  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of the experience of adapting to the dietary treatment for hemodialysis patients. Methods: The data were collected through in-depth interviews of ten hemodialysis patients who have been dialyzed for longer than five months. Giorgi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis. Results: The findings included five constituents and 16 sub-constituents. The five constituents concerning diet therapy were: 'suffering', 'undergoing trial and error', 'understanding the need', 'finding alternatives', and 'realizing the meaning of dietary therapy.' Conclusion: The findings contribute to understanding the process of adapting to diet therapy. The results of this study may be utilized in assisting patients to understand the diet therapy process.

  • Most of high energy cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be produced by diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at supernova remnants (SNRs) within the Galaxy. Fortunately, nonthermal emissions from CR protons and electrons can provide direct observational evidence for such a model and place strong constraints on the complex nonlinear plasma processes in DSA theory. In this study we calculate the energy spectra of CR protons and electrons in Type Ia SNRs, using time-dependent DSA simulations that incorporate phenomenological models for some wave-particle interactions. We demonstrate that the time-dependent evolution of the self-amplified magnetic fields, Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift, and escape of the highest energy particles affect the energy spectra of accelerated protons and electrons, and so resulting nonthermal radiation spectrum. Especially, the spectral cutoffs in X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray emission spectra are regulated by the evolution of the highest energy particles, which are injected at the early phase of SNRs. Thus detailed understandings of nonlinear wave-particle interactions and time-dependent DSA simulations of SNRs are crucial in testing the SNR hypothesis for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of female nurses who are working with the male nurse as a colleague in the clinical settings. Methods: Eleven female nurses who were working with a male nurse over six months were interviewed, and the data were analyzed by using the Giorgi's phenomenological method. Results: Six main meanings and nineteen themes emerged through this study. The six main meanings were as follows; prejudice against male nurses' roles, difficulties in establishing collaboration and trust as a peer, deficit of intimacy due to inappropriate attitude, weakening stereotypes ideas about male nurses, permissive mind of gender difference and individuality, expectations to the male nurses' contributions to nursing profession. Conclusion: These results could be utilized in the development of effective strategies to improve the male nurses' adaptation to the nursing clinical settings.

Method: Participants in this study were 9 cancer patients with ages ranging from 31 to 70 years old, living in B city, who experienced cancer operations. Data collection consisted of in-depth interviews and an observation method done from October to December in 2003. In analysing data, Colaizzi's(1978) phenomenological research method was adopted. Results: Five categories emerged from ten theme clusters. The five categories were: 'shock', 'expectations & wishes', 'despair', 'feelings of burden', 'continual pain'. Conclusion: The results of this study showthat oncology nurses need to pay more attention to the psychosocial aspect of nursing to empathize and support the cancer patients who suffer and its treatment, and operations.

  • Critical regionalism has been consistently influential in architecture since the 1980s. While acknowledging its contribution to the discipline of architecture, this article inquires into two co-related issues in critical regionalism as elaborated upon by Kenneth Frampton: critical subjectivity and identity. Regarding critical subjectivity, critical regionalism demands one to stand critical of both tradition and technological development. It assumes that one can locate herself in a neutral zone unshackled from both conditions so that she can make an unbiased judgment. This article criticizes this form of subjectivity by illuminating the situated nature of the subject in the continuity of tradition within which one always stands. The second issue is identity. Keeping the identity of a region through architecture is accepted as a rule in critical regionalism. However, how we shall understand the identity is unclear. This article introduces a notion of identity as rooted in the dialectics of opposites, and demonstrates it by referring to Le Corbusier's architecture and Tetsuro Watsuji's philosophy of climate. The objective of this series of inquiries is not to shake the validity of critical regionalism, but to renew and extend its significance for contemporary architecture.

  • Ferroelectric properties are governed by domain structures and domain wall motions, so it is of significance to understand domain evolution processes under mechanical stress. In the present study, in situ piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) observation under compressive stress was carried out for a near-morphotropic PZT. Both $180^{\circ}$ and $non-180^{\circ}$ domain structures were observed from PFM images, and their habit planes were identified using electron backscatter diffraction in conjunction with PFM data. By externally applied mechanical stress, needle-like $non-180^{\circ}$ domain patterns were broadened via domain wall motions. This was interpreted via phenomenological approach such that the total energy minimization can be achieved by domain wall motion rather than domain nucleation mainly due to the local gradient energy. Meanwhile, no motion was observed from curvy $180^{\circ}$ domain walls under the mechanical stress, validating that $180^{\circ}$ domain walls are not directly influenced by mechanical stress.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the meaning and essence of a mother's experience of hospitalization of her newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design. An interview was conducted with a mother whose newborn was hospitalized in the NICU, and the data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method. Results: Five main themes and 19 formulated meanings were indentified. The 5 themes were 'drowning in pain', 'just look outside the glass door', 'being a pillar', 'a deepening attachment', and 'prepare for nurturing with hope'. Conclusion: The results of this study provided an in-depth understanding of the experience of a mother with a newborn in the NICU. These results can be used in the development of a nursing intervention program that provides psychological and emotional support to the mother and family.

  • The purpose of this research is to describe the experiences of friendship in male nursing students. This study was based on the phenomenological method described by Colaizzi(1978). To collect qualitative data, 21 personal interviews were conducted from June to August 2014. Four theme clusters emerged from the data as follows: They experienced as a small fringe group; Female students' world they hardly understood; They conflicted with the different female world; They endeavored to company with female students. The results of this study could guide nursing faculties to understand male nursing students' experience as different from female ones, and to support them to realize their full potential to develop into good nurses.

  • A simultaneous visualization of the behavior of bubbles and dry spots has been carried out for pool boiling of R-1l3 on a horizontal heater. From video imaging and image processing analysis, the formation of bubbles and dry spots occurs simultaneously, and therefore they should be considered as a synchronized concept rather than independent identities. The dry spot density is equivalent to the active site density in the region before CHF. At CHF point, large dry areas due to the coalescence of neighboring dry areas cover the heater surface.
