlled pain relief (c) skillfulness of caregiver The findings should sensitize nurses to the various needs of women in labor who are under their care. Further research should focus on developing instruments to assess the nursing needs of parturients. Researchers also need to identify ways to assess women's satisfaction with nursing needs.

  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the lived experiences in older Korean women with early stage of Parkinson's disease. The research question was "What is the meaning and nature of the older women's experiences who were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease?" Methods: In this study, we adopted van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach to find the lived experiences of older women diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Six older women diagnosed with Parkinson's disease within five years participated, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. Results: Five fundamental lifeworld themes and seven subthemes emerged from the data. The first theme of corporeality had three subthemes: 'being shocked by an unexpected diagnosis', 'fewer things can be done due to the illness' and 'lost my prettiness'. The second theme representing relationality was 'hiding the illness because of others' whispering'. The temporality theme was 'fear of symptom aggravation'. The spatiality theme was 'being placed in a blind spot of information'. The last existential theme of material had 'obsession with drugs'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide an in-depth understanding of older womens experiences of living with Parkinson's disease. The findings can help develop interventions specific to these group of women to provide sufficient emotional support and accurate information.

  • This study was a qualitative study performed to understand the nature and structure of the suicide attempt process experienced by maladjustment soldiers. The survey participants targeted 10 soldiers who entered 'Camp Green' due to lack of duty by the 00 Corps of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ Prefecture. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from October 2016 to September 2017 and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. The suicide attempt process by maladjusted soldiers was delineated into four categories such as 'A prison without bars', 'Walk on eggshells', 'A pretentious series of life', and 'A life of desperation'; 9 theme clusters; and 25 themes. As a result, maladjusted soldiers had a generally negative experience related to military culture. Soldiers who fail to adapt to military culture will show extreme behavior unless they are able to overcome their depression. Unless specific understanding of the suicide attempt process is attained, the suicide prevention policies of mission-maladjusted soldiers will be ineffective. The results of this study hope to serve as the basis for a suicide prevention and nursing intervention program.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the fundamental nature and meanings of the experiences of university students with regard to their smartphone usage in order to prevent smartphone addiction and provide guidelines to develop effective interventions. Nine university students who were currently enrolled in an university located in a Korean province participated in this study. In-depth interviews were conducted from June of 2012 to July of 2012, and data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological qualitative method. Those themes include 1) a desperate try to connect with others(exposing oneself without appropriate self-protection, seeking emotional comfort, hurt and mistrust); 2) excessive use of smartphone and loss of self-control(more smartphone usage over computer/over-immersion/excessive usage/habituation, loss of self-control); 3) psychological difficulties(excessive attachment and dependence, separation anxiety, clingingness, reduced patience) ; 4) threats to daily functioning (changes in priorities, regressed independent daily functioning, irregular daily patterns, health problems, interruptions from free messenger, academic difficulties); 5) potential for recovery(conflictual feelings and doubts over smartphone usage, importance of interpersonal(face-to-face) communications, willingness to cut down the use, hope for recovery). This study provided suggestions for the prevention effort against smartphone addiction.
